The Ice type (Japanese: こおりタイプ Ice type) is one of the eighteen types. Notable Trainers who specialize in Ice-type Pokémon are Lorelei, a former member of the Indigo Plateau Elite Four, Pryce of Mahogany Town, Glacia of the Hoenn Elite Four, Candice of Snowpoint City, Brycen, the former Gym Leader of Icirrus City, and Wulfric of Snowbelle City. Prior to changes in Generation IV, all damaging Ice-type moves were special, but they may now also be physical depending on the attack.

Characteristics

Defense

The Ice type is considered by many to be the worst of all types defensively. It only resists itself and, while immune to freezing and the effects of hail, it carries weaknesses to Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel. Additionally, double weaknesses are common amongst Ice types, especially to the Fighting type. As a result, most Ice types have more weaknesses than resistances.

However, some Ice types, such as Avalugg, have high defenses in order to compensate for their many weaknesses, which can help them withstand super-effective attacks and remain on the field longer.

Offense

Offensively, because the fact that double weaknesses to Ice are fairly common, especially due to Dragon and Flying types, Ice is one of the most commonly-used attacking types. Ice also pairs well with other common attacking types, notably Ground, which covers all of Ice's weaknesses except Fighting, and Electric, which covers Ice's ineffectiveness against Water. Some Ice-type Pokémon can use a few Water-type moves, which cover their weaknesses to Fire and Rock.

Water-type Pokémon are often compared with Ice-type Pokémon, as most of the former can also effectively use Ice attacks, which cover their major weakness of Grass and Dragon, which resist their moves. However, some Ice types have an advantage over Water types due to the introduction of Freeze-Dry in Generation VI (an Ice-type move that is exclusively learned by Ice types and Smeargle), as it can deal super-effective damage to most Water types.

Contest properties

When used in Pokémon Contests, most Ice-type moves become Beautiful moves, with two Cool moves being the only exceptions.

Pokémon

As of Generation VI, there are 35 Ice-type Pokémon or 4.9% of all Pokémon (counting those that are Ice-type in at least one of their forms, including Mega Evolutions), making it tied with Ghost as the rarest type.

Trivia

  • Generation V introduced the most Ice-type Pokémon of any generation, with eight, and Generation VII introduced the fewest Ice-type Pokémon, with only one.
  • Generation I introduced the most Ice-type moves of any generation, with six, and Generation VI introduced the fewest Ice-type moves, with only one.
  • Although the Ice type existed since Generation I, pure Ice-type Pokémon were not introduced until Generation III.
  • Similar to Fire-type moves, all Ice-type moves were Beautiful moves in Generation III.
  • Only the Normal type has a lower number of resistances than the Ice type, having no resistances (but one immunity). Ice only resists itself.
  • There has been a Gym Leader or Elite Four member who specializes in the Ice type introduced in each generation. Three of the Ice-type Gym Leaders, Pryce, Candice, and Brycen, are the seventh Gym Leaders in their respective region. Wulfric is the exception, being the eighth in his region.
  • Ice is the only type that is super effective against the Flying type that does not in turn resist Flying-type moves.
    • It is also the only type that is super effective against the Grass type that does not in turn resist Grass-type moves.
  • Ice-type attacks are resisted by all types that Water-type Pokémon resist.
