Mewtwo (Japanese: ミュウツー) is a Template:Type2 legendary Pokémon cloned from a Mew.

The story of Mewtwo is chronicled in The Birth of Mewtwo (CD drama), Mewtwo Strikes Back (movie), Mewtwo Returns (TV special), and the bonus short from Mewtwo Returns "The Uncut Story of Mewtwo's Origin". He made a brief appearance in the anime in The Battle of the Badge, when Giovanni used him to defeat Gary Oak, and in Showdown at the Po-ké Corral, where he escapes from Team Rocket headquarters (a scene also chronicled in Mewtwo Strikes Back, and later seen again in Mewtwo Returns).

History

Young Mewtwo crying as Ambertwo dies

Approximately twenty years before the present, Team Rocket discovered that a Mew was living in the Andes Mountains. Many years later, under the orders of its new leader, Giovanni, Rocket members went back to the area to search for fossils. They succeeded in finding an eyelash belonging to Mew. Giovanni asked Dr. Fuji to clone Mew for him. Fuji agreed because he wanted to use Team Rocket's research funds to attempt to clone his deceased daughter, Amber.

One month after the discovery of the eyelash, Mewtwo was successfully created and was stored at New Island. At this point, he was still not fully grown and lived in a large test tube alongside a tube containing Ambertwo. Fuji and Giovanni thought Mewtwo was sleeping inside his tube, but he was able to communicate telepathically with Ambertwo. However, because the lifeforce of a human is not as strong as a Pokémon's, the Amber clone died. Mewtwo also grew alongside three other clones, a Bulbasaurtwo, Squirtletwo, and Charmandertwo. However, these clones died shortly before the Amber clone, suggesting that Mewtwo's lifeforce is even stronger than a normal Pokémon's.

Eventually, Mewtwo fully matured and broke out of his test tube. Those responsible for his creation were happy that they succeeded in their goal of creating the world's most powerful Pokémon. Enraged and confused about the circumstances that led to his creation and powers, Mewtwo attacked the scientists on New Island. Despite the efforts of security systems that attempted to control him, Mewtwo destroyed the island and all the scientists on it.

Immediately thereafter, Giovanni found Mewtwo and convinced him to help with Team Rocket's goal of controlling the world. Mewtwo's power was focused, as well as weakened and controlled, by a robotic suit of armor as he performed tasks such as battling under Giovanni within the Viridian Gym and helping Team Rocket capture Pokémon. Eventually Mewtwo became tired of being used by Giovanni. He developed a strong hatred for humans, and thought that they were weak beings only interested in power and greed; he also despised the Pokémon who served humans. He escaped from Giovanni, destroying Team Rocket headquarters in the process, and relocated to his birthplace on New Island, where he built his own headquarters. Mewtwo then issued a challenge to several strong Pokémon Trainers, including Ash Ketchum. He used his powers to create a storm that would serve as a test to see who could make it to the island. Only a handful of Trainers managed to brave the storm and arrive, including Ash and his friends. Upon revealing himself, Mewtwo challenged the Trainers with a Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard (all cloned) to prove his superiority to human Trainers and the superiority of cloned Pokémon to trained Pokémon. To do this, he used a variation of the Poké Balls used by Trainers. Once caught in the Balls, the Pokémon that had been brought to the island were cloned in an upstairs laboratory. However, before Mewtwo could defeat the Trainers and move out into the world, Mew appeared. The two Pokémon fought and ceased battle when Ash was caught in their crossfire and turned to stone. After Ash is revived by the tears of the nearby Pokémon, clone and original alike, Mewtwo experiences a change of heart and stops his destructive rampage. Wanting to find himself, Mewtwo erased the memories of those present and he and his clones left New Island for Johto.

A few years later, Giovanni found Mewtwo's hiding place via one of their satellites and began a plan to capture him once again. However, this plan was foiled when Mewtwo again met with Ash, who did not remember their previous encounter. Giovanni restrained Mewtwo, but Ash and friends helped him to escape and defeat Giovanni. At the end of the ordeal, Mewtwo erased Giovanni and his soldiers' memories of him, and decided to move throughout the world searching for the meaning of his life.

In the epilogue to Mewtwo Returns and in some TV series opening sequences and movie previews, Mewtwo has been seen wearing a plain brown cape and moving across rooftops at night.

He also had a passing mention in the special The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, when the mirage Mewtwo was created, Mirage Master claimed "This is not the Mewtwo you are familiar with", possibly meaning he saw Pikachu's memory of Mewtwo.

Pokémon

Created

Pikachu
Mewtwo's Pikachu

Pikachu was cloned from Ash's Pikachu, and battled against it. Dubbed "Pikachutwo" or "Pikatwo" by the fandom, this clone was also central to the plot of Mewtwo Returns.

Pikachu's only known move is Thunderbolt.

Venusaur
Mewtwo's Venusaur

This Venusaur battled against Corey's Venusaur, Bruteroot. It easily defeated Bruteroot with a Vine Whip, sending it flying.

Charizard
Mewtwo's Charizard

Mewtwo's cloned Charizard battled against Ash's Charizard, winning the match with Seismic Toss.

Blastoise
Mewtwo's Blastoise

The cloned Blastoise battled against Neesha's own Blastoise, Shellshocker. It easily defeated Shellshocker with a Rapid Spin attack.

Cloned Pokémon
Mewtwo's Cloned Pokémon

Mewtwo cloned many of the Pokémon owned by the Trainers that came to New Island. Other than the Pokémon already mentioned above, Mewtwo's army included Pokémon cloned from Ash's Bulbasaur and Squirtle; Misty's Psyduck; Brock's Vulpix; Corey's Pidgeot, Scyther, Hitmonlee, Rhyhorn, and Sandslash; Neesha's Wigglytuff, Rapidash, Dewgong, Vileplume, and Ninetales; Fergus's Gyarados, Nidoqueen, Seadra, Vaporeon, Golduck, and Tentacruel; and Team Rocket's Meowth.

Bulbasaurtwo, Charmandertwo, and Squirtletwo

Bulbasaurtwo, Charmandertwo, and Squirtletwo are three of the original cloning attempts made by Dr. Fuji, along with Ambertwo and Mewtwo himself. Unfortunately the cloning attempts failed, and all three Pokémon died quickly after.

Used

Fearow
Mewtwo's Fearow

Mewtwo used this Fearow to find Trainers worthy of coming to New Island. It has a camera attached to its neck so Mewtwo can see what it flies over.

Dragonite
Mewtwo's Dragonite

Mewtwo used this Dragonite as a messenger to deliver invitations for Trainers to come to New Island.

Trivia

Mewtwo overlooking a city at the end of Mewtwo Returns
  • In the first movie, Mewtwo used Shadow Ball despite this move not being released at the time.
  • The cloned Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur look extremely similar to their cloned evolved forms. Mewtwo also mentions when he introduces them to Ash, Misty, Brock, Fergus, Corey, Neesha, and Nurse Joy that he also had a Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur, and that they evolved, which hints that he may have cloned them from his childhood friends.
  • The city that Mewtwo is seen overlooking at the end of Mewtwo Returns bears a great resemblance to real life New York City. Buildings that resemble the Chrysler Building and Metlife Building can be seen in the distance. The narrator refers to it as "a far away city."
