Main series
Hapu debuted in That's Some Spicy Island Research!. She was first seen feeding a group of Sensu Style Oricorio some Poni radishes (大根 daikon) that she had farmed. Later, she encountered Ash and his classmates at her farm. Assuming Ash to be one of the radish thieves that had been stealing her crops lately, Hapu used her Golurk to battle his Pikachu and won. Later, she saw Ash confronting Team Skull Grunts Tupp, Rapp, and Zipp, the actual radish thieves. With her Mudsdale, Hapu easily defeated the grunts, but was interrupted when Plumeria arrived to take her subordinates with her. Afterwards, Hapu apologized to Ash for her earlier accusation but refused his request to battle her.
In Showdown on Poni Island!, after praying at the Ruins of Hope, Hapu watched as Mudsdale stepped on a Corsola branch, which became lodged in its hoof and caused it to go berserk. Ash and Pikachu were able to dislodge the branch with Iron Tail, which calmed Mudsdale down. As they walked, Ash revealed he wanted to challenge Tapu Fini to a battle for his grand trial. Offended by this, Hapu had Mudsdale kick Ash and send him flying. She continued to chase after Ash before being stopped by Lillie. Hapu later refereed the battle between Ash and Gladion. During the battle, she began to reconsider her low opinion of Ash upon learning that he had personally trained with Tapu Bulu to help his Lycanroc overcome its fear of dirt. She then watched as Tapu Fini flew over them.
In Evolving Research!, Hapu accompanied Ash, Kiawe, and Sophocles to Vast Poni Canyon during Sophocles's quest to evolve his Charjabug. There, she watched them battle several of the resident wild Pokémon. In Run, Heroes, Run!, Hapu helped taste-test some of Mallow's Poni radish-based dishes.
In Memories in the Mist!, Hapu had Ash and the others help out at her Poni radish farm. When a mist caused by Tapu Fini filled the area, Ash, Mallow, and Lillie went missing. Worried they would be trapped in the mist forever, Hapu traveled to the Ruins of Hope and confronted Tapu Fini in an attempt to stop it. The spirit of Sofu, her deceased grandfather, appeared, revealing that Tapu Fini has accepted Hapu as the next island kahuna of Poni Island. After meeting back with the others, Hapu revealed she was made the next kahuna and promised to have a grand trial with Ash after she properly received the kahuna title through a ritual.
In A Grand Debut!, Hapu performed the ritual with Tapu Fini and officially received the title of island kahuna. Later, she faced off against Ash in a grand trial but was defeated. As a reward for his victory, Hapu presented Ash a box of type-specific Z-Crystals and allowed him to choose from one of them as his prize. As gratitude for his hard work, Ash let Pikachu choose for him, and he picked the Steelium Z. Later, as Ash and his classmates headed back home to Melemele Island, Hapu gave them some Poni radish as a parting gift before saying her farewells.
In The Dealer of Destruction!, Hapu, her fellow kahunas, and Lusamine helped Professor Kukui reveal the Alola League to the public. In A High-Speed Awakening!, Hapu watched the Vikavolt race. Afterwards, Hapu gave Sophocles a Z-Ring as a reward for helping out the other contestants' Vikavolt when Team Rocket tried to capture them.
In Chasing Memories, Creating Dreams!, Hapu fought Gladion in the Poni Island grand trial and lost. In Battle Royal 151!, she appeared alongside her fellow kahunas, acting as a referee during the Battle Royal round of the Manalo Conference. In The Battlefield of Truth and Love!, Hapu refereed the fourth pair of first-round matches: one between Kiawe and Acerola, and the other between Gladion and Lillie. In Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Strategy!, she refereed the second-round match between James and Gladion. Hapu observed the rest of the battles from the stands for the remainder of the tournament. After the final battle ended, Hapu attended the award ceremony for the winner, only for it to be interrupted when a Guzzlord arrived at the stadium through an Ultra Wormhole.
In Z-Move Showdown!, Hapu and the other island kahunas joined forces to battle Guzzlord. The guardian deities later came to their assistance, using their powers to keep Guzzlord in place long enough for Hapu and the others to fire off their Z-Moves. The combined attacks launched Guzzlord back into the wormhole it came out of, successfully sending it back into Ultra Space.
In Exhibition Unmasked!, Fiery Surprises!, and From Z to Shining Z!, Hapu watched the exhibition match between Ash and Professor Kukui.
Hapu appeared in a fantasy in Dreams of the Sun and Moon!.
