Ash Ketchum (Japanese: サトシ Satoshi) is a Trainer from Pallet Town whose goal is to become a Pokémon Master. He is the main protagonist of I Choose You!, a Pokémon movie that is set in a different continuity from the main anime. Despite having largely the same personality as the Ash of the main anime and starting out his journey in a similar way, the rest of Ash’s story developed in quite a different way.

History

Ash putting on his cap for the first time

Before starting his journey, Ash watched the final round of a Pokémon League on tv between Corey and Neesha. He accidentally broke his alarm clock, causing him to sleep late and miss his chance to get a Pokémon from Professor Oak. Arriving at Professor Oak's Laboratory, Professor Oak informed him that the three Starter Pokémon had already been taken by other Trainers from Pallet Town. There was a fourth Pokémon however, a stubborn Pikachu. Ash decided to choose Pikachu and after receiving new clothes from his mother, he left Pallet Town and started his journey.

Shortly after leaving, Ash tried to catch his very first Pokémon. After failing to catch a Pidgey, partially due to Pikachu refusing to listen, he accidentally angered a wild Spearow. The Spearow called for its herd and started chasing Ash and Pikachu. Pikachu got heavily injured during the chase, with Ash trying to protect him from the Spearow at all cost. He told PIkachu to go inside his Poké Ball while he tried to singlehandedly hold back the Spearow, but Pikachu chose to defend Ash instead and scared the Spearow off with his Thunderbolt attack.

Ho-Oh

After the Spearow had gone, Ash and Pikachu bonded with each other, when suddenly a Ho-Oh appeared in the sky. They looked in awe at the sight of this unknown Pokémon, as Ho-Oh dropped a Rainbow Wing. Ash picked it up and saw a rainbow appear in the sky. Smiling, he promised Pikachu that they would both meet Ho-Oh again someday.

Continuing his journey, Ash ventured inside Viridian Forest, where he eventually encountered a Caterpie. With the help of Pikachu, he managed to catch Caterpie. He also decided to qualify for the Pokémon League and managed to win two Badges, winning his third one when he defeated Erika at the Celadon Gym.

Ash and Pikachu on their journey

While staying at a Pokémon Center in a forest, Ash heard from another Trainer that he had just battled an Entei nearby. Deciding to chase after Entei himself, Ash met another Trainer named Verity in the process, who was also trying to catch Entei. Soon, a third Trainer named Sorrel joined in. Entei blocked all of their attacks and ran off, causing Ash and Verity to argue and Ash challenging Verity to a battle. Verity accepted and also challenged Sorrel, but he declined and continued on his journey.

When Ash and Verity battled, they accidentally awoke an Onix and subsequently ran away. After running for a while, Ash managed to calm down the Onix and it left them alone. Next, it started to rain and Ash and Verity ran away again, now looking for shelter. While doing so, they encountered a lonely Charmander on a rock. Deciding to help the Charmander, its original Trainer Cross suddenly showed up, who revealed that he had abandoned Charmander and told it to stay away from him. Ash argued with Cross over this, but he refused to listen and walked away. Ash and Verity then decided to save Charmander and brought it to a nearby cave.

Coincidentally, Sorrel was also staying at this cave to hide from the rain. Sorrel healed Charmander, after which Ash held it in his arms. While warming up near a fire, Ash bonded with Verity and Sorrel and they told each other their dreams and ambitions. Ash showed his new friends his Rainbow Wing, to which Sorrel told him about the legend of the “rainbow hero”, who would look for Ho-Oh under the guidance of the wing.

The next day, Charmander had fully recovered and Ash offered it the chance to join him on his journey. Charmander accepted, despite still feeling loyalty for Cross. Continuing their journey together, the three Trainers saw a rainbow appear in the sky and Ash’s Rainbow Wing started to glow. Looking at his map, Sorrel found out the rainbow appeared near the Raizen Mountains. Brimming with excitement, the group decided to travel to the Raizen Mountains to find Ho-Oh.

Sometime after, Ash tried to catch a Pinsir but failed to do so, although his Caterpie evolved into Metapod in the process. The group traveled for days, and when they came across a town, where Ash battled a Trainer with a Jigglypuff. Using his Charmander, he managed to defeat the Trainer, causing Charmander to evolve into Charmeleon. After defeating another Trainer in battle with Pikachu, Cross showed up and challenged Ash to a battle. Ash used his Charmeleon against Cross’s Incineroar but proved no match and was easily defeated.

Taking the loss hard, Ash started to question himself and his Pokémon, especially after Cross called him the worst Trainer he had ever seen. Ash faulted Charmeleon for the loss, and even started to wish he had started his journey with a Squirtle or Bulbasaur instead of Pikachu. Duet o his change of heart and personality, the Rainbow Wing turned dark. Unbeknownst to him, Ash had been followed and watched by a Marshadow for some time. Marshadow decided to help Ash and help him bond with Pikachu again by pulling him into a dream.

