In the anime
Blaine (Japanese: カツラ Katsura) is the Gym Leader of Cinnabar Island's (later the Seafoam Islands') Gym, known officially as the Cinnabar Gym. He hands out the Volcano to Trainers who defeat him in battle. He is a highly intelligent man who specializes in Fire Pokémon.

Blaine appeared in the episodes Riddle Me This and Volcanic Panic. He was voiced by Toshiya Ueda in the Japanese version and by Michael Haigney in the English dub.
In the core series games
Blaine's title is "The Hotheaded Quiz Master." His strategy is to incinerate challengers with his rough-and-ready Fire-type Pokémon. To reach Blaine, challengers have to answer a series of quiz questions about Pokémon. Blaine only takes off his sunglasses when thinking up new quiz questions.

Blaine ran the Cinnabar Island Gym until the island started to become crowded with tourists. Instead of serious challengers, the Cinnabar Island Center started to fill up with freeloading vacationers.
When he once got lost in a treacherous, freezing mountain range, he was guided out of the mountains by a Moltres. Apparently, this is what inspired him to train Fire-type Pokémon. Blaine is a resident of Cinnabar Island, and has lived there since before the Cinnabar Lab was built. He is good friends with Mr. Fuji and used to do Pokémon research with him.

Fed up with this, Blaine closed the Gym and opened up a hotel near the island's volcanic hot springs, disguising himself with a wig and sunglasses. He also disguised his voice to be softer and lower pitched than normal. Blaine likes to make up riddles even in inappropriate situations.
In addition to the Volcano Badge, Blaine gives out 38 in Red and Blue, Red and Green, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen. In he gives out 50, and in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, his reward is 46.

When Ash, Misty, and Brock met Blaine, he told them several riddles.  Misty deciphered the riddles and eventually the trio found Blaine's hotel, and underneath the hotel in a volcanic cavern was the Cinnabar Island Gym. Ash challenged Blaine to a Gym match, and Blaine handily defeated Ash.
In Gold, and their remakes, the volcano on Cinnabar Island has erupted, destroying the town and leaving Blaine and his Pokémon homeless. Blaine relocated his Gym to a cave at the Seafoam Islands, and remains there a whole year after the volcanic eruption back on Cinnabar, planning to rebuild his Gym one day.

Later, Team Rocket attempted to steal Blaine's Magmar by freezing it with guns that projected beams of ice.  Magmar broke free in the end.  However, the sudden cooling of the walls in the lava cave caused the rock to begin to crack hinting that the Cinnabar Island volcano was going to erupt.
Blaine is able to be rematched in HeartGold and SoulSilver, after collecting his number at any time on Tuesday on Cinnabar Island. A call to him on Tuesday afternoon will arrange a rematch. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Blaine has also added Gym Trainers and a puzzle to his Gym, unlike in Generation II, where he stood alone in a small cave.

Ash, Blaine, Misty, and Brock all used their Water-, Rock-, and Fire Pokémon to dam the cracks in the walls using boulders. Ash's Squirtle and Misty's Staryu mostly cooled the Pokémon off while they were damming up the cracks. During the emergency, Ash's Charizard and Blaine's Blaine gained an interest in the other's strength, and wished to test it in battle.
In B2W2, Blaine, along with his fellow Kanto Gym Leaders, participates in the Pokémon World Tournament. He can be faced in the Kanto Leaders, World Leaders, and Type Expert Tournaments.

With the arena inside the volcano wrecked by Team Rocket, Ash and Blaine had a battle on the top crater of the volcano.   At first, Magmar and Charizard were evenly matched, but Charizard's ability to fly gave it an advantage in the end. It lifted Magmar high into the air and used Seismic Toss, slamming Magmar into a rock. The spitfire Pokémon was knocked out, and Ash won the Volcano Badge.

