Mewtwo (Japanese: ミュウツー) is a Template:Type2 legendary Pokémon cloned from a Mew. His Japanese voice actors are 市村正親 Masachika Ichimura (adult) and 瀧本富士子 Fujiko Takimoto (child). His English voice actors are Phillip Bartlett (Mewtwo Strikes Back) and Dan Green (Mewtwo Returns).

The story of Mewtwo is chronicled in The Birth of Mewtwo (CD drama), Mewtwo Strikes Back (movie), and Mewtwo Returns (TV special). It made a brief appearance in the anime in The Battle of the Badge when Giovanni used him to defeat Gary Oak, and in Showdown at the Po-ké Corral where it escapes from Team Rocket headquarters (a scene also chronicled in Mewtwo Strikes Back).

History

Approximately twenty years before the present, Team Rocket discovered that a Mew was living in the Andes Mountains. Many years later, under the orders of its new leader, Giovanni, Rocket members went back to the area to search for fossils. They succeeded in finding an eyelash belonging to Mew. Giovanni asked Dr. Fuji to clone Mew for him. Fuji agreed because it wanted to use Team Rocket's research funds to attempt to clone his deceased daughter, Amber.

One month after the discovery of the eyelash, Mewtwo was successfully created and was stored at New Island. At this point, it was still not fully grown and lived in a large test tube alongside a tube containing Ambertwo. Fuji and Giovanni thought Mewtwo was sleeping inside his tube, but it was able to communicate telepathically with Ambertwo. However, because the lifeforce of a human is not as strong as a Pokémon's, the Amber clone died.

Eventually, Mewtwo fully matured and broke out of his test tube. Those responsible for his creation were happy that they succeeded in their goal of creating the world's most powerful Pokémon. Enraged and confused about the circumstances that led to his creation and powers, Mewtwo attacked the scientists on New Island. A computer attacked and attempted to kill him to protect the scientists, but Mewtwo quickly recovered and destroyed the island and everyone on it.

Later, Giovanni found Mewtwo and convinced him to help with Team Rocket's goal of controlling the world. Mewtwo's power was focused in a robotic suit of armor, preforming tasks such as battling within the Viridian Gym. Eventually Mewtwo became tired of being used by Giovanni. It developed a strong hatred for humans, and thought that they were weak beings only interested in power and greed, and it also despised the Pokémon who served humans. It escaped from Giovanni, destroying Team Rocket headquarters in the process. It relocated to New Island, his birthplace. There it issued a challenge to several strong Pokémon Trainers, including Ash Ketchum. Only a handful of Trainers made the hard trip to the island, and Mewtwo challenged them to prove his superiority. However, before it could defeat the Trainers and move out into the world, Mew appeared. The two Pokémon fought and only stopped when Ash's life was put in danger. Mew convinced Mewtwo to stop his destructive rampage. Mewtwo, wanting to find himself, erased the memories of those present and left New Island for Johto.

A few years later, Giovanni found Mewtwo's hiding place and began a plan to capture him once again. However, this plan was foiled when it once again met with Ash, who did not remember his previous encounter with Mewtwo. Giovanni restrained Mewtwo, but Ash and friends helped him to escape and defeat Giovanni. At the end of the ordeal, Mewtwo decided to move throughout the world searching for the meaning of his life.

In the epilogue to Mewtwo Returns and in some TV series opening sequences and movie previews, Mewtwo has been seen wearing a plain brown cape and moving across rooftops at night.

Trivia

  • In the first movie, Mewtwo used Shadow Ball despite this move not being released at the time.
  • The cloned Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur look extremely similar to their cloned evolved forms. Mewtwo also mentions when it introduces them to Ash, Misty, Brock, Fergus, Corey, Neesha, and Nurse Joy that it also had a Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur, and that they evolved, which hints that it may have cloned them from his childhood friends.
  • It's implied in Gary's battle with Mewtwo that Mewtwo's armor scrambles the Pokédex's scanning ability, as the Pokédex's screen has static on it when it states that it was unknown and had unavailable data. All undocumented Pokémon both before and after it either were blank on the screen (e.g. Ho-Oh's, Blaziken's and Electivire's first appearances), or were shown, but the Pokédex didn't have any other data (e.g. Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar).
