'''Happiness''' is a measurement of how much a Pok?mon loves its {{pkmn|Trainer}} and enjoys being in their care. Happiness affects the [[evolution]] of {{cat|Pok?mon that evolve by happiness|certain Pok?mon}}, the power of {{m|Return}} and {{m|Frustration}}, and the availability of a few in-game items and ribbons. Certain events increase a Pok?mon's happiness (gaining a level, walking 256 steps) or decrease it (fainting, using [[herbal medicine]]).

'''Friendship''' (Japanese: '''なつき''' ''emotional attachment''), historically referred to by fans as '''happiness''', is a measurement of how much a {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} is attached to its {{pkmn|Trainer}} and enjoys being in their care.

Happiness was introduced in {{game|Yellow}} for the player's starting Pikachu only, and expanded to cover all Pok?mon in [[Generation II]].
In the [[core series]] games, friendship was introduced in {{game|Yellow}}, though only for the {{OBP|Pikachu|Yellow}} received at the beginning of the game. It was expanded to apply to all Pokémon starting in [[Generation II]].

==Generation I==
Friendship affects the [[Friendship Evolution|Evolution of certain Pokémon]], the power of certain [[move]]s, and the availability of a few in-game [[item]]s and [[ribbon]]s. Certain activities/events can increase a Pokémon's friendship (such as gaining a [[level]] and walking a certain amount of steps), while others decrease their friendship (such as [[fainting]] and using [[herbal medicine]]).
A prototype of the happiness system used by later games was introduced in {{game|Yellow}}, the last [[main series]] game of [[Generation I]]. Like the later system, its value ranged between 0 and 255 inclusive; however, this value was only applied to the {{ga|Red's Pikachu|Pikachu}} the player [[starter Pok?mon|started with]].
[[File:PikachuY-Happy.png|thumb|right|Pikachu at maximum happiness]]
Unlike later games, since Pikachu is outside of its [[Pok? Ball]], the {{player}} can turn and look at it at any time as it follows him around the overworld. Pikachu will then indicate its happiness in a small window that appears. At maximum happiness, Pikachu will jump up and down before the window appears.

Like later games, Pikachu's happiness will rise when it gains a level. If its Trainer uses an item on Pikachu, its happiness will also rise, even if it is an item that has no effect on Pikachu (such as a [[Potion]] at full HP). In this manner, Pikachu is much easier to make happy than Pok?mon in future generations.
Friendship is distinct from [[affection]], a separate mechanic used in [[Generation VI]] and some [[Generation VII]] games. However, beginning with [[Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!]], friendship effectively replaced affection, taking on its effects.

Pikachu's happiness drops if it is put into [[Bill's PC]] or faints. Trading it to another game will reset its happiness to 0<!--70?-->.
==Terminology==
{{incomplete|section|Other Japanese and/or English names}}

Happiness is not recorded for any other Pok?mon in Generation I, and the happiness of Pikachu does not affect much: the only real effect it has is whether [[Melanie]] will give {{p|Bulbasaur}} away in [[Cerulean City]], which she will only do if Pikachu's happiness is 147 or higher.
In [[Pokémon Stadium 2]], the List feature (a table containing Pokémon data which is accessible from the {{OBP|PC|Stadium}}) includes a "'''Tame'''" column which contains [[Friendship rating#Pokémon Stadium 2|short text descriptions]] about the friendship of each Pokémon.

According to the in-game descriptions of {{m|Return}} and {{m|Frustration}}, friendship is known as "'''loyalty'''" in {{game2|Gold|Silver|Crystal}}, but in other games it is usually described in terms of how much a Pokémon "'''likes'''" or "'''dislikes'''" the Trainer.

In {{g|XD: Gale of Darkness}}, the {{tc|Sailor}} in [[Gateon Port]] refers to this concept using the terms "'''friendly'''" and "'''friendliness'''" when explaining {{p|Eevee}}'s [[Eeveelutions|Evolutions]].