Blaine returns in Stadium 2 as part of the Kanto Gym Leader Castle. In this game, his strategy mainly revolves around using Sunny Day to power up his Fire-type moves and use Solar Beam more effectively. "Awesome. I've burned out... You've earned Volcano badge!"
In the anime
Main series
Original series
Ash and ashfr first met a disguised Blaine while they looked for the Cinnabar Gym in Riddle Me This. Prior to the episode, Blaine was forced to close the Cinnabar Gym after the island became a tourist destination because of its hot springs and Trainers were no longer interested. He went on to open the Big Riddle Inn to cash in on the tourist trade. After Misty solved Blaine's riddles, Ash and his friends stayed at Blaine's hotel during their time on Cinnabar Island.
Blaine alerted Ash and his friends to TRT's attack on the Pokémon Lab after he received a phone call. After the group defeated the trio, Blaine, still in disguise, revealed that he operated a Gym "in a place where no firefighter could win". Solving the riddle, the group discovered Blaine's secret Gym, located inside the Cinnabar Volcano, after Misty's Togepi accidentally jumped on one of the hot spring's tap fixtures and revealed a secret entryway.

Misty went on to solve another riddle and Blaine revealed himself to the group. Ash then challenged Blaine in a three-on-three Gym match. After Blaine's Ninetales defeated Squirtle, Ash selected Charizard, while Blaine called out his Rhydon. Rhydon emerged victorious after Charizard flew away from the battlefield to nap. Pikachu then defeated Rhydon after he used its horn to conduct a powerful Thunderbolt attack. Afterwards, Blaine selected his Blaine as his third and final Pokémon.

"I did lose this time, but I'm going to win the next time. When I rebuild my Cinnabar Gym, we'll have to have a rematch."
In Volcanic Panic, Ash forfeited the battle when Pikachu nearly fell into the Gym's boiling magma. Afterwards, Team Rocket broke into the Cinnabar Gym and attempted to steal Magmar by freezing it with ice projectile guns. Though Magmar broke free, the sudden cooling of the walls in the lava cave caused the rock to crack, triggering a volcanic eruption. Blaine, Ash, and his friends were forced to use their Water, Rock, and Fire Pokémon to block the cracks with boulders.
During the crisis, Charizard and Magmar gained an interest in each other's strength, and wished to test it in battle. Blaine agreed to a rematch with Ash, but due to the internal damage of the volcano, it was held on top of the volcanic crater. At first, Magmar and Charizard were evenly matched, but Charizard's ability to fly eventually gave it an advantage. It lifted Magmar high into the air and used Seismic Toss, slamming Magmar into the volcano and knocking it out, earning Ash the victory.

Character
Blaine likes to make up riddles and use puns even in inappropriate situations. Even so, he is a stern opponent and takes his role as Gym Leader very seriously. He values a keen challenger and makes sure they truly earn their Volcano in battle. He has crafted his battle strategy around his Gym's volcanic location, which suits his Fire Pokémon against its biggest weakness, Water Pokémon. The searing heat can also exhaust and overwhelm a challenger.
Blaine was a former member of Team Rocket, joining because of his interest in science, conducting experiments on some of Red's future Pokémon, namely Gyarados and Eevee. But after hearing of Red's clashes with Team Rocket, like protecting Mew from Team Rocket, Blaine left, attempting to make up for his evil deeds. When Red reached Cinnabar Island, Blaine was under attack by members of Team Rocket and their newly captured Moltres, on loan from Sabrina.

Blaine had his Rapidash carry Red to his Pokémon Lab, who in return let Blaine use his Gyarados to hold off Moltres, where Red was able to revive an Aerodactyl from a fossil. Aerodactyl helped rescue Blaine and defeat Moltres.

|desc=Ninetales was Blaine's first Pokémon used in his battle with Ash. Despite its beautiful looks, Ninetales proved to be an incredibly powerful Pokémon, knocking out Ash's Squirtle with a single attack. Ninetales was recalled when Ash sent out his Charizard.

