Duskull (Japanese: ヨマワル Yomawaru) is a Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves into Dusclops starting at level 37, which evolves into Dusknoir when traded while holding a Reaper Cloth.

(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for these details.)

Biology

Duskull's hood

Duskull is a Pokémon which appears to be a stylized personification of the Grim Reaper. Its body resembles a black robe with two bone-shaped patterns on its back. It has a mask that resembles a skull and a single eye that floats between its eye sockets.

Duskull can become invisible, sneaking up on their prey and going through walls. Duskull is primarily a nocturnal Pokémon and has been shown to live in thick forests. Once Duskull chooses a target, it will doggedly pursue the intended victim until the break of dawn. It has been described as enjoying the crying of children, and it is said that this Pokémon will spirit away disobedient children. This is often told to children to make them behave. Duskulls's diet consists of the vital energy of children. All victims of Duskull tend to suffer an intense chill after being drained of their life force.

Evolution

Duskull evolves into Dusclops, which evolves into Dusknoir.

(For specifics on this Pokémon's Evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Main series

Duskull in the anime

Major appearances

Duskull debuted in Camp Pikachu as a friend of a Wynaut aiding the Pichu Brothers. It scared the Pichu Brothers, and later Meowth and Wobbuffet.

In Fear Factor Phony, two Duskull were living at the abandoned mining colony. They could not stand the partying Psychic-type Pokémon in the nearby town, so they created a Haunter-like illusion to scare them away.

In PK15, a Duskull was living in a spooky house.

Minor appearances

Duskull made its main series debut in Get the Show on the Road!. While May was on her way to Professor Birch, Duskull popped up in front of her and scared her.

Trivia

Origin

Duskull may be based on the Grim Reaper or the bogeyman. The Japanese equivalent of the bogeyman is called the Namahage. Its shape is similar to a Hitodama, the Japanese representation of a human soul. Duskull could also take an inspiration from animated skeletons due to its skull mask and bone markings on its back.

Name origin

Duskull may be a combination of dusk and skull.

Yomawaru may be a combination of 妖魔 yōma (ghost), 悪 waru (bad thing), and 夜回り yomawari (night watch). It is also similar to 山童 Yamawaro, a hairy, one-eyed spirit that appeared in The Illustrated Night Parade of a Hundred Demons.