===Friendship rating descriptions===
! Event
From {{game|Yellow}} onwards, the [[friendship rating|friendship raters]] use a wide variety of informal descriptions related to the Pokémon's friendship. For instance, if a Pokémon has a high friendship value, some raters may describe it as ''"happy"'', ''"trusts you"'', ''"attached to you"'', ''"friendly toward you"'', ''"likes you very much"'', or ''"adores you"'', among other examples.
! colspan = "3" | Change

In particular, the only friendship rater who describes friendship as "taming" is the one in Pokémon Yellow, as seen in the possible quotes ''"Your Pikachu seems tamed."'' or ''"It seems like it hasn't been tamed at all."'' (in addition to the "Tame" data in Pokémon Stadium 2)

If a Pokémon's friendship value is neither high or low, some possible comments include ''"looks neutral"'', ''"warming up"'', or ''"not quite familiar with you"''. If a Pokémon's friendship is low, this has been described including negative statements such as ''"looks mean"'', ''"looks evil"'', ''"very wary"'', or ''"has a vicious look to it"''.

==General mechanics==
[[File:SugimoriFriendBall.png|thumb|175px|A [[Friend Ball]]]]
A Pokémon's friendship value ranges from 0 to 255 (stored as a single byte), and since [[Generation III]], each Pokémon has a [[List of Pokémon by base friendship|base friendship]] value. This base value applies when a [[wild Pokémon]] is {{pkmn2|caught}} with most kinds of [[Poké Ball]]s and in most cases when a Pokémon is [[trade]]d. As of [[Generation IX]], there are two exceptions for caught or traded Pokémon:
* A wild Pokémon caught in a [[Friend Ball]] starts with 200 friendship, regardless of its base friendship; and
* A Pokémon traded back to its [[original Trainer]] regains the friendship it had before being traded away ([[Generation VI]] or later).

Additionally, a Pokémon hatched from an {{pkmn|Egg}} starts with 120 friendship.

===Friendship rating===
{{main|Friendship rating}}

Certain [[Non-player character|NPC]]s in the core games evaluate the friendship of the player's Pokémon.

===Raising and lowering friendship===
[[File:SugimoriLuxuryBall.png|thumb|175px|Luxury Ball]]
[[File:Bag Soothe Bell SV Sprite.png|thumb|250px|Soothe Bell (Generation IX sprite)]]
Friendship is generally increased by taking good care of a Pokémon. Keeping a Pokémon in the player's party, raising it, using items on it, and getting it [[Pokémon groomer|groomed]] will typically increase a Pokémon's friendship. Letting a Pokémon faint and using bitter [[herbal medicine]]s on it will decrease a Pokémon's friendship.

Certain items and conditions (described below) apply additional bonuses to friendship increases. These bonuses do not apply to when friendship is not increased (e.g., using an [[X Attack]] on a Pokémon with high friendship).

====Luxury Ball====
From [[Generation III]] onward, if a Pokémon was caught in a [[Luxury Ball]], any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1.

====Met location====
Activities and events that increase a Pokémon's friendship are more effective in the location where that Pokémon was first encountered (e.g., where it was caught). This effect exists in {{game|Crystal}}, [[Generation III]], and all games from [[Generation V]] onward.

In {{game|Crystal}}, a Pokémon leveled up at its met location gains twice as much friendship. However, only Pokémon caught in Crystal record a met location, and Pokémon traded to a Generation I game have their met location permanently erased.

In Generation III onward (except in Generation IV), if a Pokémon is currently at its met location, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1. This does not apply in [[Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness]].

====Soothe Bell====
If a Pokémon is holding a [[Soothe Bell]], increases to its friendship are boosted by 50% of the change. In [[Generation III]], the increase is applied to the original change in friendship; in subsequent generations, it applies to the friendship change after including Luxury Ball and met location bonuses.

===Effects of friendship===
Starting in [[Generation II]], there are {{cat|Pokémon that evolve by friendship}}. Additionally, certain moves vary in power depending on the user's friendship.

In [[Generation IV]] and since [[Generation VIII]], certain [[ribbons]] are awarded to Pokémon with the maximum (255) friendship value.

Some NPCs also only give gifts or [[Move Tutor|teach moves]] when the player's Pokémon has a certain amount of friendship. Specifically, a Pokémon must have maximized friendship to learn {{m|Draco Meteor}}, {{m|Frenzy Plant}}, {{m|Blast Burn}}, {{m|Hydro Cannon}}, {{m|Grass Pledge}}, {{m|Fire Pledge}}, or {{m|Water Pledge}} prior to [[Generation IX]] introducing them as [[TM|TMs]].