Later, Blaine asked Red to help him in Cerulean Cave.  While he was working under Team Rocket, Blaine combined some of Mew's DNA with his own to create a hybrid Pokémon named Mewtwo. Some of Blaine's hand was infected with Mewtwo's DNA, and thus he was able to track the synthetic Pokémon. Because of this, Team Rocket attempted to abduct Blaine to review Mewtwo's whereabouts. Using the Master Ball, Red was able to capture Mewtwo for Blaine.
Ninetales's only known move is Fire Spin.}}

The psychic bond between Mewtwo and Blaine limited them both. If they were apart for too long, both would begin to become ill. Blaine worked for several years trying to find a way to sever the bond without hurting either of them.

Blaine doubted the Electric could defeat Rhydon, but Ash encouraged Pikachu to use Rhydon's horn as a conductor of electricity that quickly caused its defeat.

During the Cerise Island incident, Sabrina's Spoons of Destiny paired Blaine and Yellow together in the fight against the Elite Four.  Together, they confronted Lance.  However, the bond between Mewtwo and Blaine proved to be their undoing, and they were defeated, leaving Yellow to face Lance alone.
Rhydon's known moves are Horn Drill and Fury Attack.}}

Later, during the Mask of Ice's plot in Johto, Entei chose Blaine to be its partner. The healing power of Entei's flames was finally able to cut the link between Mewtwo and Blaine, and the two were free to live their lives apart from each other.

This was done in Ash's rematch with Blaine on top of Cinnabar's volcano. However, despite Magmar's powerful attacks including Fire Blast, Charizard managed to come out on top.}}

Although he's serious for most situations, he also had his comical moments like getting his moustache burnt when he was training and had to use fake ones. Sometimes he may also use riddles to lighten up dark atmosphere.

Aside from being a Gym Leader, Blaine also works as a Pokémon ecologist.

Red, Green & Blue
Blaine debuted in Tauros the Tyrant. He was first seen discussing the creation of Mewtwo with Ken at the Team Rocket Hideout. When Blaine noted the genetic material Team Rocket acquired from Mew's cells wouldn't be enough to fully complete Mewtwo's body, Ken suggested they attempt to capture Mew to obtain more.

In Holy Moltres, Red arrived on Cinnabar Island, where he found several Team Rocket Grunts attacking Blaine. With Red's help, Blaine escaped his pursuers, only for the Grunts to send a Legendary birds (Adventures) after them. Choosing to stay behind and keep Moltres busy, Blaine had his Rapidash take Red to his secret laboratory, where he used a machine to revive his Old Amber into a living Aerodactyl. With his new team member, Aero, Red managed to wound Moltres, forcing the Grunts to recall it and flee.

In And Mewtwo Too?!, Blaine found Red in battle with Mewtwo in front of Cerulean Cave. After rescuing him from one of Mewtwo's attacks, Blaine revealed that he managed to complete Mewtwo's body by adding some of his human cells into it. Some of Mewtwo's cells also entered Blaine's body as well, linking the two and giving Blaine the ability to track Mewtwo's whereabouts at the cost of slowly taking his life. Red used the Master Ball he borrowed from Blaine to catch Mewtwo, defeating it. Afterward, Blaine apologized for Mewtwo's violent behavior, stating it was born from only being exposed to cruelty of humans. Red suggested Blaine atone by showing Mewtwo compassion as a way of helping it change for the better.

Yellow
In Purrrr-sian, Blaine received a call from Erika, who asked that he come help her and Yellow battle Miles, a Super Nerd that had disguised himself as Red, who had gone missing. Along with Brock and Misty, Blaine traveled to Celadon City, where they and Erika cornered Miles, preventing him from escaping and giving Yellow the opportunity to knock Miles unconscious. Afterward, Blaine apologized to Misty for the crimes he committed on her Pokémon during his time in Team Rocket. With his Growlithe, Blaine detected some of Red's scent on Miles's body and found out his last known location was on Mt. Moon.

