Crasher Wake uses Water Pokémon in his battles. For defeating him, Trainers receive the Fen, 55, and are able to use Defog/Surf outside of battle. In addition, in , if he is the fourth Gym Leader defeated, all Pokémon up to level 50 will obey their Trainer. Crasher Wake has a jovial, enthusiastic, and bombastic personality. Crasher Wake's strategy is nothing more than choosing moves that will make his battles more fun, and encourages everyone to not take battles too seriously, and to remember they're supposed to be fun. Crasher Wake uses the prize money he gets from competitive Pokémon battles to help the unfortunate. Crasher Wake has his Pokémon use Defog to keep the weather of Pastoria City clear.

Crasher Wake (Japanese: マキシマム仮面 Maximum Mask), otherwise known simply as Wake (Japanese: マキシ Maxi), is the Gym Leader of Pastoria City's Gym, known officially as the Pastoria Gym. He hands out the Fen Badge to Trainers who defeat him. He specializes in Water Pokémon.

In the games
He later appears in the Battle Zone, talking to the player's rival, Barry. The rival also mentions that Crasher Wake was born overseas. However, he speaks clearly, without any foreign accent. In , Crasher Wake reveals that he was born and raised in the Sinnoh region, even though everyone thinks otherwise.

He later appears in the Battle Zone, talking to the player's rival, Barry. The rival also mentions that Crasher Wake was born overseas. However, he speaks clearly, without any foreign accent. This may mean he is simply from another region, but this has little evidence.
In Platinum, he is first met when players try to enter Veilstone Gym. In Pastoria City, he sings his own theme song, and the Barry wants him to be his mentor (much to his dismay). Crasher Wake also acts when a Galactic Bomb goes off at the Great Marsh. On Stark Mountain, he mentions that he'll be entering a tournament. Crasher Wake can also be battled again, like the other Sinnoh Gym Leaders, at the Battleground. His wrestling matches will occasionally be shown on the TV as part of the Jubilife TV, which he always wins.

In , he appears in the Celadon Department Store to give the player some Sinnoh first partner Pokémon accessories. He can be found again later, on 47.

In , he appears in the Celadon Department Store to give the player some Sinnoh starter accessories. He can be found again later, on 47.
In , he appears on 18 staring out into the ocean. Once the player talks to him, he decides to head to Driftveil City and takes his leave.

Crasher Wake debuted in Cream of the Croagunk Crop!, where he met Ash, Dawn, and Brock in front of his Gym. However, he informed them that he couldn't battle that day because he was going to be one of the judges of the Pastoria Croagunk Festival. He encouraged the group to attend the festival and they rushed to reach the Great Marsh train. Crasher Wake ran off once the train arrived at the next station, leaving Ash and his friends behind, but they were soon reunited at the festival grounds. After the festival, Crasher Wake said that Ash's Pikachu seemed to be a strong Pokémon after the latter defeated TRT, and said he would be happy to battle him the next day.

The theme song:<br>
The following day, Ash had a three-on-three Gym battle against Crasher Wake. Much to Crasher Wake's surprise, Pikachu quickly took his Gyarados out with a midair Volt Tackle. He sent out Quagsire next, while Ash substituted Pikachu for Turtwig to overcome Quagsire's immunity to Electric attacks. Ash quickly recalled Turtwig to avoid a second Mud Bomb and sent out Buizel. Quagsire was soon defeated after its Ice Beam froze Buizel's Aqua Jet into a hardened projectile. Buizel then took on Crasher Wake's final Pokémon, Floatzel, in a match of speed and power. Ash later recalled Buizel after it became Confusion from a Water Pulse attack, so Pikachu was called back out. Pikachu was soon partially frozen by Floatzel's Ice Fang. Buizel then returned to the battlefield after recovering from its confusion, and it knocked Floatzel out with a close-range Water Pulse, earning Ash the Fen.

Afterwards, the Torterra she borrowed from Diamond defeats the second Pokémon with its Giga Drain when Wake concluded Platinum drowned, only to rise back up from the other side and counterattack. Afterwards, he is impressed by Platinum's adaptability and awards her the Fen Badge.

Later, he reappears in Lake Valor to save Rad Rickshaw and Pearl after the Galactic Bomb's explosion dried the lake, and Saturn defeated the latter. He then had his Quagsire and Floatzel to refill the lake using Rain Dance. Soon, after the boy recovers, Wake coaches him to catch a Floatzel much like his own (after noting that he wouldn't give him his), but when he proves unable, instead tells Pearl to try his luck with the weaker Buizel, which he succeeds in. However, having grown intensely distrustful of humans after the incident, it turned out very disobedient, prone to often attack its owner rather than fight for him. Once Pearl managed to catch two more Pokémon, Crasher Wake promised to make him his own theme song.