====In-battle bonuses====
{{incomplete|section|needs=Needs more detailed information, dialogue, etc.}}
Beginning in [[Generation VII]], friendship can have in-battle effects that used to depend on [[affection]]. These effects, which vary by game, include surviving a hit that would normally [[Fainting|knock it out]], boosted [[experience]], and recovering from [[status condition]]s.

====Fishing====
In {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}, when [[fishing]], the [[walking Pokémon]]'s friendship affects the odds of getting a bite. The higher the walking Pokémon's friendship is, the higher chance the player has of getting a bite.

====Evolutions based on friendship====
{{main|Friendship Evolution}}

From [[Generation II]] onwards, several Pokémon [[Evolution|evolve]] when they [[level]] up while having a high friendship. These Pokémon evolve when they have at least 220 friendship from Generations II to VII, or 160 friendship from Generation VIII onwards.

====Rewards====
* In {{game|Yellow}}, [[Melanie]] in [[Cerulean City]] will give the {{player}} a {{p|Bulbasaur}} if the {{OBP|Pikachu|Yellow|partner Pikachu}}'s friendship is at least 147. Melanie will give the player this Bulbasaur even if Pikachu is not in the party or even in the game.
* In {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}, a man at the end of the [[Water Labyrinth]] will give the player a {{p|Togepi}} {{pkmn|Egg}} if their lead Pokémon has maximum friendship.
* In [[Johto]], the friendship rater in the [[Goldenrod Department Store]] will give the player {{TM|21|Frustration}} if shown a Pokémon with low enough friendship and {{TM|27|Return}} if shown a Pokémon with high enough friendship.
* In [[Hoenn]]:
** A woman in the [[Pokémon Fan Club]] in [[Slateport City]] will give the player a [[Soothe Bell]] if their lead Pokémon's friendship is at least 150.
** The friendship rater in [[Pacifidlog Town]] will give the player {{TM|21|Frustration}} if shown a Pokémon with less than 50 friendship and {{TM|27|Return}} if shown a Pokémon with at least 150 friendship. In {{game2|Ruby|Sapphire|Emerald}}, this can be repeated weekly, but only one of the two TMs can be received each week.
** In {{g|Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire}}, the [[Nameless Cavern]] only appears when the player has three Pokémon with maximum friendship in their party.
* In [[Sinnoh]], a man in the {{to|Celestic}} [[Pokémon Center]] will give the player a [[Great Ball]] if their lead Pokémon's friendship is high enough. This can be repeated daily.
* In {{game|Black and White|s}}, a woman in [[Nimbasa City]] will give the player a [[Soothe Bell]] if their lead Pokémon's friendship is high enough.
* In {{g|X and Y}}, a woman in {{DL|Coumarine City|Hotel Coumarine}} will give the player a [[Lucky Egg]] if their lead Pokémon has maximum friendship.

===Misconceptions===
Though often thought otherwise, the following factors do ''not'' affect friendship:

* Trying to release the partner {{OBP|Pikachu|Yellow}} or evolve it with a [[Thunder Stone]]{{sup/1|Y}}
* Battling against an [[Elite Four]] member or the [[Pokémon Champion|Champion]]{{sup/1|Y}}
* Depositing a Pokémon in the [[Pokémon Storage System]] (except it loses some friendship in {{game|Yellow}}, and the friendship resets in the Stadium games)
* Letting a Pokémon's [[HP]] fall to critical status
* Letting a Pokémon get a [[status condition]], or walking with a Pokémon with a status condition
* Healing a Pokémon with low HP or with a status condition
* Giving a Pokémon an [[Held item|item to hold]] that is not the [[Soothe Bell]].
* [[Evolution|Evolving]] a Pokémon without [[Methods of Evolution#Evolution via trading|trading it]]
* Using a Pokémon in {{pkmn|battle}} or winning a battle with it.
* Increasing [[affection]]
* Using a [[Scent]] on a Pokémon

==Generation- and game-specific mechanics==
===Generation I===
[[File:PikachuY-Happy.png|thumb|{{OBP|Pikachu|Yellow}} with high friendship]]
Friendship was introduced in {{game|Yellow}} as a mechanic exclusively for the {{OBP|Pikachu|Yellow}} received at the beginning of the game. {{pkmn2|Outsider}} Pikachu are not affected, nor are any {{p|Raichu}} (even if Raichu was evolved from the partner Pikachu through [[trade]]). However, any {{p|Pikachu}} whose [[Original Trainer]] is the {{player}} is treated as their partner Pikachu, and all partner Pikachu share the same friendship value. This value persists if the partner Pikachu is traded, and any change in this value applies to all partner Pikachu.

