Bede (Japanese: ビート Beet) is one of the rival characters in Pokémon Sword and Shield, the others being Hop and Marnie. He initially specializes in Psychic-type Pokémon, but is eventually scouted by Opal to succeed her as a Fairy-type Gym Leader, and thus changes his specialty type accordingly. As the Gym Leader of Ballonlea Stadium, he gives the Fairy Badge to Trainers who defeat him.

In the core series games

Bede is one of the player's rivals. He is an arrogant, rude young man who had been personally sponsored by Rose, who gave Bede his first Pokémon, later revealed to be his Hatterene, upon visiting his orphanage when he was a child. The player and Hop first meet him when signing up for the Gym Challenge, though his name is not revealed at the time. While he is competing in the Gym Challenge to become Champion, he has been gathering Wishing Stars in large quantities to help the Chairman realize his ambition. However, in his zealous pursuit of Wishing Stars, Bede brings harm to a historic landmark in Stow-on-Side, and he is disowned by Rose and disqualified from the Gym Challenge.

After the player returns from Ballonlea to Hammerlocke with the Fairy Badge, Opal notices the sulking Bede and is struck with inspiration, asking him to become her successor. Bede reluctantly agrees, believing he will become stronger in the process. Bede eventually returns as a Gym Leader, interrupting the finals of the Champion Cup and demanding to battle the player, staking his career on his victory. After losing, Bede, who had begun to regret accepting Opal's offer, reveals he was planning on using the result of the battle as an excuse to get away from his mentor. However, after hearing the crowd cheer him on despite his loss, he feels obligated to continue training, figuring he will be able to completely surpass Opal soon.

After the player becomes Champion, the player, Hop, and former Gym Leader Piers head to Ballonlea Stadium while trying to stop Sordward and Shielbert, but in the lobby, Bede confidently declares that he has taken care of the Dynamax Pokémon running rampant in his Stadium already. The player's group attempts to leave but Bede refuses to let them go until he has a battle with the new Champion. After some assurance from Opal, the group decides to indulge Bede. During the battle, Bede acknowledges the player's strength, and after being defeated, accepts them as Champion. A more humble Trainer now, Bede swears he'll overcome his weakness and, in his words, "reach the pinnacle of what Fairy types can do."

League Cards

This is a transcript of the back of Bede's League Cards in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Normal League Card
"Bede spent some time living in an orphanage after his family ran into some trouble when he was young. He always had difficulty getting along with others and would constantly get into fights. That is until one day Rose visited the facility. Rose gave Bede a Pokémon, which changed Bede's life forever. He showed talent as a Trainer and threw himself into Pokémon battles, becoming stronger by the day. He has joined the Gym Challenge with an endorsement from the chairman himself, and Bede plans to prove that the chairman's faith was not misplaced."
Rare League Card
"He was appointed by the former Gym Leader Opal to become the new Gym Leader of Ballonlea Stadium. The general consensus is that Opal's harsh training has in fact mellowed him out. Though he himself has never confirmed nor denied this, it should be noted that he no longer refuses to give autographs. Additionally, it seems his skills as a Pokémon Trainer have also increased rather dramatically. Recently, his intrusion during the Finals of the Champion Cup has gained popularity, and fans wish to see that kind of performance again. Bede himself is not sure how to react."

Pokémon Adventures

Bede debuted in Watch Out!! Strong Rivals. He was first seen in front of the Galar Mine, unable to enter due to a large boulder blocking the entrance. Casey, Hop, and Marnie combined their Pokémon's attacks to move the boulder. After the others went inside, Henry pointed out that Bede was protecting the boulder and speculated his goal was to obtain Wishing Stars found inside the mine. Later, everyone gathered at Turffield Stadium, where they each fought a Gym battle against Milo and won.

In Blazing!! Bede's Feelings, Bede learned that Rose had dinner with Henry in Hulbury, infuriating him. Wanting to have Henry retire from the Gym Challenge, Bede challenged him to a battle but lost. Despite this, Bede revealed the reason he was collecting Wishing Stars was to help Rose.

