Ribbon

A ribbon is a special item first introduced in Generation III which can be awarded to a Pokémon for a variety of reasons. Ribbons stay on a Pokémon even when traded, and can be checked in different ways depending on the game version. Ribbons are generally used purely for aesthetics—to show a Pokémon's accomplishments, that they have participated in special events, etc. Some ribbons, however, actually serve a functional purpose within the games. Each ribbon can be obtained by a given Pokémon only once.

Contest Ribbons

In Generation III, Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire introduced Pokémon contests. For each of the five categories (Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, and Tough) and each of their respective ranks, the winning Pokémon is awarded a ribbon. In both Generations III and IV the categories are the same, though some ranks differ.

Cool Contest

Beauty Contest

Cute Contest

Smart Contest

Tough Contest

Pokémon League Champion

Upon defeating the Elite Four and champion of a region, all Pokémon on the challenger's team are awarded a ribbon signifying their role in entering the Hall of Fame and helping their trainer become the new champ.

Effort Ribbon

The Effort Ribbon is awarded to a Pokémon whose effort training has been completed. In Hoenn, a woman in Slateport City will give out Effort Ribbons to a trainer based on the lead-off member of his/her party. In Sinnoh, a woman in the Sunyshore Market will do the same.

GameBoy Advance exclusive ribbons

There are some ribbons obtainable only in the 3rd generation GameBoy games. In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, ribbons can be viewed through the PokéNav utility. There is no way of viewing them in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen where they are scarce.

Battle Tower ribbons

There are two ribbons for the Battle Tower found in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. The first is awarded for clearing the Lv50 Battle Tower, the second for the Lv100 Battle Tower in Ruby and Sapphire, or Open Level Battle Tower in Emerald.

  • Winning Ribbon
  • Victory Ribbon

Super Sketch Model

  • Artist Ribbon

GameCube exclusive ribbons

There are a few ribbons obtainable only from the GameCube Pokémon games. In Pokémon Colosseum and XD, the fourth page of the Pokémon Summary screen is dedicated to showcasing awarded ribbons.

Purification ribbon

A ribbon is "awarded for clearing all difficulties" when a Shadow Pokémon has been purified.

Mt. Battle ribbon

A "100-straight Win Commemorative" ribbon is awarded upon completion of Mt. Battle from beginning to end.

DS exclusive ribbons

With the 4th generation a new batch of exclusive ribbons can be acquired. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl ribbons can be viewed on the seventh and last page of the Pokémon Summary screen (represented with a pink ribbon button).

Julia - The Ribbon Lady

Each day of the week, a woman named Julia living in the far northeastern house in Sunyshore City will give players a ribbon when she is told a story. The ribbon corresponds to her mood and the story told on that day and will be given to whichever Pokémon is in the first party slot.

  • Alert Ribbon - Monday
  • Shock Ribbon - Tuesday
  • Downcast Ribbon - Wednesday
  • Careless Ribbon - Thursday
  • Relax Ribbon - Friday
  • Snooze Ribbon - Saturday
  • Smile Ribbon - Sunday

Footprint Ribbon

If a Pokémon is happy with its trainer, Dr. Footprint on the western end of Route 213 will give it the Footprint Ribbon.

Resort Area

If a Pokémon has at least ten ribbons, its trainer can get into the Ribbon Syndicate. Here more ribbons can be purchased for the Pokémon. These ribbons are mainly a show of status as opposed to one of accomplishments.
