Mr. Briney (Japanese: ハギ老人 Old Man Hagi) is a skilled sailor who appears in many forms of the media. He has a Wingull named Peeko.

In the core series games

Mr. Briney at Dewford Town

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, Mr. Briney is first seen near Rusturf Tunnel, while in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, he is first seen in front of his cottage by the sea on Route 104 before next being seen by Rusturf Tunnel.

Outside of Rusturf Tunnel, he will ask the player to recover his Wingull, nicknamed Peeko, from a Team Magma GruntROR/Team Aqua GruntSEAS who has kidnapped it. Once Peeko is rescued and returned to Mr. Briney, he will offer to ferry the player in his boat among Petalburg City and Dewford Town, as well as Slateport City (but only after the Letter to Steven is delivered) until they gain the Balance Badge from their father, after which he promptly disappears from all three areas. After the player earns the Mind Badge, Mr. Briney makes a visit to Stern's Shipyard.

During the post-game, it is revealed that he has become the captain of the S.S. Tidal. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, he is seen meeting his old friend Drake during the player's first cruise on the ship.

In Pokémon Emerald only, when the player goes to the Lilycove City harbor after receiving the Old Sea Map, a Sailor will say that the Faraway Island is very far away, and that he cannot help. However, Mr. Briney will reward the player for all the help provided by travelling to the island.

He is an old friend of Mr. Stone as they, along with Drake, used to travel the world together in their youth.

In Pokémon X and Y, a painting titled Mr. Briney's Compassion featuring Mr. Briney and Peeko is displayed in the Lumiose Museum. This artwork comes from EX Dragon expansion in the TCG.

Audio guide: This painting depicts an old man who keeps a flying Pokémon close at hand.
Incidentally, the man's name is Mr. Briney, and the Wingull's name is Peeko.

Mr. Briney in the anime
Mr. Briney in his youth

Mr. Briney is an avid sailor, who claims to have sailed the seven seas. He met Peeko during his retirement years, and his new friend inspired him to construct the S.S. Wingull vessel and set off for another around the world trip.

Mr. Briney debuted in On a Wingull and a Prayer!, where he was first seen fishing off a Rustboro pier. May approached him as she tried to find someone who could take her and her friends to Dewford Island. Mr. Briney offered to escort the group there after seeing Peeko take a liking to May, namely because she had a handful of Pokémon food.

While May left to inform the group that they now had a ride, Mr. Briney was confronted by a Team Aqua Grunt, the same one responsible for stealing from the Devon Corporation the previous day. The grunt captured Peeko in a cage, and he used her as a bargaining chip to get Mr. Briney to hand over his boat. With no other choice Mr. Briney complied with the grunt's demands. The pair were about to hop aboard, but the group's interference prevented them from doing so. Despite the group's arrival, the grunt still took Mr. Briney's vessel with Peeko still held captive. Luckily, Mr. Briney had another boat, the S.S. Wingull, which was hidden in his boat shed. Together with the group, Mr. Briney steered the S.S. Wingull into the path of the stolen vessel, causing it to become airborne and hit the water. While the Team Aqua grunt still escaped to his comrades in a waiting submarine, Mr. Briney was glad to be reunited with Peeko again. Afterwards, Mr. Briney followed through on his promise to May and they left bound for Dewford Island the next morning.

In Sharpedo Attack!, Mr. Briney was still taking the group to Dewford Town. On the way, they took a break on an unnamed island, which Mr. Briney found during one of his many ship voyages. While there, a group of Sharpedo arrived. Mr. Briney rescued May and Max from them with the help of Peeko. The group were able to bypass them to reach the island's shores. However, the Sharpedo had returned the following day and were preventing the group from leaving the shoal bay. After Brock helped the lead Sharpedo recover from its poisoning, the others all calmed down allowing Briney and the kids to continue towards Dewford. Later, Mr. Briney dropped the group off on Dewford Island and he set off towards Slateport City.

In Best Wishes Until We Meet Again!, Cilan mentioned that he was heading to Johto to compete in the Old Rod Fishing Rally, which was being hosted by Mr. Briney.

