Lorenzo (Japanese: ボンゴレ Vongole) is a main character who appeared in Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias. He is the grandfather of Bianca. Lorenzo is also the curator of the Alto Mare's museum, a gondola builder, and the protector of the Legendary Pokémon Latios and Latias.

History

Lorenzo

He first appeared during Ash's visit to the museum where he explained the history of the city and the Defense Mechanism of Alto Mare or DMA for short. Ash got distracted by the presence of Bianca, whom he thought was the seemingly normal girl he had saved earlier, but she was actually Latias disguised as her. He was scolded by Lorenzo for absentmindedly leaning on the DMA.

Ash followed Bianca and Latias to the secret garden of Latios and Latias. Lorenzo arrived just in time to prevent Latios from attacking Ash and Pikachu, and allowed Latias to play with them. He showed Ash the Soul Dew's resting place, a pool of water and then explained that he knew the father of the two Guardians, and went onto protect Latios and Latias after their father's death. As Lorenzo, Bianca, and Ash left the garden, they cut through Lorenzo's workshop where he constructs gondolas.

That night, Lorenzo was later incapacitated by Annie's Espeon. He was later found by Bianca, and they rushed to the museum where they were captured and bound by Ariados. They could only watch helplessly as Oakley used the DMA, and Latios suffered the consequences. Ash, Latias, and Pikachu came to save them and stopped the DMA. Lorenzo warned Annie not to touch the corrupted Soul Dew, but she ignored the warning. Annie touching the corrupted Soul Dew caused the DMA to go out of control, to ruinous effects. Lorenzo was present at Latios's sacrifice and was the first to realize that he had died. The following morning, Lorenzo took Ash and the others out in one of his gondolas to search for the guardians. While Latias was located, Latios confirmed that he had sacrificed himself to protect the city, and gifted Lorenzo and Bianca a new Soul Dew.

Lorenzo later bid farewell to Ash and his friends as they left the city. He later returned to the museum to watch as a construction crew repaired the damaged DMA.

Character

Lorenzo is a kind, wise man, but can also be stern and angry at times, especially wherever Alto Mare's history is concerned. Having witnessed the destructive powers of evil in the past*, Lorenzo holds personal responsibility for the protection of Alto Mare and its two guardians.

Latias
Unknown's Latias
Main article: Latias (M05)

Latias and her brother, Latios, live in the Secret Garden in Alto Mare, where they are the guardians of the Soul Dew. They are friends with Lorenzo and Bianca, who takes care of them both and has kept them a secret since they were young. Latias is particularly close with Bianca, and often shapeshifts and walks around Alto Mare as Bianca.

Latias and Latios presented some very unique powers, such as sight sharing, invisibility, and shapeshifting.

Latios ordered Latias to escape to safety, while he was captured by Annie and Oakley and used to operate the DMA. Latios later sacrificed himself to save Alto Mare, leaving Latias in Lorenzo and Bianca's care.

Trivia

  • In the 1994 book Guide to Venice (ヴェネツィア案内, Venezia Annai) which is a renowned publication about Venice in Japan,[1] there are photos of a particular gondola workshop and its owner, and the appearance of the workshop very closely resembles Lorenzo's workshop, and the owner has similar hairstyle to Lorenzo, causing some fans in Japan to speculate that these could be real-life models of Lorenzo and his workshop.[2]