When in the [[party]] and not [[fainting|fainted]], the partner Pikachu (or the first partner Pikachu in the party, if there are multiple) [[Walking Pokémon|follows the player in the overworld]], and interacting with Pikachu brings up a pop-up window showing Pikachu's face. Apart from certain special events that cause special reactions, Pikachu's expression changes based on its current friendship. At maximum friendship, Pikachu jumps up and down before the window appears.

==Generation II==
[[Vitamin]]s, [[battle item]]s, and {{cat|HP-restoring items}} increase Pikachu's friendship even if they would have no effect (e.g., attempting to use a [[Potion]] on a Pikachu that is fainted or has full health). Using an item in this way does not consume it, so the same item can repeatedly increase Pikachu's friendship.
In [[Generation II]], the happiness system became fully implemented, building on the system used in Yellow by tracking the happiness of every Pok?mon owned by the Trainer. Like before, it is a single byte with a value between 0 and 255.

Happiness is set when a Pok?mon is brought under a Trainer's control: that is, it is 70 when a Pok?mon is captured from the wild, and reset to 70 when a Pok?mon is traded from another game. When a Pok?mon is hatched from an {{pkmn|egg}}, its value is set to 120. If a Pok?mon is captured in a [[Pok? Ball#Generation II Pok? Balls|Friend Ball]], rather than any other kind, its happiness is set to 200 instead.
Waking Pikachu with the [[Poké Flute]] (either in or out of battle) does not change its friendship.

Another function was given to happiness in Generation II: the evolution of certain Pok?mon, which has continued until the present as each generation introduces new Pok?mon which evolve through happiness. Happiness-based evolutions occur when a Pok?mon's happiness is 220 or higher.
===Generation II===
In [[Generation II]], friendship was expanded to apply to all Pokémon. All Pokémon have a base friendship of 70, but any Pokémon caught in a [[Friend Ball]] starts with 200 friendship, and any Pokémon hatched from an {{pkmn|Egg}} starts with 120 friendship.

Unlike in Generation I, happiness will not increase if an item that cannot be used is used on a Pok?mon: for example, using an [[HP Up]] on a {{p|Quilava}} which already has the maximum HP it can have will not result in raised happiness.

In {{game|Crystal}}, if a Pokémon is leveled up at its met location, it will gain twice as much friendship from that level up as usual. Since only Pokémon caught in Pokémon Crystal have a defined met location, Pokémon caught in the [[Generation I]] games, {{game|Gold and Silver|s}}, and Pokémon from [[in-game trade]]s will not receive this bonus. If a Pokémon that has a defined met location is traded to a Generation I game, this data is permanently erased, so it can no longer receive this bonus.

===Generation III===
In [[Generation III]], each Pokémon was assigned a specific [[List of Pokémon by base friendship|base friendship]] value. The [[Luxury Ball]] and [[Soothe Bell]] boosts were also introduced.

Fainting in battle will not alter a Pokémon's friendship if it fainted from {{status|poison}} at the end of a turn.

However, some things, though frequently reported, aren't part of the Generation II modifier. The following are actions that do not affect a Pok?mon's happiness, either positively or negatively:
In the Generation III core series games, if a Pokémon is currently at its met location, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1. This does not apply in [[Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness]].
*Putting a Pok?mon in Bill's PC
*Healing a Pok?mon when weak and injured
*Giving a Pok?mon a hold item
*Using a Pok?mon in battles
*Winning battles with a Pok?mon
*Letting a Pok?mon's HP fall to critical status
*Letting the player's Pok?mon get a status condition like Paralysis
*Walking when the player's Pok?mon has a status condition

==Generation III==
===Generation IV===
Happiness in [[Generation III]] works much the same as before, with two additional happiness-boosting mechanics. If a Pok?mon is caught in a [[Luxury Ball]] or is holding a {{DL|Out-of-battle effect item|Soothe Bell}}, all happiness-raising events will increase the Pok?mon's happiness by one point more; happiness-lowering events are not affected. These effects stack on each other, meaning a Pok?mon in a Luxury Ball holding a Soothe Bell gets two additional points per event.
{{incomplete|section|Figure out the probabilities for the variable massage/grooming events}}
Unlike the previous generation, a Pokémon's met location does not affect the amount of friendship it gains.

