Ribbon
A ribbon is a special item first introduced in Generation III which can be awarded to a Pokémon for a variety of reasons. Ribbons stay on a Pokémon even when traded, and can be checked in different ways depending on the game version. Ribbons are generally used purely for aesthetics—to show a Pokémon's accomplishments, that they have participated in special events, etc. Some ribbons, however, actually serve a functional purpose within the games. Each ribbon can be obtained by a given Pokémon only once.
Contest Ribbons
In Generation III, Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire introduced Pokémon contests. For each of the five categories (Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, and Tough) and each of their respective ranks, the winning Pokémon is awarded a ribbon. In both Generations III and IV the categories are the same, though some ranks differ.