Marshadow following Ash

In his dream, Ash found himself in a world without Pokémon, in which he went to school with Verity and Sorrel instead of going on a journey. Ash vowed to Verity and Sorrel that he would go on a journey with his best buddy Pikachu, to which his friends asked what buddy he meant. Ash soon realized Pikachu was not with him in this world and started to cry. Fortunately, Ash heard Pikachu calling for him and vaguely saw him in front of him. Ash chased Pikachu around, causing the dream world to crumble and fall apart. Nevertheless, Ash managed to get hold of Pikachu, which made him wake up from the dream. Reuniting with Verity and Sorrel, Ash realized his mistakes and apologized to Pikachu and Charmeleon, with the Rainbow Wing regaining its color.

Soon after, Marshadow appeared again from the shadows. Pikachu noticed it and tried to attack it, but Marshadow retreated and the attack instead woke up a group of angry Primeape. Ash used his Metapod to subdue the Primeape with String Shot and Metapod subsequently evolved into Butterfree. Resuming their journey to the Raizen Mountains, Ash, Verity and Sorrel encountered a rare pink Butterfree. Ash’s own Butterfree saved her from a Fearow and bonded with her. The two Butterfree would briefly part ways, but some time after the group encountered the pink Butterfree’s herd near the Raizen Mountains and Ash’s Butterfree reunited with it. Seeing how happy the two Butterfree were together, Ash made a hard decision and said a tearful goodbye to his trusted friend.

Finally reaching the Raizen Mountains and its highest peak Mt. Tensei, the group met Bonji, a researcher who had been searching for Ho-Oh for 20 years. Ash’s Rainbow Wing connected with Rainbow Rock, a rock on Mt. Tensei, with Bonji explaining this was the sign that Ho-Oh would appear soon. As Ash proceeded to place the Rainbow Wing on Rainbow Rock, he was stopped by Cross and his Incineroar. Cross had been spying on the group for some time and had learned of their quest to find Ho-Oh. Cross wanted to battle Ho-Oh himself and tried to steal the Rainbow Wing from Ash.

The Rainbow Wing

He challenged Ash to a battle, when suddenly the Marshadow from earlier appeared from the shadows to spectate the match. Ash used his Charmeleon against Cross’s Incineroar and in the heat of the battle Charmeleon evolved into Charizard. With newfound power, Charizard managed to defeat Incineroar. After his victory, Ash proceeded towards Rainbow Rock and explained his vision on battles and Pokémon to a distraught Cross. Not accepting his loss, Cross pushed Ash aside and took his Rainbow Wing. Cross placed the Rainbow Wing atop Rainbow Rock to summon Ho-Oh, but due to his evil heart the wing became corrupted and the skies turned black.

Marshadow, angered by this turn of events, swept Cross aside and picked up the Rainbow Wing. It corrupted the Gloomdweller Pokémon however, and it gained the power to control other Pokémon. Marshadow used this new power to turn Cross’s Lycanroc and nearby wild Pokémon against the humans. Bonji explained to Ash that he was the only one who could get the Rainbow Wing back from Marshadow. As such, Ash made his way towards Marshadow, receiving assistance from Verity, Sorrel, their Pokémon, and even Cross who stopped his Lycanroc from attacking Ash.

Ash battled Marshadow with Pikachu, but the Mouse Pokémon proved no match for Marshadow and was heavily injured. Ash tried to protect Pikachu from the Pokémon possessed by Marshadow and asked Pikachu to go into his Poké Ball, mirrorring their encounter with the flock of Spearow at the start of their journey. Ash stood in front of Pikachu when the Pokémon fired their attacks towards him, and even though Pikachu tried to protect Ash once more he was too weakened and failed to do so.

Taking the full blast, Ash and Pikachu were swept aside. Ash asked Pikachu why he did not go into his Poké Ball, to which Pikachu answered in human language that he always wanted to be with Ash, no matter what. The possessed Pokémon fired another round of attacks, and this time Ash managed to recall Pikachu and shielded the Poké Ball, taking the full blast on his own. Ash’s body slowly disappeared and all but his consciousness vanished. As a result of this, the corrupted Rainbow Wing withered and freed Marshadow and the other Pokémon of its control. Pikachu then took hold of Ash’s hat and cried over the loss of his Trainer and best friend.

Ash’s consciousness woke up in a spirit world where he was all alone. Despite this, he could hear Pikachu crying over him. He ran towards Pikachu’s voice and his body started to regenerate in the real world. Pikachu ran towards him and reunited with Ash, fully reviving Ash. Soon after, a new Rainbow Wing appeared before Ash while Marshadow retreated back into the shadows. Ash placed the Rainbow Wing atop Rainbow Rock and this time it recognized the Trainer’s pure heart. A rainbow appeared, followed by Ho-Oh flying over Mt. Tensei.

Ho-Oh blessed the mountain with a green light, and afterwards Ash challenged Ho-Oh to a battle using Pikachu. Ho-Oh and Pikachu had a fierce battle that lasted until the sun had set, after which they stopped their battle and Ho-Oh departed. After healing at a Pokémon Center, Ash, Verity and Sorrel said their goodbyes to Cross, who had changed his ways and promised to battle against Ash again someday. Sometime after, Ash also split ways with Verity and Sorrel, who both went to pursue their own goals. Ash continued his journey with Pikachu, vowing to once become a Pokémon Master.