In Putting It on the Line...Against Arcanine, Yellow made it to Cinnabar Island. She found Camper Evan helping Blaine train together with Mewtwo. Blaine later received a call from Brock, who had gone to Mt. Moon to search for Red, only to find a broken shell of ice in the shape of Red's body. Their call was interrupted by Misty, who informed everyone that an army of the Elite Four's Pokémon had begun attacking various cities around Kanto. Blaine revealed that after some investigating, he discovered the Elite Four's base of operations was on Cerise Island. He sent Yellow to the island first, noting that it'd be more advantageous to enter the island from different directions. Later, after arriving on the island, Blaine encountered Blue as well as his former Team Rocket allies: Lt. Surge, Koga, and Sabrina.

In Allied by Alakazam!, Yellow, Green, and Bill arrived on the island and joined the others. The evil Gym Leaders revealed they came to defeat the Elite Four and suggested everyone work together to take down their common foe. With her Spoons of Destiny, Sabrina split everyone into four groups of two that would face one Elite Four member each. Blaine and Yellow were partnered together against Lance.

In Airing Out Aerodactyl, Lance revealed himself to Blaine and Yellow. Hoping to measure Lance's strength, Blaine stepped up to battle him alone. With Mewtwo's Psywave constructs, Blaine shattered the Ultra Balls on Lance's belt, hoping to prevent him from using his other Pokémon. Left exhausted from battling with Mewtwo for too long, Blaine passed out. His and Mewtwo's efforts were in vain, as Lance'a remaining Pokémon were already out of their Poké Balls and ready to fight. Mewtwo tried to keep battling, but retreated back into its Ball to ensure Blaine's safety.

In The Legend, after the Elite Four were defeated, Blaine returned to the Kanto mainland with Yellow and the others. He and the other good Gym Leaders worked together to repair the damages caused by the Elite Four's army.

Gold, Silver & Crystal
In Yikes, It's Yanma!, the Kanto and Johto Gym Leaders gathered at the Indigo Plateau. They took part in an exhibition tournament for the Pokémon League's opening ceremonies. Blaine was paired up against Clair in the seventh round.

In Entranced by Entei, Blaine was approached by Legendary beasts (Adventures), who had been searching for someone to command it in battle. Blaine agreed on the condition that Entei used its special flames on him. With its Flames of Life, Entei burned the Mewtwo cells in Blaine's body away, curing him of his life-threatening disease. Sensing their connection was severed, Mewtwo left Cinnabar and flew off to parts unknown. Blaine's match with Clair was postponed while he recovered from the effects of Entei's healing.

In Lugia and Ho-Oh on the Loose, Part 1, the Masked Man launched an attack on the Pokémon League. The Gym Leaders all teamed up to battle the Masked Man's army of Grunts. The battle led everyone onboard the Magnet Train, which was a diversion to transport the Gym Leaders away from the stadium. Clair realized the Grunts were under mind control and blamed Blaine, noting his frequent absences as evidence. She used the opportunity to have her exhibition match with Blaine. Clair tried interrogating Blaine on the whereabouts of Lance, who went missing after the battle on Cerise Island. With Entei's power, Blaine easily fended off Clair's attacks and defeated her. He then reassured Clair, stating his belief that Lance is still alive somewhere.

In The Last Battle III, Blaine, Misty, and Lt. Surge teamed up to confront the Masked Man. By combining Entei, Legendary beasts (Adventures), and Legendary beasts (Adventures)'s strength, they overpowered the Masked Man's Tower duo (Adventures) and Tower duo (Adventures) before having Suicune trap the man himself between its Crystal Wall. Revealing his body to be fake, the Masked Man broke free and knocked Suicune unconscious, leaving Misty stuck inside the Crystal Wall. Misty was later freed by Eusine, but she, Blaine, and Lt. Surge were left too injured to continue battling, forcing the Suicune, Entei, and Raikou to chase after the Masked Man.

In The Last Battle XIV, after the Masked Man's defeat, Blaine resumed his duties as Gym Leader. As Blaine won his battle with Clair, the Kanto Gym Leaders were declared the victors of the exhibition tournament.

FireRed & LeafGreen
In Double Down Deoxys, Blaine was visited by Evan and Miles. He noted the scars created from his separation from Mewtwo have begun aching. Blaine speculated it was due to Mewtwo sensing that Mew may be returning to Kanto.