Pok?mon now have a [[List of Pok?mon by base happiness|base happiness]] per species; however, most catchable Pok?mon have the standard 70 points as their starting level.

====Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!====
In [[Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!]], friendship is factored into all of a Pokémon's stats, except HP. At maximum friendship, a Pokémon will receive a 10% boost to its stats, before [[awakening values|AVs]] are added in. The friendship multiplier scales directly with the level of friendship, starting from a 0% boost at 0 friendship to receiving the full 10% at 255.

In {{g|Sword and Shield}}, friendship can only be increased to a certain cap without using [[Pokémon Camp]] or {{Berries}}. Pokémon Camp and {{cat|friendship-raising Berries}} are the only ways to reach the maximum friendship value of 255.

===Pok?mon FireRed and LeafGreen===
Various actions can change a Pokémon's friendship:
In {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}, the player can know the happiness level of his/her Pok?mon through the scene which appears after the player uses an item on the Pok?mon. The Pok?mon will either move towards the screen or not move at all. If the Pok?mon does not move, then its happiness level is neutral. The happiness level of the Pok?mon can be indicated by looking at how near the Pok?mon goes to the player. The nearer the Pok?mon moves towards the screen the higher its happiness level and the more it likes its Trainer.

{{Daisy}} makes a return in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Visiting her in Pallet Town will let her groom one of the player's Pok?mon between 15:00 and 16:00 every day, increasing its happiness.
The following methods can decrease a Pokémon friendship (down to a minimum of 0).
*Letting a Pokémon faint, especially when battling a much stronger opponent.
*Using [[herbal medicine]] on it.

The [[Haircut brothers]] also make a return in HeartGold and SoulSilver. The player can visit them on any day of the week besides Monday to give one of their Pok?mon a boost in happiness.
=====Effects=====
In these games, friendship has the following effects:

Note that holding a {{DL|Out-of-battle effect item|Soothe Bell}} will apply a multiplier of 1.5 (rounding down) to only '''positive''' changes and that use of Luxury Balls will ''not'' reduce the effects of negative changes.

Friendship also has an effect in the second game of the [[Pokémon Ranger series]]. {{ra|Partner Pokémon}} can have the condition of ''Fine'', ''Happy'', or ''Very Happy''. When it is in a ''Happy Mood'', black musical notes appear to come out of it. Multicolored musical notes come out when it is ''Very Happy''. This may happen whether or not it is with the {{player}}. This state of mind increases the speed the Partner Gauge fills up due to more Partner Energy being provided.

===Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire ===
{{main|Friendship Evolution|section=Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire}}

<nowiki>*</nowiki> The number of steps and the probability needs further study.
In [[Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire]], the concept of [[friendship Evolution]] is represented by obtaining hearts to evolve certain Pokémon in the Evolution Mode.

? These include [[Pomeg Berry]], [[Kelpsy Berry]], [[Qualot Berry]], [[Hondew Berry]], [[Grepa Berry]], and [[Tamato Berry]] (No. 21-26).
==In the anime==
[[File:Ash and Pikachu.png|thumb|250px|Ash and Pikachu]]
In the {{pkmn|anime}}, the bond between {{pkmn|Trainer}}s and their {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} has been a theme since [[EP001|the first episode]], in which {{Ash}} had trouble to form a friendship with his newly obtained {{AP|Pikachu}}. After risking his safety to protect Pikachu from a flock of angry {{p|Spearow}}, he had earned Pikachu's trust, and the two have been inseparable ever since.