Character
Hapu is a particularly reserved individual. Since her grandfather's passing, she has grown accustomed to spending her days by herself. She is often seen harvesting Poni radishes to relive the days she spent with her grandfather. However, in That's Some Spicy Island Research!, after encountering Ash and his classmates, Hapu was initially defensive, though she began to open up to the students after learning they also deeply cared about Pokémon. In her following appearances, Hapu tended to accompany the group and even invited them into her home while they were completing their school projects on Poni Island. She tends to act stoic and denies being lonely, claiming she feels comfortable being alone even to her own Pokémon.
She holds herself in high regard and speaks in a rather sophisticated manner, using longer and old-fashioned sentences to express herself. She is also quick to judge others, such as when she assumed Ash was the one behind the theft of her radishes, despite having no evidence to support this. Upon being proven wrong, Hapu is also able to easily and quickly recognize her mistakes and apologize. At the end of A Grand Debut!, she even agreed to battle Ash again just for fun, something she wouldn't do before.
Being the granddaughter of a former island kahuna, Hapu possesses great, intimate knowledge behind the concept and true meaning of being a kahuna, while also showcasing vast knowledge about the myths surrounding Tapu Fini and its abilities. She is an impassioned battler who seeks to truly challenge any opponents to prove their worth. Her dedication to her island's history and traditions led Tapu Fini to recognize Hapu as being a worthy next island kahuna in A Grand Debut!.

It reappeared in Chasing Memories, Creating Dreams!, where it was shown battling and losing to Gladion's Lycanroc in a grand trial battle.
Golurk's known moves are Flash Cannon and High Horsepower.
- Main article: Hapu's Mudsdale
Mudsdale is Hapu's second known Pokémon. She uses it to transport Poni radishes by loading them on bags on its side. When confronting Team Skull, she used Mudsdale to battle them and easily won. In A Grand Debut!, Mudsdale was used in Hapu's grand trial against Ash. Despite its strength, Mudsdale was eventually defeated when Pikachu splashed water on it, simulating the effects of Soak, allowing it to defeat it with Gigavolt Havoc.

Pokémon Adventures
Hapu debuted in Thieving and Boss Crabominable. She was first mentioned by Hala, Olivia, and Nanu, who all agreed to name her the next island kahuna of Poni Island. She first appeared in person at the Seafolk Village, where she rescued Sun from a group of wild Crabrawler led by a Crabominable. With Sun's help, Hapu eventually defeated Crabominable and its minions. Afterward, Hapu received a Sparkling Stone from Tapu Fini, who had been watching the battle.
In Battle in Vast Poni Canyon, Hapu decided to travel to her grandfather's grave on Vast Poni Canyon and tell him that she became Poni's next kahuna. As she and Sun traveled, Crabominable appeared, asking to join Hapu's team. Hapu rejected Crabominable's request and suggested it join Sun's team instead, which it reluctantly agreed to. Hapu then revealed she possessed the Moon Flute and asked Sun if he was capable of playing it. Later, Hapu and Sun witnessed Nebby and another Cosmoem fly towards the Poni Altar. Hapu decided to postpone the grave visit and follow the two Protostar Pokémon.
In Play the Melody That Echoes in the Altar, Hapu and Sun were cornered by a group of Aether Foundation Employees demanding that Hapu come with them to the Poni Altar. The Employees were defeated by a Xurkitree that had been knocked out by Gladion, who had Lillie with him. After the Employees retreated, Hapu noticed Lillie had the Sun Flute meant to go with her Moon Flute. The four guardian deities of Alola appeared and took Sun and both flutes to the Poni Altar while Hapu, Gladion, and Lillie followed after them.
In Summon the Emissaries of the Moon and the Sun, Hapu and the others met Anabel and discovered that Sun and Moon used the flutes to evolve Nebby and the other Cosmoem into Lunala and Solgaleo, respectively. Anabel received a call from Looker, who told her that a large number of Ultra Beasts made their way to Poni Island. While Hapu, Moon, Gladion, Anabel, and Hapu fought off the beasts, Solgaleo was possessed by a Necrozma that appeared from an Ultra Wormhole. Necrozma grabbed Sun and dragged him into the wormhole, forcing Moon and Lunala to chase after them.
In Adventure in the Dark Dimension, the island kahunas and Trial Captains were revealed to have spent six months on Exeggutor Island training to prepare for another clash with the Ultra Beasts. After their training was finished, Sophocles and Molayne took everyone to Mount Lanakila, where a wormhole had opened up earlier. Shortly after they arrived, their ship was attacked by a group of Aether Foundation Employees and their Ultra Beasts. With the Z-Moves they had acquired, Hapu and the others managed to defeat the Ultra Beasts.
