Mantine (Japanese: マンタイン Mantain) is a dual-type Water/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves from Mantyke when it levels-up with a Remoraid in the party.

Biology

Physiology

Mantine's appearance changes from that of its pre-evolution in several ways. It is larger, has wider fins, and loses its original back markings, which are replaced by two ring-shaped marks. Its coloration is also greyer, and its back is a darker blue, along with gaining a wavy outline on its wings. It gains a streamer-like tail and longer "antennae". It also possesses two pairs of gill slits on its underside.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Unlike real-life manta rays, which can only "fly" through water, Mantine can literally fly in the air if they gain enough speed. They soar gracefully out of the water. Mantine are also able to naturally learn moves considered enigmatic for a Water-type Pokémon, such as Psybeam, Bullet Seed, Signal Beam and Confuse Ray. However, several of these moves can be understood if one takes into consideration the Remoraid that is attached to Mantine's wing, as it learns all of these moves with the exception of Confuse Ray.

Behavior

Mantine are mostly docile. They allow Remoraid to latch onto themselves. When they build up speed, they jump out of the water.

Habitat

Mantine like to live in large open seas.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Mantine is probably a filter feeder that lives on plankton.

Major appearances

Mantine was used by a trainer that was searching for the Silver Wing in Mantine Overboard.

In Just Add Water, Mantine appeared under the ownership of Dorian, owner of the unofficial Coastline Gym.

In Steamboat Willies!, a Mantine which belongs to the owner of a ship helped Ash and Dawn saving the ship from falling off a waterfall.

Minor appearances

Mantine first appeared as a dreamed up Pokémon in Spell of the Unown. Molly Hale used it against Misty's Staryu.

Brock's mother, Lola, owns a Mantine which was used in her battle against Brock's Onix in A Family That Battles Together Stays Together!.

In Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, Jack Walker uses his Capture Styler on one of these Kite Pokémon so it can help Jack get away from The Phantom during the beginning of the movie.

Trivia

  • Mantine can be seen as a parallel to Skarmory. Both of them are Flying-type Generation II Pokémon. Mantine is exclusive to Gold and HeartGold, while Skarmory is is exclusive to Silver and SoulSilver.
    • They also have the exact same base stats, except that Mantine is oriented towards the special stats, while Skarmory is more based in the physical stats.
  • Mantine is tied with Kyogre for having the highest Special Defense out of all Template:Type2 Pokémon.
    • Mantine has the highest Special Defense out of all non-legendary Flying-types.
  • Mantine is the fourth Pokémon to have more than one Pokémon in one of its sprites. The first is Kangaskhan, although Kangaskhan is just holding its own baby, not a Pokémon of an entirely different species. The second and third are the morphed Shellder in all of Slowbro's and Slowking's sprites.
    • However, Remoraid is absent from all of its Generation IV and V sprites.
  • Mantine's shiny sprites in the second and third Generations also show the Remoraid attached to it to be an alternate color; however, they are depicted as light blue rather than gray or pink, the usual color of a shiny Remoraid.
    • Mantine's shiny sprite's color may also be noted to be very similar to its pre-evolution, Mantyke's normal form's color tone.
    • Remoraid on Mantine's Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and LeafGreen sprite has the same color for both, normal and shiny sprite.

Origin

It is similar to a manta ray, with some kite-like aspects.

Name origin

Mantine's name, an anglicization of its Japanese name, may be a combination of manta and marine. It may also be a combination of manta and brine.

In other languages

  • German: Mantax - From manta.
  • French: Demanta - From Démon (Demon) referring to its horns, and manta.
  • Korean: 만타인 Mantain
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 巨翅飛魚 Jù Chì Fēi Yú - Literally "Giant wing flying fish".
