The Play Lab demo decks are three Pokémon Trading Card Game Half Decks created for use and distribution at Play Lab events hosted by The Pokémon Company International.
Information
Play Lab was designed to teach beginners and casual players the fundamentals of the Pokémon TCG. Play Labs are typically dedicated areas present at conventions and TCG Premier Events and offer three modular experiences at no cost to event attendees:
Poké Catch: The Poké Catch module is an entry-level teaching tool designed to introduce young players to Pokémon and Energy types.
- Duration: 5-10 minutes
- Play Level: Basic – recommended for young players and those new to the TCG
Attack & Attach: This module requires a basic knowledge of TCG mechanics as it introduces Basic and Evolution Pokémon, turn order, and cards in the hand.
- Duration: 10-15 minutes
- Play Level: Stage 1 – recommended for players still learning the basics of the TCG and those wishing to play for longer periods of time
30-Card Demo Deck Battle: This module showcases a simplified TCG experience utilizing one of the Umbreon V, Lucario V, or Greninja V demo decks. This three-Prize card game also introduces Abilities, power cards like Pokémon V, and more complex game actions such as "searching the deck."
- Duration: 20-30 minutes
- Play Level: Stage 2 – recommended for players familiar with most TCG mechanics and those able to play through battles with minimal guidance
Play Lab participants can select which demo deck to use for the 30-Card Demo Deck Battle module, which are distributed sealed in plastic wrapping. Following the conclusion of the experience, participants are given a damage counter sheet and an appropriate deck box featuring Umbreon, Lucario, or Greninja to keep their cards in and take with them. The cards featured in the demo decks are reprints sourced from the first two years of the Sword & Shield Series but feature several exclusive prints:
Umbreon V demo deck:
- Non Holofoil print (×1) of Evolving Skies Umbreon V
- Print (×2) of SWSH Black Star Promo Galarian Obstagoon without the Battle Academy 2022 Eevee Deck symbol
Lucario V demo deck:
- Non Holofoil print (×1) of Champion's Path Lucario V
- Non Holofoil print (×2) of Champion's Path Machamp
Greninja V demo deck:
- Non Holofoil print (×1) of Fusion Strike Greninja V
The first Play Lab was known as Discover Lab and was present at Pokémon GO Fest 2022: Seattle at Seattle Center Park, Washington between July 22 and 24, 2022.[1][2][3] It was then present as a Learn to Play event at Gen Con 2022, which was held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana between August 4 and 7, 2022.[4][5][6] The first Play Lab to be branded as such was present at the 2022 World Championships, held at ExCeL London in London, United Kingdom between August 18 and 21, 2022.[7] This was the first Play Lab to give out Research Folders and sticker sheets to participants, as well as the first to demonstrate the Raid Battle Format in-person since its 2020 announcement. Promotional Parallel Holofoil variants of Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble bearing a Play! Pokémon stamp were also available as prizes.
Other events in 2022 hosting the Play Lab included PAX West 2022,[8] held at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington between September 2 and 5, 2022 and PAX Unplugged 2022, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania between December 2 and 4, 2022.[9][10][11][12] The PAX events were also the first to give away Pinny Arcade Pokémon pins to participants. Following the PAX events, Play Labs began to appear at more conventions and premier TCG tournaments, as well as at conventions in regions outside North America.
