Power of the Bond (Japanese: 絆の力 Power of the Bond) is the ninth chapter of the Pokémon Horizon manga.

Synopsis

Tokio wants all three of them to attack Meja at once. He commands his Type: Null to use X-Scissor, Mana calls for her Decidueye to use Steel Wing, and Akira calls for his Lycanroc to use Stone Edge.

Tokio emphasises that they cannot hold anything back, that they must use full power against his father. Meja laughs that he can take on all of them. He orders his Primarina to use Reflect, Decidueye to use Double Team, and Incineroar to use Bulk Up. These defensive attacks block all of the group's attacks.

Akira is surprised that Meja can control all three of his Pokémon at once. Meja says a King must be prepared to be outnumbered, and everyone would soon be bowing before him.

He reveals to the group an image of a dome on a large screen. It is a powerful weapon called a Solray, a plasma weapon capable of striking anywhere in the world. But the weapon requires Solgaleo's infinite energy in order to use it. When he acquires this, Meja would use it to become King of the World. Mana and Akira are both shocked and afraid at Meja's plan, with Tokio agreeing that his father's plan is madness.

Meja calls Incineroar forward, saying he will take the red stone from Lycanroc, which he will use it to capture Solgaleo and so fulfil his ambition. Lycanroc blocks Incineroar's punch, and Akira says it won't be that easy. Primarina then uses Hydro Pump on Type: Null, which hits Tokio's Pokémon. Meja taunts Tokio, but Tokio responds by saying he was waiting for the Reflect from earlier to wear off, and that he will defeat his father with everything he's got. He calls for his weakened Type: Null to use the Z-Move Breakneck Blitz, which faints Primarina.

Meja brushes it off, and turns his attention to his Decidueye battling with Mana's Decidueye, saying that Mana's Pokémon looks weak. Mana screams as Meja's Pokémon swoops in for a final strike, but Type: Null jumps in between them, and blocks the attack with an Air Slash. Meja is surprised that Type: Null still has enough strength left, as Tokio throws Mana an item while his father is distracted.

Meja laughs once again, as Type: Null is seemingly drained of energy. He commands his Decidueye to finish off both Type: Null and Mana's Decidueye with Leaf Blade. Mana is defiant, insisting that Decidueye may be weak but fights as hard as it can. She then uses the Z-Move Sinister Arrow Raid with her Pokémon, defeating Meja's Decidueye, much to his disbelief.

Mana thanks Tokio for throwing her a Decidium Z so that she could use the Z-Move with her Pokémon, and realises that the group has now defeated two of Meja's three Pokémon. As there is only Incineroar left to defeat, she declares confidently that Team Kings should give up.

Meja is undeterred, saying that although he is losing the battle so far, the group has used up all their power with that Z-Move; Lycanroc cannot use its Z-Move on Incineroar and so is at a huge disadvantage.

Incineroar strikes Lycanroc hard, leaving it on its knees. Mana shouts for Lycanroc, and cannot understand why it is having a hard time battling. Akira looks tense, and Meja interjects, saying some of its attacks have failed, and that Lycanroc has a weakness. Tokio says that Lycanroc can't use the Z-Move in battle, which is reluctantly acknowledged by Akira.

Tokio explains that Lycanroc can get over-excited in battle and doesn't obey Akira's commands, weakening the bond between them, so the Z-Move cannot be used. Meja laughs that Lycanroc doesn’t trust Akira, and that he would dare take on Team Kings without being able to use the Z-Move with his Pokémon. Mana defends Akira, saying he is a fine trainer, but Akira admits that maybe Lycanroc doesn't need him. Mana shouts support to Akira, and Akira says he believes in Lycanroc, and that they can still win without the Z-Move.

Akira confidently commands the recovered Lycanroc to use Reversal, saying the more cornered Lycanroc gets, the stronger it gets. Lycanroc strikes Incineroar, but it withstands the attack, to which Meja explains that Incineroars's defense is high after it used Bulk Up earlier.

Incineroar counters the attack a powerful Flare Blitz, defeating Lycanroc. As Lycanroc falls, it devolves back into Rockruff, and lands heavily on the ground. Incineroar grabs the fallen Rockruff, and Akira runs in to defend his Pokémon but receives a sharp blow from Incineroar, knocking him onto his back.

Rockruff can barely open its eyes as it, along with the red stone around its neck, is tossed into the receptor machine by Incineroar, with Akira and Mana watching on helplessly. A jubilant Meja declares that with this victory nothing can stand in his way of becoming King.

The machine beings to work, opening the Ultra Wormhole connecting Solgeleo's dimension to theirs. Meja calls for Solgaleo to appear before him, and the head of a Pokémon begins to appear, but it is not Solgaleo. Meja is taken aback, and Tokio grins at his father's confusion.
