Faraway Island (Japanese: さいはてのことう Utmost Island) is an island far from Hoenn. It is the only known habitat of the Mythical Pokémon Mew in the core series games.

Role

The island is only accessible in Pokémon Emerald. Its location is marked on the Old Sea Map and Mr. Briney returns a favor to the player by helping them sail to this island on the ship moored in Lilycove City.

Sign

On the island is a sign with old, fading writing dated the 6th day of a month. In the English localization, this month ends in "ber", suggesting any of the four final months of the year; in the Japanese version, it is only known that it is a month name. In the German, French, and Italian versions, it could indicate the last four months. In the Spanish localization, only September, November, and December could be correct, while October has a different ending. In the Japanese version, there is a remnant of a signature, ジ (ji); this is commonly assumed to be Mr. Fuji.

This island could be the Guyanese jungle referenced in the Pokémon Mansion journals.

Special encounters

Mew is initially hiding in the long grass and needs to be tracked down in order to be encountered. Its tail will occasionally appear out of the grass to mark its location. If the player uses Cut to remove the grass before battling Mew, it will disappear with the message "The feeling of being watched faded...". If this happens, or if the encounter ends due to fleeing or the use of a move to escape (e.g. Roar, Teleport, etc.), leaving and re-entering the forest causes Mew to respawn. If defeated, it will respawn after entering the Hall of Fame.

This Mew is treated as having been met in a fateful encounter. This is not visible in the Generation III games, only becoming visible when transferred to a later generation; in Generation III, this flag is instead used to prevent Mew from disobeying the player and allows it to be traded.

The background music played here is Abandoned Ship, like in Southern Island, another event location accessible in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. When battling Mew, the theme played is Battle! (Mew).

Faraway Island was first mentioned, although not by name, in Leaping Toward the Dream!, where Danika revealed that it was the location of Table Mountain, the largest mountain in the world in terms of surface area and the place where Project Mew would conduct their search for the Mythical Pokémon their research team was named after. Due to the intense storms around the island, their search mission would take place during the brief clear window between the wet and dry seasons.

Faraway Island first appeared in The Mew from Here!, when Danika, Quillon, Horace, Goh, and Gary arrived there in order to begin their search for Mew. While ascending Table Mountain, their electronics suddenly stopped working and the group was split up when their climbing rope was snapped by a Skarmory. Due to their Poké Balls also being disabled, the number of Pokémon the groups could use became limited to their few walking Pokémon. As the two groups traversed through the island's caves and fought off the wild Pokémon in their way in order to reach each other again, they were suddenly confronted by a Groudon and a Kyogre.

In the next episode, the Chasers managed to drive Groudon and Kyogre off and reunite, though it soon turned out that the two Legendary Pokémon had actually been a transformed Mew the entire time. After experiencing a vision of the history of the universe and regaining the ability to use their electronic devices, the Chasers started battling Mew, but were hopelessly outmatched. Mew only stopped attacking them when Goh expressed his gratitude towards it for having inspired him to come this far to meet it again. The Mythical Pokémon then proceeded to heal everyone who had gotten injured in the battle, before teleporting the Chasers at the foot of the mountain, briefly appearing on Goh's palm before the wet season started, ending Project Mew's expedition on the island.

Unlike in the games, Faraway Island is home to other Pokémon species rather than just Mew in the anime, notably housing a population of Fossil Pokémon.

Faraway Island first appeared in Mewtwo and Mew Too, in which Mr. Briney reported to Ultima that he managed to find the island without the Old Sea Map, much to Ultima's astonishment. He also told her that Mew had been there, but it was alarmed by his presence and flew away.

Emerald arc

In The Final Battle VIII, Emerald calmed all the rental Pokémon that had been rampaging at the Battle Frontier due to Guile Hideout's influence by using pellets with soil from the Pokémon's birthplace. Gold explained he was able to affect many different Pokémon using the same soil because it was taken from the home of Mew, who is said to possess the genes of all Pokémon.