X & Y
In Pinsir Glares, Blaine was revealed to have gone to the Kalos region, where he studied under and received a Key Stone from Gurkinn. He later reunited with and re-caught Mewtwo at the Pokémon Village. One day, while getting food in a nearby town, Blaine was sent flying by the ultimate weapon's blast. The Battle Chatelaine sisters found Blaine's unconscious body and took him to the Battle Maison to recover from his injuries. After some time passed, Blaine left for the Pokémon Village, which had been infiltrated by Team Flare.

In Yveltal Steals, Blaine arrived at the village, where he helped Mewtwo battle Lysandre by Mega Evolving it. Blaine and Mewtwo's bond gave Mewtwo the unique ability to Mega Evolve more than once per battle, allowing it to switch between its X and Y forms when needed. This bond also meant Mewtwo received any damage dealt to Blaine, a weakness Lysandre exploited by having Zygarde attack the surrounding area with Land's Wrath. With Key Stones borrowed from his allies, X simultaneously Mega Evolved his five capable Pokémon and used them against Zygarde. Lysandre retaliated with his own Pokémon, only for them to be taken out by Mewtwo and Blue's Blue. After Lysandre was defeated, Blaine checked the man's wounds, confirming he was still alive but suffered heavy damage to his spinal area

In Floette Returns, Blaine and Blue talked to Professor Sycamore about the final battle with Team Flare. They noted being watched by a small green creature that appeared after Zygarde's defeat. Sycamore dubbed the creature a Zygarde Cell and noted similar creatures being seen in the Alola region and sent his assistants, Sina and Dexio, to investigate.

Character
Although Blaine is serious for most situations, he also had his comical moments. Blaine had his mustache burnt when he was training and had to use fake ones. Sometimes, he may also use riddles to lighten up the dark atmosphere.

After it was fully cultivated in the Rocket Hideout, it went berserk and demolished the place before settling in the Cerulean Cave (where it wreaked havoc in the northwestern sector of Cerulean City). Eventually, Red caught word of it and reached the cave out of curiosity before nearly being killed in its Psywave. Blaine made a valiant attempt to kill it at all costs, knowing that if he, the only one with the ability to function as a "Mewtwo Radar" was defeated, the world could come to an end. Although this succeeded in eliminating its tornado, the mutant itself still survived, only to be caught with a Master Ball that was thrown by Red in an ingenious maneuver. Mewtwo then went on to be a trained Pokémon belonging to Blaine and fought against Lance in the Yellow, though Blaine's failing health held it back from winning. After it was released a year later, it partnered up with Red much later on to free Deoxys from Giovanni's hands.
Blaine appeared in PZ08, meeting Satoshi at Seafoam Islands while chasing after Articuno. At his Gym on Cinnabar Island, he told Satoshi how he had been enamored by Articuno for years, but had never succeeded in catching it, and was starting to feel his increasing age was making the task more and more difficult over time. When Satoshi offered to help him, Blaine asked him to prove his strength to him first. Once Satoshi had defeated Blaine and earned the Volcano, they headed back to Seafoam Islands. Since Articuno didn't see him as a threat yet, unlike Blaine, Satoshi approached it first and used his Jigglypuff to put it to sleep, allowing Blaine to come in and finally capture the Legendary Pokémon he had admired for so long.

