Sometime before the events of the film, Molly's mother disappeared, supposedly because of Spencer's research (in the Japanese version, her absence was never directly explained, although guidebooks released with the movie revealed that she had been hospitalized before the events of the film). Spencer was left to care for Molly, but because his job requires an undying commitment, she was often left under the care of the servants and housekeepers.

At the beginning of the movie, Molly is being read tales of legendary Pokémon by her father. She states that Entei is her favorite legendary Pokémon because it reminds her of her father. Spencer abruptly leaves after receiving an email involving his research. With his father disappeared to Unown dimension, Molly is left in the care of the family servants. Before he vanished, her father left behind a mysterious puzzle box with Unown-shaped letter tiles.
At the beginning of the movie, Molly was read tales of Legendary Pokémon by her father. She stated that Entei was her favorite Legendary Pokémon because it reminded her of her father. Spencer abruptly left after receiving an email involving his research. When her father later disappeared into the Unown Dimension, Molly was left in the care of the family servants. Before he vanished, her father left behind a mysterious puzzle box with Unown-shaped letter tiles.

Molly uses the tiles to spell "Mama" and "Papa", the people she truly desires, and when she begins to cry the Unown spring to life and grant her wish. The Unown then start to reflect Molly's confusion, anxiety, fear and loneliness with their Hidden Power and this is what forms the main arc of the story.
Upon receiving the box, Molly used the tiles to spell "Mama" and "Papa", the people she truly desired. When she began to cry, the Unown sprung to life and granted her wish, summoning an Entei who was led to believe it is Molly's father. The Unown started to reflect Molly's confusion, anxiety, fear, and loneliness with their Hidden Power, slowly engulfing her mansion and then her hometown, Greenfield, with crystal, driving everyone but Molly away.

The town is engulfed by crystal, enveloping everything and driving everyone but Molly from the mansion. Molly's wish for her parents brings about a bizarre entity: an Entei whom is led to believe it is Molly's father.
Molly decided she needed a mother as well, and had the Entei bring Delia to her after seeing her on television. Upon being confronted by Entei, Delia was hypnotized into believing that she was the girl's true mother and was taken to the mansion. However, the hypnosis was eventually broken when Delia saw her son Ash risking his life while trying to enter the crystallized mansion. Since that moment, Delia tried to reason with Molly, helping and protecting her throughout the movie. Molly became inspired by seeing Ash use his Pokémon to enter the mansion and decided that she wanted to be a Pokémon Trainer. She fell asleep, and Entei left to greet Ash and his friends, bringing along a dream-version of Molly. Molly wished she were older so that she might be a Trainer, and she turned into a teenager.

Once Ash reached Delia, they woke up the real Molly and asked that she escape with them. When Delia revealed that she was leaving, Molly was left heartbroken, and her emotional turmoil caused the Unown to lose some control. Entei appeared to defend her, but after a gruesome battle between him and Ash's Charizard, Molly realized what her wish was doing to those around her, and she agreed to end the illusion and return to reality. This caused the Unown to completely lose control of their psychic concentration. They reached the Unown's chamber and Entei sacrificed himself to drive away the Unown, returning the land and manor to normal. At the same time, the Unown returned to their ruins, returning Spencer from their dimension in the process. He returned to the manor and reunited with his daughter.

Character
With her mother having disappeared several years prior (or having been hospitalized, depending on the version) and her father busy with his work schedule, Molly had become increasingly lonely and withdrawn. Her father's own disappearance only exacerbated this loneliness. The Unown gave Molly the opportunity to live out her wildest fantasies and idealized reality, which appeared to have originated from the fairy-tales her father read to her, twisted together with her strong emotions. From a psychological standpoint, Molly's decision to have Greenfield become a crystal wasteland and surround herself with Pokémon was indicative of her distrust for people.

Molly also expressed strong ambitions to become an extremely strong Pokémon Trainer. As such, she battled both Brock and Misty with Pokémon possessing abnormally high levels of strength. She also took on physical appearances that she believed to be more befitting of a Trainer, though she retained her childish personality.

Molly eventually came to realize that she can achieve her true desires in real life, and this led the Unown to disappear. Her newly acquired Teddiursa is representative of this change.