==Generation V==
Pokémon that have friendly relationships with their Trainers are said to perform better in {{pkmn|battle}}s. Ash believes that befriending a Pokémon will make it grow stronger, and he treats {{cat|Ash's Pokémon|all his Pokémon}} with utmost care and respect. However, throughout the series, some Trainers have been shown to focus on raw strength alone, disregarding their Pokémon's feelings and well being. Examples include [[Paul]] and [[Cross]].
Happiness is very much the same in Generation V as it was in Generation IV. As far as it has been tested, happiness conditions and related items are much the same, with the main differences being in what NPCs will rate and measure happiness. A lady in [[Nacrene City]] will rate the happiness of the player's Pok?mon. Another lady, in the [[Pok?mon Fan Club]] located in [[Icirrus City]] will also rate the happiness of the player's Pok?mon. A third lady in [[Castelia City]] will massage one of your Pok?mon per day, raising its happiness. She is located in the first building on the left side of {{DL|Castelia City|Castelia Street}}.

The happiness statistics appear to have not changed much since Generation IV. Note that holding a {{DL|Out-of-battle effect item|Soothe Bell}} will still apply a multiplier of 1.5 (rounding down) to only '''positive''' changes and that use of {{DL|Pok? Ball|Luxury Ball}}s will ''not'' reduce the effects of negative changes.
Aside from regular battles, friendship is valued in [[Pokémon Contest]]s, since the level of cooperation between {{pkmn|Coordinator}} and Pokémon is observed by the [[Contest Judge|panel of judges]] during the [[Appeal|Performance Stage]]. Additionally, in the [[Contest Battle|Battle Stage]], Coordinators are expected to be in synchronicity with their Pokémon the entire time. In ''[[AG078|Cruisin' for a Losin'<nowiki/>]]'', the Director of the {{pkmn|Activities Committee|Contest Committee}}, [[Raoul Contesta|Mr. Contesta]], stated that a Pokémon's well being must be the number one priority of a Coordinator.

<nowiki>*</nowiki> The number of steps and the probability needs further study, as is the case with the Generation IV statistics.
In ''[[DP075|Our Cup Runneth Over!]]'', Contest Master [[Wallace]] stressed the importance of kinship. He also said that playing with Pokémon can help Trainers and Coordinators in learning how to bring out the potential of their Pokémon. In addition to enhancing a Pokémon's appearance, {{pkmn|groomer|Pokémon grooming}} is said to make them happier. Trainers who devote themselves to the development of techniques that improve a Pokémon's health and happiness are known as {{tc|Pokémon Breeder}}s. Some people study to become [[Pokémon Connoisseur]]s to be able to identify the compatibility between Trainers and Pokémon and then offer advice on how to strengthen their friendship.

==Evolutions==
Just like in the {{pkmn|games}}, friendship affects the [[power]] of {{m|Frustration}}. This was shown in ''[[AG175|Going for Choke!]]'', in which [[Harley]]'s {{p|Banette}} received a boost while using the [[move]] under the command of [[Jessie]], a Trainer it does not like. Although the concept of {{cat|Pokémon that evolve by friendship|Evolution by friendship}} has not been addressed directly, the [[Soothe Bell]] has appeared in the anime. In ''[[Pokémon the Series: XY]]'', the friendship between Ash and his {{AP|Greninja}} triggered a temporary transformation known as [[Bond Phenomenon]].
Several Pok?mon evolve after being leveled up when their happiness level is at or above 220:

{| align="center" style="background: #{{md blue color dark}}; color: #{{factory color dark}}; {{roundy|10px}}; border: 5px solid #{{md blue color}};"
In contrast with the games, where a Pokémon of a certain [[level]] will only obey its Trainer if the Trainer possesses specific achievements, disobedient Pokémon in the anime will gain respect for their Trainers after realizing how far the Trainer is willing to go to befriend, protect, and care for the Pokémon.

Happiness raters are [[Non-player character|NPC]]s that will indicate the happiness of the first Pok?mon in the player's party when spoken to. Some will give away certain items depending on the happiness, while others just tell the player how happy the Pok?mon is.
* In all [[core series]] games from [[Generation III]] to [[Generation VII]], every [[Non-player character|non-playable]] {{pkmn|Trainer}}'s Pokémon that knows {{m|Frustration}} or is in {{v2|Emerald}}'s {{gdis|Battle Factory|III}} has 0 friendship, and all other NPCs' Pokémon in those generations have 255 friendship.

