Major appearances
Wailord debuted in Having a Wailord of a Time. The Float Whale Pokémon was stuck on a beach near a Pokémon Center. TRT tried to haul it away, but a Combusken foiled their plans.

In Island Time, a Wailord evolved from a Wailmer that befriended Robin in order to transport Ash and ashfr across the ocean. The group disembarked when they came across a ship heading for Ever Grande City.

In Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, Manaphy encountered multiple Wailord and rode atop one during the group's voyage to Samiya. Several later actively participated in the showdown between the Water Pokémon and the Phantom and his crew. One briefly reappeared in a montage in The Rise of Darkrai, which chronicled the preceding nine movies.

In PK19, both Pikachu and MTR's groups landed on top of a Wailord. It was eventually disturbed by Jessie's Haze and was prompted to use Brine, which sent them all blasting off.

In Leading a Stray!, a Wailord evolved from a Wailmer that Ash helped after it was separated from its family of Wailord.

In The Road to Humilau!, Marlon used a Wailord to transport him, Ash, and Cameron to the Humilau Gym.

In Pikachu's Exciting Adventure!, Ash's Meltan was trapped inside a Wailord. Pikachu and Lycanroc unknowingly went inside to search for Meltan, only to burst out from its blowhole.

In A Test in Paradise!, Jessie pulled a Rocket Prize Master from the Rocket Prize Master. However, its splashing caused them trouble aboard a raft.

In The Good, The Bad, and The Lucky!, Team Rocket was briefly swallowed by a Wailord.

In Ride, Lapras, Ride!, a Wailmer evolved into Wailord after being freed from being stuck in a hole, only to be trapped again as it evolved, until Ash and his friends freed it again. It reappeared in a flashback in Ash and Latios.

Main series
Wailord (Japanese: ホエルオー Whaloh) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Wailmer starting at level 40.

Biology

Wailord is a huge cetacean Pokémon resembling the blue whale. It has small beady eyes, a huge mouth, and a tan throat and underbelly that are lined with grooves. Its back is blue with four white spots running down its spine, and two breathing nostrils on top of its head. It has two pairs of blue fins along its sides, a smaller third pair of tan fins on its rear, and a horizontal tail at the back.

Wailord is one of the largest Pokémon to have been discovered. Due to its immense size, it can make giant splashes by jumping out of the water and then crashing back down. These shockwaves allow Wailord to knock out its opponents and herd its prey. Wailord is able to eat large quantities at one time, such as schools of Wishiwashi. However, it will flee from Wishiwashi when the latter is in its School Form.

Wailord has an easygoing temperament and loves to play. Its size causes it to have almost no natural enemies; its only known predator is Dhelmise. Wailord lives in the sea in large groups called pods. These pods, which often include Wailmer, travel together in order to search for food. When a Wailmer is attacked by its predators Sharpedo or Dhelmise, its whole pod works to defend it. Wailord can dive deep at 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) in one breath.

Wailord is popular due to its size. As a result, Wailord-watching is a favorite sightseeing activity in various parts of the world. However, Wailord are known to be driven away by fishermen when they become too numerous, so they don't eat too much fish Pokémon.

Several later actively participated in the showdown between the Water Pokémon and the Phantom and his crew. One briefly reappeared in a montage in The Rise of Darkrai, which chronicled the preceding nine movies.

In PK19, both Pikachu and Meowth's groups landed on top of a Wailord. It was eventually disturbed by Seviper's Haze and was prompted to use Brine, which sent them all blasting off.

Trivia

Icon for Wailord Aquaculture

Origin

Wailord appears to be based on the blue whale, the largest known animal to ever exist. It also resembles a submarine, a blimp, and a torpedo.

Name origin

Wailord is a combination of whale, wail (a prolonged cry), and lord.[1]

Whaloh may be derived from whale. It is also a combination of 吠える hoeru (to wail, to bellow) and 王 ō (king).[2]