Molly Hale (Japanese: ミー・スノードン Me Snowdon) is a little girl from Greenfield, and the daughter of researcher Spencer Hale. She is the main antagonist of Spell of the Unown: Entei.

In the movies

Molly under the spell of the Unown, as an 18-year-old

Sometime before the events of the film, Molly's mother disappeared, supposedly because of Spencer's research (in the Japanese version, her absence was never directly explained, although guidebooks released with the movie revealed that she had been hospitalized before the events of the film). Spencer was left to care for Molly, but because his job requires an undying commitment, she was often left under the care of the servants and housekeepers.

As a 10-year-old

She greeted Ash and his friends and challenged them to a battle. Brock volunteered to battle her so that Ash and Misty could continue on and find Delia. After Brock's defeat, she met up with Ash and Misty further ahead. After realizing Misty, who was younger than her teenage form, was a Trainer as well, she changed to a preteen and challenged Misty to a battle while Ash went ahead.

After some time, Molly received a real Pokémon, a Teddiursa. While playing with it one day, her father appeared with her mother by his side, leaving Molly overjoyed.

Molly briefly reappeared in a montage in The Rise of Darkrai, which chronicled the preceding nine movies.

Molly battled Ash, Misty, and Brock with dream Pokémon manifested by Entei. However, she was only shown with one real Pokémon, a Teddiursa.

Teddiursa
Molly Hale's Teddiursa

Molly was shown to have a Teddiursa at the end of the movie. It is unknown where and when she obtained it.

None of Teddiursa's moves are known.

Illusion Pokémon created by the Unown

Due to being Pokémon created through Molly's dreams, these Pokémon were a lot stronger than real ones, as stated by Brock.

Teddiursa was the second Pokémon Molly used in her battle against Brock. Brock started off by commenting on how such a cute Trainer had a cute Pokémon. Teddiursa started the battle by using Dynamic Punch against Brock's Vulpix, which greatly damaged it. Vulpix attacked with Quick Attack, and Teddiursa used Fury Swipes, resulting in Teddiursa's win.

Teddiursa's known moves are Dynamic Punch and Fury Swipes.

Phanpy

Phanpy was Molly's third and final Pokémon used in her battle against Brock. It made quick work of Brock's Onix with a Rollout. Phanpy's choice was a pun on Brock saying earlier that he likes to "rock and roll" his Onix being the rock, and Phanpy being the roll.

Phanpy's only known move is Rollout.

Kingdra
Molly Hale's Kingdra

Kingdra was the first Pokémon Molly used in her battle against Misty. After Molly raised the water to flood the field, she summoned her Kingdra. It started off by using Smokescreen, and then Headbutt. After Misty's Goldeen's failed Fury Attack, Kingdra won the battle.

Kingdra's known moves are Smokescreen and Headbutt.

Mantine

Mantine was Molly's second Pokémon used in her battle against Misty. Mantine attacked Misty's Staryu with a Whirlpool, trapping Staryu in a vortex. After Staryu escaped with a Rapid Spin, it charged at Staryu's Tackle with a Take Down. The rest of the battle took place off-screen, leaving the outcome unknown.

Mantine's known moves are Tackle, Bubble Beam, Whirlpool, and Take Down.

Main article: Entei (M03)

Entei was a physical manifestation created by the Unown of Molly's desires for companionship. He is an illusionary Entei that appeared to Molly after she made a wish to the Unown. He served as a replacement father for her while her real father, Spencer, was trapped in the Unown Dimension. When Ash attempted to confront Entei to get his mother back, his Totodile and Cyndaquil were rapidly defeated, with Pikachu only lasting longer without faring any better, and even Charizard — who had witnessed the incident on television at the Charicific Valley and came to help — was only able to hold Entei off without actually defeating it. However, when Entei was about to break Charizard's neck, Molly finally decided that she wanted things to be real again.

Trivia

  • Molly's Japanese name, Me (Japanese: ミー ), is partly derived from the one Takeshi Shudō had for his own daughter.[1]
    • Similarly, Shudō criticized Hideki Sonoda for including Molly's mother in the end credits for the movie for missing the entire point behind her actions, citing that were he in her shoes and he ended up still having a mother, he would not have resorted to abducting one.
