Roxanne in the anime

Roxanne first appeared in Gonna Rule The School. Ash Ketchum and his friends met her when Max found a lost Poliwag from Roxanne's school. Roxanne teaches classes on Pokémon to the citizens of Rustboro. She is in charge of teaching very young children about Pokémon in the Pokémon Trainer's School.

When Ash and company first arrived in Rustboro, Roxanne was not able to answer Ash's challenge because she was still busy with teaching. However, she and the headmaster of the school invited the gang to spend a day in the school.

In A Winner By a Nosepass, Ash battled Roxanne at the Gym while being filmed by some of Roxanne's students. Ash's Pikachu was able to defeat both of her Pokémon through a combination of pure electrical power and its newly learned Iron Tail technique, which took Roxanne by surprise.

Roxanne apparently knows Professor Oak, as he gives live remote lectures for the students at the school. She also knows about Brock and the Pewter Gym, which shares her specialty.

Geodude was first seen in Gonna Rule The School, when Roxanne used it to fight off Team Rocket. In the next episode, Geodude was the first Pokémon Roxanne used in her Gym battle with Ash. Geodude easily defeated Treecko with two Mega Punch attacks despite the type disadvantage and Ash's best efforts, since Treecko didn't know any Grass-type moves at the time. Pikachu, however, managed to defeat Geodude with Thunder*.

Geodude's known moves are Mega Punch, Rock Throw, and Rollout.

Nosepass

The next Pokémon Roxanne used in her battle with Ash was her signature Pokémon, Nosepass. Since Pikachu had not much experience in using the move Iron Tail as it had only recently learned it, it was not able to use it effectively against Nosepass. It proved to be a tough opponent for Pikachu. However, eventually Pikachu managed to perfect its Iron Tail, and was able to defeat Nosepass with it, earning Ash the Stone Badge.

Nosepass's known moves are Zap Cannon*, Sandstorm, Thunder Wave*, and Rock Tomb.

Roxanne and her Nosepass in Pokémon Adventures

Roxanne is an honor student at the Pokémon Trainers School of Rustboro and knows much trivia about Pokémon. She's also extremely arrogant about her intellect.

Roxanne travels around by riding on her Graveler. She keeps her Nosepass's Poké Ball in a hollowed-out book.

In Pokémon Adventures, Sapphire arrived in Rustboro eager to win her first Badge. She entered the Rustboro Gym only to see a classroom full of students listening to a lecture from Roxanne.

Roxanne makes her opponents take a written test as part of the Gym challenge. Due to Sapphire's harshness and lack of experience in classroom Roxanne acted very arrogant toward her, but when she discovered Sapphire got the highest marks in the history of the test due to her tutoring from her father, Professor Birch, she battled her out of annoyance.

Sapphire battled with her Aron only to have Roxanne's Nosepass block her attacks with Harden. Sapphire was unable to withdraw her Aron from the battle thanks to Nosepass' Magnet Pull. Sapphire, however, realized that Nosepass must always face north and had her Aron attack from behind.

In the Hoenn conflict, she sided with Team Aqua. She had worked with Professor Cozmo, who unknowingly assisted the evil team, and reasoned that the Professor wouldn't support an evil group. She changed her mind after Kyogre and Groudon started their rampage.

Roxanne attempted to stop Groudon in Lilycove City by having her Nosepass use Block. It worked, but during a battle with Courtney, the FireHead threatened to kill nearby civilians and so Roxanne yielded, allowing Courtney's Ninetales to knock out Nosepass.

Nosepass
Roxanne's Nosepass

Nosepass was used to battle Sapphire's Rono. Sapphire tried to recall her Rono to switch to her Toro but Nosepass's Ability disallowed it. With no other ideas in mind, Sapphire had no choice but to keep Rono out. Even though Nosepass had a disadvantage against Steel types, it narrowly defeated Rono with its powerful moves and strategies. However, it was defeated when Rono finally turned the tables.

Later, Nosepass was used to try to stop Groudon with its Block attack but Groudon was able to penetrate the attack as Magma Admin Courtney's Ninetales was able to knock it out by forcing Roxanne to surrender.

Nosepass's known moves are Harden, Rock Throw, Rock Slide, and Block, and its Ability is Magnet Pull. Nosepass also has an Adamant nature.

Graveler
Roxanne's Graveler
Debut VS. Shiftry

Roxanne used her Graveler to take her to the Gym Leader's meeting in Hoenn. Not much else is known about it.

Graveler's only known move is Rock Blast.

Cradily
Roxanne's Cradily

Cradily was used to battle Courtney's Ninetales. Although Ninetales gained the upper hand, Cradily did not give up easily and kept going.

Cradily's known moves are Ingrain and Constrict, and its Ability is Insomnia*.

In the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga

Roxanne in the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga

Roxanne appears in the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga in the chapter Clefairy's Training Camp!!. She was first seen carrying groceries to her gym and invites Red and his Pokémon along. Her Gym was also a Pokémon School. Roxanne showed them inside where her Nosepass resides, reading a book. Roxanne wants her Nosepass to study hard in order to get a good job elsewhere. However, she had trouble as Nosepass wanted something different. Red and his Pokémon help her out. In gratitude, Roxanne wanted to give them the Stone Badge but they decide to give her a donut instead. After much sightseeing with Nosepass, they managed to have Nosepass work as a picnic table. Roxanne became pleased with the decision.

Trivia

  • Roxanne was the first Gym Leader that is encountered first in the region to give out a TM containing a move of her signature type; both Falkner and Brock gave out TMs containing moves not of their specialty type in their respective first appearances, changing to their specialty in their games' remakes.
  • Roxanne is the only Rock-type specialist Gym Leader who is female.
  • Roxanne is also the first Rock-type Gym Leader that doesn't have an Onix when she is challenged the first time, as Onix is not native to Hoenn.
    • By the final rematch in Pokémon Emerald, the Onix she obtains earlier has evolved into Steelix, becoming the only Pokémon in her team that is not of her specialty type.
  • Roxanne uses all five Pokémon families from the Kanto and Hoenn regions which can be revived from Fossils.
  • In her first battles, all of Roxanne's Pokémon are female. In all subsequent rematches in Emerald, they are all male.