Trivia
Trivia
* Although Magmar appears as Blaine's signature Pokémon in the games, he only has one in Generation II.
* Although Magmar appears as Blaine's signature Pokémon in the anime, he only has one in Generations II, IV, and VII, with it not even appearing in his Gym team in Yellow. This is due to Yellow already being in late development by the time of Blaine's anime debut.
* In , he is one of two Gym Leaders who in the rematches does not have any items on any of their Pokémon (the other being Jasmine).
* In , a rare glitch can occur, where he will use a Super Potion on Pokémon he just sent out despite them being at full health.
* Despite the Arcanine evolutionary line being his signature Pokémon in Generations I and III, Arcanine is no longer in his party in Generation II and its remakes.
* Even when the player battles Blaine in a rematch, he still references his "Cave Gym" as if the battle's taking place there.
* Blaine is the only Gym Leader to have a Gym in two different locations.
* In Generation III, most Kanto Gym Leaders who share a specialty type with a Hoenn Gym Leader give out the same prize TM as the Hoenn counterpart. Blaine is the exception, rewarding 38 instead of 50, as Flannery does. He does reward TM50 in Generation IV, however.
* Blaine’s new design and cane in HeartGold and SoulSilver may be a reference to Riddler, particularly the hat, cane and Blaine’s gym revolving around riddles.
* Blaine’s portrait in Pokémon Stadium is the only one to not use his headshot from Red and Green promotional material. Instead, it uses his headshot from the manual of the Japanese version of Red and Green.

Blaine has two separate character designs. The first one is from early Sugimori artwork for Pokémon Red and Green Versions. He is depicted as a slightly balding man with light red hair with no mustache and no sunglasses wearing beach clothes. The old design was reused in Pokémon anime (as Blaine's real look) and in Pokémon Special manga (as a disguise).
Blaine has two separate character designs. The first one is from early Sugimori artwork for Pokémon Red and Green Versions seen in concept artwork and the Japanese manual. In this design, Blaine dons a damaged military uniform worn, which resembles the Imperial Japan-era 98 Shiki-Gun-i. He is depicted as a balding man with light red hair to the back and side of his head. Furthermore, he lacks a moustache, and bears a more gaunt, albeit serious, facial expression. This more archaic design was reused in the anime (as Blaine's real look) and very briefly in the Pokémon Adventures manga as a disguise after his moustache was burned. Additionally, an unused sprite for this design would be seen in the SpaceWorld 1999 demo of Pokémon Gold and Silver, being used as a placeholder for the female Rocket Executive's sprite.

Later, in Pokémon Blue and outside-Japan Pokémon Red and Blue Versions the artwork was revised and he started to be depicted as an older man with a mustache, and no hair on his scalp, wearing sunglasses and lab coat. This design was originally used for the Silph Chief. Despite the artwork changes, his new design was used in all Generation I main series games, including the Pokémon Red and Green Versions. This means that Blaine's design was probably changed very late in the production of Red and Green, since his official artwork and his in-game sprite are completely different portrayals. However, his Red and Green overworld sprite still shows him without glasses, while later in the Yellow Version, his glasses are clearly visible.

Later, in Pokémon Blue and outside-Japan Pokémon Red and Blue Versions the artwork was revised and he started to be depicted as an older, completely bald man with a mustache, wearing sunglasses and labcoat. He was depicted like that in Pokémon Blue and all later games (except anime-based Pokémon Puzzle League), Pokémon Trading Card Game and in Pokémon Special manga (not disguised).
The reasons for changing the design is unknown; however, the Fame Checker in FireRed and LeafGreen explains why he doesn't always wear sunglasses: "Blaine is said to remove his dark shades only when he is thinking up new quiz questions."

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Blaine is shown wearing a hat. He wears more sophisticated clothing than his previous lab coat. He also sports a cane that resembles a question mark.

Blaine (Japanese: カツラ Katsura) is the Gym Leader of Cinnabar Island's (later the Seafoam Islands') Gym, known officially as the Cinnabar Gym. He hands out the Volcano Badge to Trainers who defeat him in battle. He is a highly intelligent man who specializes in Fire-type Pokémon.

In addition to the Volcano Badge, Blaine gives out TM38 (Fire Blast) in Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen. In HeartGold and SoulSilver he gives out TM50 (Overheat), and in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, his reward is TM46 (Fire Blast).

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, and their remakes, the volcano on Cinnabar Island has erupted, destroying the town and leaving Blaine and his Pokémon homeless. Blaine relocated his Gym to a cave at the Seafoam Islands, and remains there a whole year after the volcanic eruption back on Cinnabar, planning to rebuild his Gym one day.

In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Blaine, along with his fellow Kanto Gym Leaders, participates in the Pokémon World Tournament. He can be faced in the Kanto Leaders, World Leaders, and Type Expert Tournaments.

