Marshadow (Japanese: マーシャドー Marshadow) is a major character in the movie, I Choose You!. Marshadow is said to be a guide from the shadows who leads those chosen by Ho-Oh to be the Rainbow Hero. If the Rainbow Wing given to the chosen person loses its color, Marshadow is tasked with sealing the Rainbow Wing away.
History
Marshadow is first emerging from the shadow an Entei at watches Ash, Verity, and Sorrel rest in a cave to avoid a rainstorm.
After his defeat at the hands of Cross, Ash angrily lashes out at his friends and runs off to a forest to sulk. His frustration causes the Rainbow Wing to lose its color. Marshadow appears and uses its powers to put Ash to sleep, trapping him in a dream world where Pokémon do not exist and he goes to school instead of traveling. Though Ash does not remember what Pokémon are in this world, his bond with Pikachu allows him to regain his memories and wake up. Startled by the experience, Ash apologizes to Pikachu for his earlier behavior, causing the Rainbow Wing to revert back to its normal state.
After meeting back up with his friends, Ash tells Verity and Sorrel about the strange dream. When Ash wonders what caused the dream to happen, Marshadow emerges from its shadow only to quickly hide back inside when spotted by Pikachu. Pikachu, attempting to get Marshadow to reveal itself, attacks the tree Ash was sitting only. The attempt only causes a group of wild Primeape to appear and attack the group in anger.
Upon arriving at the Raizen Mountains, Ash and his friends travel to Mount Tensei to meet with Ho-Oh. Shortly after arriving, the group is attacked by Cross, who challenges Ash to a battle for the Rainbow Wing. At this point, Marshadow fully reveals itself to everyone in order to observe the battle. When the battled ended in Ash's victory, Cross steals the Rainbow Wing and tries to summon Ho-Oh himself. Due to the wickedness in his heart, the Rainbow Wing immediately loses its color, causing the skies to turn black once Cross puts the wing on Rainbow Rock.
Angered by this, Marshadow attacks Cross and tries to seal the Rainbow Wing away, only to become corrupted by the evil tainting it. Cross tries to take the Rainbow Wing back by force, but Marshadow uses its powers to take control of Cross's Midnight Form Lycanroc and has it attack its Trainer. Marshadow then takes control of the other Pokémon living in the area and uses them to form a small army to attack everyone.
As the others battle the Marshadow's army, Ash confronts Marshadow itself in an attempt to take back the Rainbow Wing and cleanse it of the evil tainting it. Ash and Pikachu battle Marshadow, but it proves to be too powerful and defeats them, though it is left exhausted afterward. Marshadow's army then proceeds to fire a simultaneous attack on Ash and Pikachu. Ash sacrifices himself by forcing Pikachu to return to its Poké Ball in order to take the full force of the attack alone. The attack causes Ash's body to disappear, and the Rainbow Wing vanishes soon after. Pikachu, in tears from Ash's sacrifice, releases an extremely powerful blast of electricity, sending Marshadow and its army flying. The attack turns the sky back to normal and releases Marshadow and its army from the Rainbow Wing's corruption.
After Ash's body is restored, he receives a new Rainbow Wing. With the Rainbow Rock back to normal, Marshadow then proceeds to leave. After Ash finishes his battle with Ho-Oh, Marshadow watches Bonji make a speech about potential future Rainbow Heroes.