Later, Wake, along with Candice and Maylene, joins the fight against the Team Galactic Commanders on the Spear Pillar. Wake and Gardenia team up to face Mars, emerging victorious and attempting to fight Cyrus before he can finish his ritual. Due to a rift in space-time, they are forced to use the Sinnoh Underground to get to Cyrus, but they manage to come up right at the exact spot he was in.

All the Gym Leaders attempt to stop Cyrus's plan by breaking one of his Red Chains. Though a difficult struggle, they manage to succeed, but they bring upon Cyrus's wrath in the process and are defeated. After the final battle with Cyrus ends, Wake and the other Gym Leaders were taken to a hospital due to their heavy injuries.

Platinum
While Wake recovered from his injuries, Pearl finally managed to hear a theme song he made for him through a music player.

* Despite the game claiming that he uses Defog for Pastoria City, none of the Pokémon he uses in battle can learn it. Had Ash fought Fantina previous to Maylene, he would have inadvertently gone out of order compared to the D/P line-up, but in order for the Platinum line-up. Ash battled the three shifted Gym Leaders in the order designated by D/P, as Platinum was not released until after Ash fought Crasher Wake, but before Fantina.

* Crasher Wake is the first Sinnoh Gym Leader whom Ash defeated in the first match.
* Crasher Wake is the only Gym Leader who doesn't present himself with his real name, but rather his stage name.

He specializes in Water-type Pokémon.

In the core series games

Crasher Wake uses Water-type Pokémon in his battles. For defeating him, Trainers receive the Fen Badge, TM55 (Brine), and are able to use DefogDPBDSP/SurfPt outside of battle. In addition, in Diamond and Pearl, if he is the fourth Gym Leader defeated, all Pokémon up to level 50 will obey their Trainer.

He later appears in the Battle Zone, talking to the player's rival, Barry. The rival also mentions that Crasher Wake was born overseas. However, he speaks clearly, without any foreign accent. In Black 2 and White 2, Crasher Wake reveals that he was born and raised in the Sinnoh region, even though everyone thinks otherwise.

In Platinum Version, he is first met when players try to enter Veilstone Gym. In Pastoria City, he sings his own theme song, and the rival wants him to be his mentor (much to his dismay). Crasher Wake also acts when a Galactic Bomb goes off at the Great Marsh. On Stark Mountain, he mentions that he'll be entering a tournament. Crasher Wake can also be battled again, like the other Sinnoh Gym Leaders, at the Battleground. His wrestling matches will occasionally be shown on the TV as part of the Pokémon Variety Hour, which he always wins.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, he appears in the Celadon Department Store to give the player some Sinnoh first partner Pokémon accessories. He can be found again later, on Route 47.

In Black 2 and White 2, he appears on Route 18 staring out into the ocean. Once the player talks to him, he decides to head to Driftveil City and takes his leave.

Crasher Wake and his Pokémon in the anime

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

Crasher Wake debuted in Cream of the Croagunk Crop!, where he met Ash, Dawn, and Brock in front of his Gym. However, he informed them that he couldn't battle that day because he was going to be one of the judges of the Pastoria Croagunk Festival. He encouraged the group to attend the festival and they rushed to reach the Great Marsh train. Crasher Wake ran off once the train arrived at the next station, leaving Ash and his friends behind, but they were soon reunited at the festival grounds. After the festival, Crasher Wake said that Ash's Pikachu seemed to be a strong Pokémon after the latter defeated Team Rocket, and said he would be happy to battle him the next day.

The following day, Ash had a three-on-three Gym battle against Crasher Wake. Much to Crasher Wake's surprise, Pikachu quickly took his Gyarados out with a midair Volt Tackle. He sent out Quagsire next, while Ash substituted Pikachu for Turtwig to overcome Quagsire's immunity to Electric-type attacks. Ash later recalled Buizel after it became confused from a Water Pulse attack, so Pikachu was called back out. Pikachu was soon partially frozen by Floatzel's Ice Fang. Buizel then returned to the battlefield after recovering from its confusion, and it knocked Floatzel out with a close-range Water Pulse, earning Ash the Fen Badge.

Crasher Wake reappeared briefly in a flashback in For the Love of Meowth!.

Pokémon movies

Crasher Wake makes a cameo in the ending credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Character

Crasher Wake is a lively person with a booming voice. He has trained his Pokémon to have an increased stamina to take even powerful attacks like Giga Impact without sustaining much damage. Crasher Wake uses his Gym's water-based battlefield as another defense tactic, allowing his Pokémon to remain concealed and ambush the opponent's Pokémon in the process.

Gyarados

Voice actors
Japanese Unshō Ishizuka
English Unshō Ishizuka

Gyarados was the first Pokémon used by Crasher Wake during the Gym battle against Ash; he went up against Pikachu. Gyarados withstood a direct Thunderbolt from Pikachu's, but was defeated when Pikachu combined the speed he picked during his free-fall with a Volt Tackle.

