Vikavolt (Japanese: クワガノン Kuwagannon) is a dual-type Bug/Electric Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

It evolves from Charjabug when leveled up in a special magnetic field or when exposed to a Thunder Stone. It is the final form of Grubbin.

(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for these details.)

Biology

Vikavolt is a beetle-like Pokémon with a large pair of mandibles. Its small orange face has robotic, yellow eyes and is covered by a blue carapace. The mandibles extend from this helmet. They are blue on the inner surface and yellow on the outer surface. At the base of each mandible is a large spike and the inside is lined with short spikes. Its body is black and divided into three sections by yellow rings. The last two sections have a yellow spot on each side. On its back is a pair of wide, flat wings that are transparent with blue elytra. It has four legs; the front pair of legs has two claws, while the back pair has only one.

Vikavolt produces electricity with an organ in its abdomen and controls it with its huge jaws to fire powerful electromagnetic beams. Vikavolt shoots these to strike down bird Pokémon. When it clasps a Charjabug in its legs, it is able to utilize it as an extra battery. This allows it to rapidly fire its powerful beam attacks. However, during fierce aerial fights, it will release Charjabug to make itself lighter and more mobile. It is an adept flier, capable of acrobatic maneuvers such as tailspins and sharp turns. Even as it weaves through complicated tangles of branches in the forest, it is able to maintain high-speed flight.[1] It is known to have a rivalry with Pinsir and Heracross. As shown in the episode A High-Speed Awakening!, it likes to drink tree sap. In that same episode, it is shown that, in Alola, there is a competition known as the Vikavolt race, where Trainers can have their Vikavolt race for the chance to win a Buginium Z.

A special Vikavolt in Alola serves as the Totem Pokémon for the Hokulani Observatory's Island challenge. This Vikavolt possesses an energy that originates from Ultra Wormholes, which takes the form of a golden, flaring aura. This energy is called Z-Power.

Vikavolt evolves from Charjabug when leveled up in a special magnetic field. There is no special magnetic field in Pokémon Sword and Shield or Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, so from Generation VIII onwards, Charjabug is also able to evolve into Vikavolt when exposed to a Thunder Stone.

Trivia

  • Vikavolt shares its category with Pinsir. They are both known as the Stag Beetle Pokémon.
  • Vikavolt has the highest base Special Attack stat of all Bug-type Pokémon.
  • Vikavolt, along with its pre-evolved forms, were designed by Hitoshi Ariga.[2]

Origin

Vikavolt appears to be based on a stag beetle and a railgun. Its straight, scissor-like mandibles resemble those of Lucanus hayashii and some Cyclommatus species of beetles. Its original evolution method of levelling up in a magnetic field might come from various insects such as termites (which also have mandibles), which use geomagnetism to navigate their nests and orient their construction. It may also be based on the Vic Viper, the playable ship from the Gradius arcade games. Its body shape resembles a jet fighter, with its long, straight mandibles matching the Vic Viper's distinctive frontal prongs, and its behavior of darting around waiting for openings while firing powerful beams also describes gameplay from side-scrolling shooters such as Gradius, while its apparently-contradictory slow base speed may come from the way the screen automatically scrolls slowly in those games.

Name origin

Vikavolt may come from vise grip and volt. It may also come from Vic Viper.

Kuwagannon may be a combination of 鍬形虫 kuwagatamushi (stag beetle) and cannon.