Florian with his Shiny Lucario, a Pokémon that evolves via friendship

Friendship (Japanese: なつき emotional attachment), historically referred to by fans as happiness, is a measurement of how much a Pokémon is attached to its Trainer and enjoys being in their care.

In the core series games, friendship was introduced in Pokémon Yellow, though only for the Pikachu received at the beginning of the game. It was expanded to apply to all Pokémon starting in Generation II.

Friendship affects the Evolution of certain Pokémon, the power of certain moves, and the availability of a few in-game items and ribbons. Certain activities/events can increase a Pokémon's friendship (such as gaining a level and walking a certain amount of steps), while others decrease their friendship (such as fainting and using herbal medicine).

Friendship is distinct from affection, a separate mechanic used in Generation VI and some Generation VII games. However, beginning with Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, friendship effectively replaced affection, taking on its effects.

Reason: Other Japanese and/or English names

In Pokémon Stadium 2, the List feature (a table containing Pokémon data which is accessible from the PC) includes a "Tame" column which contains short text descriptions about the friendship of each Pokémon.

According to the in-game descriptions of Return and Frustration, friendship is known as "loyalty" in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, but in other games it is usually described in terms of how much a Pokémon "likes" or "dislikes" the Trainer.

In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, the Sailor in Gateon Port refers to this concept using the terms "friendly" and "friendliness" when explaining Eevee's Evolutions.

In Pokémon Gold & Silver: Prima's Official Strategy Guide, it is called "happiness". In Pokémon Gold and Silver: Complete Pokédex (page 19), it is called "friendliness".

Friendship rating descriptions

From Pokémon Yellow onwards, the friendship raters use a wide variety of informal descriptions related to the Pokémon's friendship. For instance, if a Pokémon has a high friendship value, some raters may describe it as "happy", "trusts you", "attached to you", "friendly toward you", "likes you very much", or "adores you", among other examples.

In particular, the only friendship rater who describes friendship as "taming" is the one in Pokémon Yellow, as seen in the possible quotes "Your Pikachu seems tamed." or "It seems like it hasn't been tamed at all." (in addition to the "Tame" data in Pokémon Stadium 2)

If a Pokémon's friendship value is neither high or low, some possible comments include "looks neutral", "warming up", or "not quite familiar with you". If a Pokémon's friendship is low, this has been described including negative statements such as "looks mean", "looks evil", "very wary", or "has a vicious look to it".

General mechanics

A Pokémon's friendship value ranges from 0 to 255 (stored as a single byte), and since Generation III, each Pokémon has a base friendship value. This base value applies when a wild Pokémon is caught with most kinds of Poké Balls and in most cases when a Pokémon is traded. As of Generation IX, there are two exceptions for caught or traded Pokémon:

  • A wild Pokémon caught in a Friend Ball starts with 200 friendship, regardless of its base friendship; and
  • A Pokémon traded back to its original Trainer regains the friendship it had before being traded away (Generation VI or later).

Additionally, a Pokémon hatched from an Egg starts with 120 friendship.

Friendship rating

Main article: Friendship rating

Certain NPCs in the core games evaluate the friendship of the player's Pokémon.

Raising and lowering friendship

Luxury Ball
Soothe Bell (Generation IX sprite)

Friendship is generally increased by taking good care of a Pokémon. Keeping a Pokémon in the player's party, raising it, using items on it, and getting it groomed will typically increase a Pokémon's friendship. Letting a Pokémon faint and using bitter herbal medicines on it will decrease a Pokémon's friendship.

Certain items and conditions (described below) apply additional bonuses to friendship increases. These bonuses do not apply to when friendship is not increased (e.g., using an X Attack on a Pokémon with high friendship).

Luxury Ball

From Generation III onward, if a Pokémon was caught in a Luxury Ball, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1.

Met location

Activities and events that increase a Pokémon's friendship are more effective in the location where that Pokémon was first encountered (e.g., where it was caught). This effect exists in Pokémon Crystal, Generation III, and all games from Generation V onward.

In Pokémon Crystal, a Pokémon leveled up at its met location gains twice as much friendship. However, only Pokémon caught in Crystal record a met location, and Pokémon traded to a Generation I game have their met location permanently erased.