He reappeared briefly in Mamie's flashback in For The Love Of Meowth.

Gyarados's known moves are Dragon Rage and Bite.

Quagsire
Crasher Wake's Quagsire
Debut A Crasher Course in Power!
Voice actors
Japanese
English Billy Beach

Crasher Wake used Quagsire as his second Pokémon during his Gym battle against Ash. It proved itself to be very tricky, able to counteract Turtwig's high speed with its excellent hearing. Quagsire's attacks were perfectly suited to combat its weakness to Grass-types, and Ash was forced to recall it.

Quagsire next went up against Buizel, and although Quagsire was able to absorb Buizel's Sonic Booms with its bulky body, it was knocked out by the sheer force of Ice Aqua Jet.

It reappeared briefly in Mamie's flashback in For The Love Of Meowth.

Quagsire's known moves are Mud Bomb* and Ice Beam.

Floatzel
Crasher Wake's Floatzel
Debut A Crasher Course in Power!
Voice actors
Japanese Katsuyuki Konishi
English Katsuyuki Konishi

Floatzel is Crasher Wake's main Pokémon. He was introduced right after Ash's Buizel got into a fight with Pikachu. Upon seeing his evolved form, Buizel became hyped up for the impending battle and a chance to prove himself to Ash.

Floatzel seems to know many different defensive techniques to guard himself from attacks, such as inflating the flotation sac around his body and blocking with his fin. He also knows a variety of different and powerful moves, adding to his artillery of defense. Crasher Wake claimed that Floatzel is powerful enough to endure even a Giga Impact by using his flotation sac. At one point Floatzel used his flotation sac to reflect Buizel's Water Pulse back at him, confusing him in the process. Later in the battle, Floatzel used Ice Fang to freeze part of Pikachu's back. Despite all this, he lost to Buizel after a Water Pulse that sent Floatzel crashing into the ceiling and getting knocked out.

He reappeared briefly in flashbacks in For The Love Of Meowth and League Unleashed!; as well as making a brief appearance alongside Crasher Wake during the ending credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Floatzel's known moves are Razor Wind, Bulk Up, Whirlpool, and Ice Fang.

History

Past

Crasher Wake trained with Palmer when they were younger, as seen in a flashback in Alternate Dimension Showdown VIII.

Diamond & Pearl arc

Crasher Wake is introduced in A Skuffle with Skorupi. Platinum begins to battle him for the Fen Badge in Crafty Carnivine; their battle concludes in Floatzel and Jetsam, during which Platinum's Empoleon is able to defeat his Floatzel, only to lose to Quagsire.

Platinum arc

While Wake recovered from his injuries, Pearl finally managed to hear a theme song he made for him through a music player.

Gyarados
Crasher Wake's Gyarados

Gyarados was very briefly seen during his presentation, where he was riding on it. It was not used in the Gym match against Platinum.

None of Gyarados's moves are known.

Floatzel
Crasher Wake's Floatzel

Floatzel was the first Pokémon sent against Platinum, going up against her Empoleon in the Gym's pool. Both Pokémon demonstrated great speed, but Floatzel was eventually hit by a Vacuum Wave, sending him flying and defeating him.

He later reappeared with Quagsire in Bogging Down Quagsire, where both used Rain Dance to fill up the dried-up Lake Valor.

Floatzel's known moves are Aqua Jet and Rain Dance, and his Ability is Swift Swim.

Quagsire
Crasher Wake's Quagsire

Quagsire was the second and last Pokémon chosen by Wake to go against Platinum and her Empoleon. Both Pokémon started by using Blizzard, and kept using it until Empoleon collapsed from exhaustion. Quagsire next faced Diamond's Torterra, Tru. After tossing it into the pool, Quagsire prepared to attack Tru as soon as he surfaced. However, Platinum surprised Wake by swimming behind him before surfacing, allowing Tru to defeat Quagsire with Giga Drain, thus making Platinum the winner.

Quagsire later reppeared with Floatzel in Bogging Down Quagsire, where both used Rain Dance to fill up the dried-up Lake Valor.

Quagsire's known moves are Blizzard and Rain Dance, and his Ability is Damp.

He makes a brief cameo in Dialga's Secret Keys, where he is defeated by Hareta. He appears in A Battle Of Wills as Byron comes to, he asks Wake what's going on to find that Hareta is battling Saturn. In The Battle Rages On, Wake is amazed by the size of the wave made by Hareta's Piplup. In Gathering of the Legendary Pokémon, he along with the other Gym Leaders and Sinnoh Elite Four head to the Galactic HQ to take on the remaining Team Galactic grunts.
