}}
Ekans (Japanese: アーボ Arbo) is a Poison Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Arbok starting at level 22.

Biology
Biology
Physiology
Ekans is a purple, snake  Pokémon. Its eyes, underbelly, the thick stripe around its neck, and the rattle are yellow. Ekans have three pairs of black lines encircling their body, and another line connects to each slit-pupil eye and curves toward its nose. Its large mouth has a round, pink tongue and no visible teeth. While painful, a newborn Ekans's bite is not venomous. This Pokémon grows longer with age.
This reptilian Pokémon resembles a snake (its English name even being an anagram of the word "snake" spelled backward while other languages use an anagram of the word "boa"). It has a rattle at the tip of its tail, and is mostly purple while its underbelly, eyes, rattle, and the "bands" on it are yellow.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
Ekans live in List of Pokémon by habitat, moving stealthily through the grass. It can also be found in forests and desolate wastelands, where it preys on Eggs from Pidgey and Spearow nests but will strike other prey from behind. By flicking its tongue out, it can detect danger and the scent of prey. Its jaw can detach to swallow large prey, but such a meal can make Ekans too heavy to move or become stuck and cause them to faint. It wraps itself around tree branches at night to rest. If not in a tree, it will coil itself up—a position in which it can defend itself from all directions. In the second movie, it is revealed to possess some swimming abilities. As shown in Pokémon Sleep,  Ekans are known to sleep with their bodies all coiled up. It is believed that Ekans do this to terrify foes, no matter which direction the foe is.

Behavior
Before Generation II, Ekans and its evolved form, Arbok, were the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Glare.
Like actual snakes, Ekans will lash out with a bite when frightened by anything it sees as a threat. If one happens to be bitten by a young Ekans, they are lucky. As an Ekans doesn't possess the ability to add poison to its bite until after it evolves into an Arbok, though this last bit of information clashes with Ekans's dungeon phrase.

Habitat
Evolution
Ekans evolves into Arbok.
Ekans live in grassy savannas and plains.

Diet
Main article: Pokémon food

Ekans favorite food is eggs from Pidgey and Spearow nests.

Ekans was part of "Team Meanies" in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters out of the Gate! Special. Gengar commanded the Poisonous Snake Pokémon to eat all the berries Team Go-Getters collected. At one point, Ekans was incorrectly referred to as Arbok by Gengar. While this was an intentional error that Ekans rebuked in the original version (due to the similarities in the Japanese names), this came across as a general mistake in the dub and was corrected in reairings of the episode.

Major appearances
| 28 || Mud Bomb || Ground || Special
Jessie's Ekans
|-
Jessie received an Ekans as a chūgen gift (a birthday gift in the dub) prior to the start of the series. It debuted in Pokémon Emergency!, which also marked the species' debut. It was extremely loyal to her and eventually evolved into an Arbok in Dig Those Diglett! just to make her happy.
| 33 || Gastro Acid || Poison || Status

|-
Team Meanies
| 36 || Haze || Ice || Status
Ekans was part of Team Meanies in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate!. Gengar commanded the Poisonous Snake Pokémon to eat all of the Berries Team Go-Getters had collected. At one point, Ekans was incorrectly referred to as Arbok by Gengar. While this was an intentional error that Ekans rebuked in the original version (due to the similarities between the Japanese names), this came across as a general mistake in the dub and was corrected in reruns of the episode.

* In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Ekans was originally known as "Arbo", its romanized Japanese name.
*An Ekans was originally going to be featured in Pokémon Snap, shown in an early test shot of an environment that was never featured in the final product, the same with Arbok.
* In early official art of Ekans, all of the bands on its body were colored yellow instead of just the one on its "neck". This was changed in later art.
*Ekans is the only Pokémon that can learn Poison Tail through breeding.
* An Ekans was originally going to be featured in Snap, as shown in an early test shot of an environment that was never featured in the final product. This is also true of its evolution, Arbok.
*According to Silver's Pokédex entry an Ekans bite (at least a young one's) is not poisonous, to the same point it is still able to use poison moves probably due to its matching type it could also be attributed to the fact that some snakes can spit poison instead of injecting into to their enemy through use of a bite. In addition, the bite has been called painful and that (according to Mystery Dungeon) fangs are also poisonous despite these claims its fangs have never actually been visible.
* Ekans is one of fourteen Pokémon that one can collect foreign Pokédex entries for in Diamond and Pearl.
*It is interesting to note that in more recent pictures of Ekans only one band has been visible that being the one on its neck. However, in older pictures, Ekans is seen with the band around its neck in addition to two other ones located on one of its coil and close to its rattle. It is unknown why the other bands were removed. It could be assumed that the band located lower on its body could just be covered up but the one on its tail should still be visible.
* Ekans has never been scanned with a Pokédex in the animated series, despite debuting in the second episode of the original series. Thusly, it is the Pokémon with the most episodes aired after its debut without it getting a Pokédex entry.