Character

Mr. Briney is an affable man with plenty of seafaring stories to tell. He is a resourceful individual, as shown in both of his appearances. In Sharpedo Attack!, his knowledge of Sharpedo helped the group put a trap fence plan into action in their attempt to escape an island. Even in his retirement he continues to sail the ocean, with his friend Peeko always by his side.

History

Ruby & Sapphire arc

Mr. Briney is first seen rescuing Ruby from drowning after an earthquake caused him to fall offshore into the ocean. Mr. Briney reveals to Ruby that he dreams of capturing a Relicanth so that he could explore deeper parts of the ocean. Although Ruby found Relicanth's appearance unpleasant, Mr. Briney showed him a picture of a Milotic to convince the boy that not all fish Pokémon were ugly.

As they travel, Mr. Briney accidentally fishes up a wild Crawdaunt. Mr. Briney attempt to battle Crawdaunt with Peeko, but they were unable to break through its tough shell and were knocked out. When he awoke, Mr. Briney found the Crawdaunt already defeated. Mr. Briney could tell that Ruby was the one who defeated Crawdaunt, but the boy denied the claim. After arriving at Dewford Town, Mr. Briney let Ruby off and set out to continue his search for Relicanth.

At the end of this chapter, Mr. Briney is revealed to have become captain of the S.S. Tidal.

FireRed & LeafGreen arc

Mr. Briney is called by his old friend, Ultima, after she obtained the Old Sea Map that would allow Briney to find Faraway Island. Despite this, Briney informs Ultima that he managed to reach Faraway Island on his own. Mr. Briney reveals that also saw the Mythical Pokémon, Mew, but it flew away from him and his crew to the Kanto region.

Emerald arc

Mr. Briney is seen transporting the five petrified forms of Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Silver to the Battle Frontier.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

Mr. Briney is revealed to be old friends with Mr. Stone and Drake. He assists Mr. Stone and Steven by providing them with sea transportation to help prevent a giant meteoroid from crashing into the Hoenn region. He takes Steven, Mr. Stone, Sapphire, Emerald, Drake, and Ultima to Sea Mauville, where they can use a special machine known as the Absorber to power a dimensional shifter that will help stop the meteoroid.

The next day, Mr. Stone and Steven use the Absorber on Sapphire's Chic and Emerald's Sceptile. The process drains the life energy of the two Pokémon and transfers it into the dimensional shifter, but also causes intense pain to Chic and Sceptile. The scene of watching the two Pokémon in pain horrifies everyone. After the dimensional shifter is filled with energy, the area is attacked by Zinnia and her small army of Team Aqua and Magma Grunts in order to destroy the shifter. Mr. Briney helps fend off Zinnia and her allies long enough for Ruby to arrive and stop the fighting. After Ruby convinces Zinnia to leave, he asks Drake to take him to a place where he can get information on the Legendary Pokémon Rayquaza. Drake agrees and has Mr. Briney take everyone to Meteor Falls.

During the trip, Hoopa is tricked into summoning Groudon and Kyogre from their resting places. The two super-ancient Pokémon make their way to Maxie and Archie, who use the restored Red and Blue Orbs to revert Groudon and Kyogre into their Primal forms. To test Kyogre's new power, Archie has Kyogre create a giant whirlpool to sink the S.S. Tidal into the sea. After escaping and making their way to shore, Drake, Ultima, and Briney are saved by the Draconids and taken to Meteor Village to recuperate.

Mr. Briney appears in We've Found Team Magma's Secret!!, where he dressed up his Wingull, Peeko, before Red came by. During Red's visit, he asked Mr. Briney about the apparently stuffed bird and Mr. Briney revealed it to him as Peeko. Mr. Briney told them that he takes Peeko everywhere he goes, including the rooms in his house. Later, Mr. Briney informed the group that Peeko had a crush on someone, later revealed to be Clefairy. In time, Team Magma came by and demand Mr. Briney's Peeko. Peeko refused to go with them and attached herself to Clefairy. Peeko's attachment to Clefairy made Mr. Briney sad. When Peeko went racing around with Clefairy, Mr. Briney went after her and tried to protect her from Team Magma. A can fell off of a balloon Clefairy rode on and Mr. Briney read a letter that was attached to the can, learning that Peeko liked Mr. Briney more than Clefairy and wanted to stay with him.
