Koko (Japanese: ココ Koko) is a major character who appeared in Secrets of the Jungle. Raised by Pokémon, he is a human boy who believes he too is a Pokémon.
In the anime
Koko's real name is Al Molybdenum (Japanese: アル・モリブデン Al Molybden). He is the only child of scientists Chrom and Phossa Molybdenum, who were the leaders of the Biotope Company, working with their subordinate Dr. Zed. When they learned of the Great Tree's location in the Forest of Okoya and that the many Zarude living in the forest worshipped it, they decided to protect it from Dr. Zed, who wanted to destroy it in order to gain access to the secrets of the Healing Springs. Infuriated by this revelation, Dr. Zed chased the family down as they tried to escape in their car. He soon ran them off the road and into a riverbank. Stealing the data, Dr. Zed left the family to die in the ensuing explosion, but Al survived as he had drifted away from the car down the river.
Al was eventually found by a single Zarude living deep within the jungle. This Zarude attempted to return Al to his parents, however an attempt to leave him in Milyfa Town led to Al nearly walking in front of a car. Zarude decided to investigate a nearby lab and upon seeing its wrecked state and a photo of Al with his parents realized that the baby was now an orphan. Zarude decided to raise Al as a son and renamed him Koko. Knowing that this was against the rules of its troop, Zarude decided to leave the other Zarude behind so it could raise Koko safely, as they objected to a human being brought to their sacred tree. This Zarude, who took to wearing a torn piece of pink clothing, would become known as "Dada" to Koko.
Over the next ten years, Zarude raised Koko in the depths of the jungle, and the two developed a strong bond. As he had no memory of his human life, Koko believed he was also a Pokémon and was frustrated by the fact that he was seemingly unable to use moves. Zarude didn't want to tell Koko the truth of his origins. However Koko began to question about his origins. When Zarude hesitated to give Koko the answer he asked for, Koko stormed off to discover his true origins. However, Koko fell into a river where he was saved by Ash Ketchum. Following his recovery, Koko found himself in the human world where he noticed that Ash and his fellow humans were identical to to himself. Koko soon realized that he was one of them. Koko befriended Ash and the latter subsequently teached the former what it means to be human.
After Koko introduced his father to Ash, Zarude confronted Koko for speaking the human language and bringing a fellow human. However, Koko said that Zarude was ignoring the fact that he is also a human and called Dada out on this. Guilty, Zarude confessed to Koko that the latter wasn't a Zarude nor the begat of the former. Zarude took Koko, Ash, Pikachu, and their friend Skwovet to the abandoned lab where he explained Koko's past and showed them the picture of Koko's real parents.