Origin
Origin
It appears to be based upon a boa and rattlesnake.
Ekans seems to be based on various snakes. Its venom bite and tail rattlesnake#Anatomy are similar to a rattlesnake, while its lack of visible teeth and diet of eggs are similar to an dasypeltis. The single yellow stripe around its neck is reminiscent of the ring-necked snake, and the line connecting its eyes is reminiscent of the marking on the back of the Indian cobra's hood. The fact that it is in the Dragon and its ability to learn Glare may be a reference to the legendary basilisk, a venomous, serpentine dragon said to be able to kill people with its stare.

Ekans (Japanese: アーボ Arbo) is a Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Arbok starting at level 22.

Biology

Ekans is a purple, serpentine Pokémon.

Ekans live in grassy savannas and plains, moving stealthily through the grass.

Before Generation II, Ekans and its evolved form, Arbok, were the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Glare.

In the anime

Main series

Major appearances

Jessie's Ekans

Jessie received an Ekans as a chūgen gift (a birthday gift in the dub) prior to the start of the series. It debuted in Pokémon Emergency!, which also marked the species' debut. It was extremely loyal to her and eventually evolved into an Arbok in Dig Those Diglett! just to make her happy.

Team Meanies

Ekans was part of Team Meanies in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate!. Gengar commanded the Poisonous Snake Pokémon to eat all of the Berries Team Go-Getters had collected. At one point, Ekans was incorrectly referred to as Arbok by Gengar. While this was an intentional error that Ekans rebuked in the original version (due to the similarities between the Japanese names), this came across as a general mistake in the dub and was corrected in reruns of the episode.

Other

In A Poached Ego!, multiple Ekans were captured by Rico. Jessie released her Arbok along with James's Weezing so they could protect these Ekans and a group of captured Koffing.

In Turning Heads and Training Hard!, a Team Skull Grunt's Ekans was quickly defeated by Ilima and his Eevee. In Battle Royal 151!, it competed in the Manalo Conference, only to be defeated by Ilima's Eevee again.

In Dreams Are Made of These!, Goh caught an Ekans during a Pokémon Orienteering competition. It has since made further appearances in Pokémon Journeys: The Series.

Trivia

Ken Sugimori artwork of Ekans from Pokémon Red and Blue
 • In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Ekans was originally known as "Arbo", its romanized Japanese name.
 • In early official art of Ekans, all of the bands on its body were colored yellow instead of just the one on its "neck". This was changed in later art.
 • An Ekans was originally going to be featured in Pokémon Snap, as shown in an early test shot of an environment that was never featured in the final product. This is also true of its evolution, Arbok.
 • Ekans is one of fourteen Pokémon that one can collect foreign Pokédex entries for in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
 • Ekans has never been scanned with a Pokédex in the animated series, despite debuting in the second episode of the original series. Thusly, it is the Pokémon with the most episodes aired after its debut without it getting a Pokédex entry.

Origin

Ekans seems to be based on various snakes. Its venomous bite and tail rattle are similar to a rattlesnake, while its lack of visible teeth and diet of eggs are similar to an egg-eating snake. The single yellow stripe around its neck is reminiscent of the ring-necked snake, and the line connecting its eyes is reminiscent of the marking on the back of the Indian cobra's hood. The fact that it is in the Dragon Egg Group and its ability to learn Glare may be a reference to the legendary basilisk, a venomous, serpentine dragon said to be able to kill people with its stare.

Name origin

Ekans is snake spelled backwards.[1][2]

Arbo may be derived from cobra or ボア boa spelled backwards.