Blaine in the anime

Original series

Ash and his friends first met a disguised Blaine while they looked for the Cinnabar Gym in Riddle Me This.

Blaine alerted Ash and his friends to Team Rocket's attack on the Pokémon Lab after he received a phone call.

Blaine in his disguise

Misty went on to solve another riddle and Blaine revealed himself to the group. Ash then challenged Blaine in a three-on-three Gym match. After Blaine's Ninetales defeated Squirtle, Ash selected Charizard, while Blaine called out his Rhydon. Rhydon emerged victorious after Charizard flew away from the battlefield to nap. Pikachu then defeated Rhydon after he used its horn to conduct a powerful Thunderbolt attack. Afterwards, Blaine selected his Magmar as his third and final Pokémon.

Blaine, Ash, and his friends were forced to use their Water, Rock, and Fire-type Pokémon to block the cracks with boulders.

He values a keen challenger and makes sure they truly earn their Volcano Badge in battle. He has crafted his battle strategy around his Gym's volcanic location, which suits his Fire Pokémon against its biggest weakness, Water Pokémon. The searing heat can also exhaust and overwhelm a challenger.

Pokémon

This listing is of Blaine's known Pokémon in the anime:

Ninetales
Blaine's Ninetales
Debut Riddle Me This
Voice actors
Japanese Shin-ichiro Miki
English Rachael Lillis

Ninetales was Blaine's first Pokémon used in his battle with Ash. Despite its beautiful looks, Ninetales proved to be an incredibly powerful Pokémon, knocking out Ash's Squirtle with a single attack. Ninetales was recalled when Ash sent out his Charizard.

Ninetales's only known move is Fire Spin.

Rhydon
Blaine's Rhydon
Debut Riddle Me This
Voice actors
Japanese Katsuyuki Konishi
English Katsuyuki Konishi

After Ash chose Charizard in his battle, Blaine countered it by choosing Rhydon. Charizard refused to fight the Ground-type Pokémon, so Rhydon went up against Pikachu in its place. Blaine doubted the Electric-type could defeat Rhydon, but Ash encouraged Pikachu to use Rhydon's horn as a conductor of electricity that quickly caused its defeat.

Rhydon's known moves are Horn Drill and Fury Attack.

Magmar
Blaine's Magmar
Debut Riddle Me This
Voice actors
Japanese Katsuyuki Konishi
English Eric Stuart (EP058-EP059)
Main article: Blaine's Magmar

Magmar is Blaine's final Pokémon and his powerhouse. In the first battle, Magmar easily defeated Ash's Pikachu. After the battlefield was wrecked because of Team Rocket's icy attack, Magmar and Ash's Charizard ended up gaining a respect for each other and wanted to test their strengths against one another. This was done in Ash's rematch with Blaine on top of Cinnabar's volcano. However, despite Magmar's powerful attacks including Fire Blast, Charizard managed to come out on top.

Pokémon Adventures

Aside from being a Gym Leader, Blaine also works as a Pokémon ecologist.

Red, Green & Blue arc

Blaine debuted in Tauros the Tyrant. He was first seen discussing the creation of Mewtwo with Ken at the Team Rocket Hideout. When Blaine noted the genetic material Team Rocket acquired from Mew's cells wouldn't be enough to fully complete Mewtwo's body, Ken suggested they attempt to capture Mew to obtain more.

In Holy Moltres, Red arrived on Cinnabar Island, where he found several Team Rocket Grunts attacking Blaine. With Red's help, Blaine escaped his pursuers, only for the Grunts to send a Moltres after them.

Yellow arc

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

In Yikes, It's Yanma!, the Kanto and Johto Gym Leaders gathered at the Indigo Plateau. They took part in an exhibition tournament for the Pokémon League's opening ceremonies. Blaine was paired up against Clair in the seventh round.

In Entranced by Entei, Blaine was approached by Entei, who had been searching for someone to command it in battle.

