Bulbapedia defines a signature move as the move, or more rarely moves, that is most closely associated with a specific Pokémon (or its evolutionary family or Legendary or Mythical group).
To be a signature move, a move must be either:
- a move that only one Pokémon (or evolutionary line, or Legendary or Mythical group) can learn by leveling up if that Pokémon or an evolutionary relative was able to learn the move when the move was first introduced,
- a move that no Pokémon learn by leveling up and only one Pokémon can learn (including event-exclusive moves),
- or a move that is the only move known to a specific evolutionary line when the first member of the line of Pokémon was introduced.
If multiple moves qualify for a single Pokémon, the signature move is (or are) any move(s) that qualifies in the current generation. If no move qualifies in the current generation, the signature move is whichever qualified in the most games (counting pairs of games as one). If two more more are still tied, the signature move is the one that qualified in the earliest game. If two or more moves are still tied, the signature move is the one available to the fewest Pokémon in that first game.
