Genesect (Japanese: ゲノセクト Genesect) is a dual-type Bug/Steel legendary Pokémon.

Genesect was leaked in the August issue of CoroCoro magazine on July 11, 2012, and it was officially revealed on July 14, 2012.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, though the Drive inserted in the cannon on its back is visibly different within its sprites depending on the Drive it is holding.

Genesect is the final Pokémon in the Unova Pokédex and National Pokédex within Generation V.

Biology

Physiology

Genesect has a purple metal body with a saucer-shaped head, two large red eyes and a small white part that could either be its mouth or a vent. Its body has an insect-like appearance. It has a powerful cannon on its back that was apparently added as part of the bizarre modifications made to it by Team Plasma. It could possibly be a sort of cyborg, due to its given enhancements and Steel typing.

Gender differences

Genesect is a genderless species.

Special abilities

Shiny Genesect in its High-Speed Flight Form

Being modified by Team Plasma, Genesect is equipped with a powerful cannon. It is the only Pokémon capable of learning the move Techno Blast, an attack which changes type depending on the Drive it holds. It is indicated that even before Team Plasma powered up Genesect, it was a skilled and ruthless hunter.

By folding up its limbs and connecting its head to the cannon on its back, Genesect can assume a flying saucer-like form, allowing it to fly. This form is known as the High-Speed Flight Form (Japanese: 高速飛行形態).

History

Genesect was revived from a Fossil and technologically enhanced by Team Plasma to create the most powerful Pokémon ever. N had the project cancelled and the P2 Laboratory closed because he felt that Pokémon, who he thought to be perfect beings, would lose their beauty if modified by science. However, Scientist Dudley kept working on it, angry that N denied his talent. This scientist reconstructed Genesect and installed the cannon on its back.

Major appearances

Genesect is set to appear in the sixteenth Pokémon movie, in which five will be featured: four normal and one Shiny. The Red Genesect is the leader of the group.

An image of Genesect was seen on a computer monitor at the ruined P2 Laboratory in BW110.

According to CoroCoro, the Red Genesect is set to appear in Best Wishes! Season 2: Episode N prior to the release of the film.

Trivia

  • Despite its Pokédex entries stating that it is a resurrected prehistoric Pokémon, it is not Rock-type like Fossil Pokémon that can be resurrected by the player, though this could be due to the modifications made to it by Team Plasma.
  • Genesect is the only Bug-type legendary Pokémon, excluding Arceus holding the Insect Plate.
  • Genesect has the highest base stat total of all Bug-type Pokémon.
  • Genesect is one of only two Bug-type Pokémon that can learn Fly. The other is Volcarona.
    • Neither of these Pokémon are part Flying-type (despite being dual-type Pokémon), nor can they have the Ability Levitate, and were both introduced in Generation V.
  • Genesect is the only Pokémon which names a villainous team in its Pokédex entry, in this case, Team Plasma.
  • Genesect is the last Pokémon in National Pokédex order.
  • Of the Generation V event legendary Pokémon, Genesect is the only one that does not have an event signature move. Victini, Keldeo and Meloetta obtain their respective signature moves through events, whereas Genesect has Techno Blast as a starting move.
  • Despite it being its signature move, Genesect cannot receive STAB from Techno Blast.
  • Genesect's backstory is similar to Mewtwo's: both were created by villainous teams in at least one canon, and genetically engineered and enhanced to be more powerful.
  • Genesect's different sprites are not recognized as form differences by the Pokédex. The same is true for Arceus.
  • As of this episode, Genesect is the only Gen V Pokémon to not have it's debut in either a movie or episode, as it's due to debut on 13 July, 2013 during this film

Origin

Genesect is generally based on the giant insects of the Paleozoic era, which existed for 300 million years, making it as old as the cockroach. Its Steel-type features that give it a somewhat robotic appearance may be a reference to alien robots in science fiction media; however, this may be because of Team Plasma's modifications. Its design is also possibly inspired from the "Artillery Mech" concept used in various Sci-Fi anime produced in Japan.

Name origin

Genesect may be a combination of gene, genetics, genome, or genesis, and insect.