Bede after training with Opal

In Teary!! The Voice of the Master, Stow-on-Side, Bede watched Henry's Gym battle against Allister, but felt the former's performance was lacking and quickly left. Afterward, he used Rose's Copperajah to try and destroy the Stow-on-Side mural, but was found by Casey, Marvin, Professor Magnolia, and Allister. Bede was then caught by several League Staff at the request of Rose, who reprimanded Bede for damaging an important piece of Galar's history. As punishment for his actions, Bede was disqualified from the Gym Challenge.

In Rising!! Opal of Ballonlea, in Hammerlocke, Bede finished his forced withdrawal from the Gym Challenge. He was given a letter from Ballonlea Gym Leader, Opal, but crushed it in his hands without reading it. He was then alerted to a loud rumbling and wondered if it came from the Hammerlocke Energy Plant. At the plant, Bede met Sonia and witnessed Leon trying to enter the building only to be turned away by the League Staff. Worried for Rose's safety, Bede attempted to break in, but was warned by Raihan that his behavior would potentially lower Rose's opinion of him even further should everything be fine.

In PASS20, Bede accepted Opal's invitation and visited her at the Ballonlea Stadium. Opal, having taken a liking to Bede's personality, accepted him as a successor for her title of Gym Leader. He subsequently started undertaking the training necessary to be ready for this position at the Gym.

In PASS25, the Galar Gym Leaders agreed to gather at Rose Tower to find out whether or not Rose intended on bringing harm to the region. Bede and Opal arrived first, but were stopped by Oleana. While Oleana kept the Gym Leaders busy, Bede, Henry, Casey, Hop, and Marnie headed up the elevator to meet with Rose, only to learn he wasn't in the building. Appearing on a video screen, Rose revealed that he would be restarting the Darkest Day in order to ensure Galar has a future. Power Spot lights then began appearing all over Galar, causing Pokémon to begin Dynamaxing at random. While some went back to their hometowns to help deal with the rampaging Dynamax Pokémon, Bede traveled with the others to the Hammerlocke Energy Plant, where they were joined by Leon's group. Upon entering the building, everyone found Rose ecstatic that his plan was a success.

In PASS27, Rose explained he meant no harm to Galar and sent Sordward and Shielbert to defeat Eternatus and prevent the Darkest Day from spiraling out of control. Despite their claims of being descendants of the heroes that once stopped the Darkest Day, Sordward and Shielbert were unable to win, forcing Rose to take their place. Oleana explained that Rose's actions were for the benefit of Galar and requested that everyone help stop Eternatus. The group agreed and made their way to the summit, only to find Rose had already been defeated. Bede kept Rose safe while the others faced Eternatus. They managed to take Eternatus down, but it got back up, changed into its Eternamax form, and quickly overwhelmed them. Zacian and Zamazenta arrived to save everyone, but when they tried using the Rusted Sword and Shield, Eternatus grabbed them as well as Henry.

In PASS30, Zacian and Zamazenta struck Eternatus with a double Giga Impact, causing a massive explosion of energy and light. Once the light cleared, Henry, Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus had all vanished. Casey and Marvin reviewed footage of the incident and discovered something teleporting Henry away just as Zacian, Zamazenta, and Eternatus clashed. By tracking samples of Eternatus's poison on Henry's body and the material of the rusted artifacts, Casey found matching signals on both the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra. With no idea where Henry ended up, Oleana sent Bede, Casey, Marvin, Hop, and Marnie to both locations.

While on a train heading to the Crown Tundra, Bede, Marnie, and Hop encountered Peonia. The girl begged Bede and the others to hide her from her overbearing father, Peony. They agreed, but upon noticing Peony's resemblance to Rose, Bede's dedication to the chairman led him to exposing Peonia. At the station, Marnie challenged Peony to a battle with Peonia's freedom on the line. After a tough battle, Marnie won after her Morgrem evolved into Grimmsnarl giving it the strength to defeat Peony's Copperajah.