By combining Entei, Suicune, and Raikou's strength, they overpowered the Masked Man's Ho-Oh and Lugia before having Suicune trap the man himself between its Crystal Wall.

FireRed & LeafGreen arc
Blaine in the twelfth chapter

In Double Down Deoxys, Blaine was visited by Evan and Miles. He noted the scars created from his separation from Mewtwo have begun aching. Blaine speculated it was due to Mewtwo sensing that Mew may be returning to Kanto.

X & Y arc

Lysandre retaliated with his own Pokémon, only for them to be taken out by Mewtwo and Blue's Charizard.

Main article: Mewtwo (Adventures)

Mewtwo was created by Blaine in a Team Rocket hideout using a small sample of Mew's DNA and Blaine's own. After it was fully cultivated in the Rocket Hideout, it went berserk and demolished the place before settling in the Cerulean Cave (where it wreaked havoc in the northwestern sector of Cerulean City). Eventually, Red caught word of it and reached the cave out of curiosity before nearly being killed in its psychic tornado. Mewtwo then went on to be a trained Pokémon belonging to Blaine and fought against Lance in the Yellow arc, though Blaine's failing health held it back from winning. After it was released a year later, it partnered up with Red much later on to free Deoxys from Giovanni's hands. In the X & Y arc, Blaine was revealed to have reunited with and re-caught Mewtwo.

Growlithe
Blaine's Growlithe

Growlithe is Blaine's Pokémon that was usually seen in searches. He first used him to find the cloth of Super Nerd Miles after he got possessed by a Gastly.

Once Satoshi had defeated Blaine and earned the Volcano Badge, they headed back to Seafoam Islands. Since Articuno didn't see him as a threat yet, unlike Blaine, Satoshi approached it first and used his Jigglypuff to put it to sleep, allowing Blaine to come in and finally capture the Legendary Pokémon he had admired for so long.

Trivia

 • Although Magmar appears as Blaine's signature Pokémon in the anime, he only has one in Generations II, IV, and VII, with it not even appearing in his Gym team in Pokémon Yellow. This is due to Yellow already being in late development by the time of Blaine's anime debut.
 • In HeartGold and SoulSilver, he is one of two Gym Leaders who in the rematches does not have any items on any of their Pokémon (the other being Jasmine).
 • In Red and Blue, a rare glitch can occur, where he will use a Super Potion on Pokémon he just sent out despite them being at full health.
 • Despite the Arcanine evolutionary line being his signature Pokémon in Generations I and III, Arcanine is no longer in his party in Generation II and its remakes.
 • Even when the player battles Blaine in a rematch, he still references his "Cave Gym" as if the battle's taking place there.
 • Blaine is the only Gym Leader to have a Gym in two different locations.
 • In Generation III, most Kanto Gym Leaders who share a specialty type with a Hoenn Gym Leader give out the same prize TM as the Hoenn counterpart. Blaine is the exception, rewarding TM38 (Fire Blast) instead of TM50 (Overheat), as Flannery does. He does reward TM50 in Generation IV, however.
 • Blaine’s new design and cane in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver may be a reference to The Riddler, particularly the hat, cane and Blaine’s gym revolving around riddles.
 • Blaine’s portrait in Pokémon Stadium is the only one to not use his headshot from Pokémon Red and Green promotional material. Instead, it uses his headshot from the manual of the Japanese version of Red and Green.

Design differences

Blaine's anime disguise

Blaine has two separate character designs. The first one is from early Sugimori artwork for Pokémon Red and Green Versions seen in concept artwork[3] and the Japanese manual. Additionally, an unused sprite for this design would be seen in the SpaceWorld 1999 demo of Pokémon Gold and Silver, being used as a placeholder for the female Rocket Executive's sprite.[4]

The reasons for changing the design is unknown; however, the Fame Checker in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen explains why he doesn't always wear sunglasses: "Blaine is said to remove his dark shades only when he is thinking up new quiz questions."

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Blaine is shown wearing a hat. He wears more sophisticated clothing than his previous lab coat. He also sports a cane that resembles a question mark.