In Generation III onward (except in Generation IV), if a Pokémon is currently at its met location, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1. This does not apply in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

Soothe Bell

If a Pokémon is holding a Soothe Bell, increases to its friendship are boosted by 50% of the change. In Generation III, the increase is applied to the original change in friendship; in subsequent generations, it applies to the friendship change after including Luxury Ball and met location bonuses.

Effects of friendship

Starting in Generation II, there are Pokémon that evolve by friendship. Additionally, certain moves vary in power depending on the user's friendship.

In Generation IV and since Generation VIII, certain ribbons are awarded to Pokémon with the maximum (255) friendship value.

Some NPCs also only give gifts or teach moves when the player's Pokémon has a certain amount of friendship. Specifically, a Pokémon must have maximized friendship to learn Draco Meteor, Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon, Grass Pledge, Fire Pledge, or Water Pledge prior to Generation IX introducing them as TMs.

Affected moves

Friendship affects the base power of the following moves.

Move Type Category Power Accuracy Notes
Frustration Normal Physical Varies 100% The base power increases as the user's friendship decreases
Pika PapowP Electric Special Varies —% The base power increases as the user's friendship increases
Return Normal Physical Varies 100% The base power increases as the user's friendship increases
Veevee VolleyE Normal Physical Varies —% The base power increases as the user's friendship increases

In-battle bonuses

Reason: Needs more detailed information, dialogue, etc.

Beginning in Generation VII, friendship can have in-battle effects that used to depend on affection. These effects, which vary by game, include surviving a hit that would normally knock it out, boosted experience, and recovering from status conditions.

Fishing

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, when fishing, the walking Pokémon's friendship affects the odds of getting a bite. The higher the walking Pokémon's friendship is, the higher chance the player has of getting a bite.

Evolutions based on friendship

Main article: Friendship Evolution

From Generation II onwards, several Pokémon evolve when they level up while having a high friendship. These Pokémon evolve when they have at least 220 friendship from Generations II to VII, or 160 friendship from Generation VIII onwards.

Rewards

Misconceptions

Though often thought otherwise, the following factors do not affect friendship:

Generation- and game-specific mechanics

Generation I

Pikachu with high friendship

Friendship was introduced in Pokémon Yellow as a mechanic exclusively for the Pikachu received at the beginning of the game. Outsider Pikachu are not affected, nor are any Raichu (even if Raichu was evolved from the partner Pikachu through trade). However, any Pikachu whose Original Trainer is the player is treated as their partner Pikachu, and all partner Pikachu share the same friendship value. This value persists if the partner Pikachu is traded, and any change in this value applies to all partner Pikachu.

When in the party and not fainted, the partner Pikachu (or the first partner Pikachu in the party, if there are multiple) follows the player in the overworld, and interacting with Pikachu brings up a pop-up window showing Pikachu's face. Apart from certain special events that cause special reactions, Pikachu's expression changes based on its current friendship. At maximum friendship, Pikachu jumps up and down before the window appears.

Modification

Various actions can change Pikachu's friendship level:

Event Change based on current friendship
0 to 99 100 to 199 200 to 255
The partner Pikachu levels up while in the party +5 +3 +2
Use medicine on the partner Pikachu (even if unsuccessful),
other than PP Up, Full Heal, Revive, Max Revive, Ether, Max Ether, Elixer, Max Elixer
Challenge a Gym Leader with non-fainted partner Pikachu in the party
(if the player has multiple partner Pikachu, the first must not be fainted)
+3 +2 +1
Walk 255 steps with Pikachu following (50% chance) +2 +1
Teach Pikachu a TM or HM move +1 0
Use a battle item on the partner Pikachu (even if unsuccessful), other than X Accuracy
The partner Pikachu faints
(including during link battles)
If opponent is less than 30 levels higher -1
If opponent is at least 30 levels higher, or outside of battle -5 -10
Deposit the partner Pikachu in the Pokémon Storage System from the party -3 -5
Trade Pikachu away -10 -20

Vitamins, battle items, and HP-restoring items increase Pikachu's friendship even if they would have no effect (e.g., attempting to use a Potion on a Pikachu that is fainted or has full health). Using an item in this way does not consume it, so the same item can repeatedly increase Pikachu's friendship.

Waking Pikachu with the Poké Flute (either in or out of battle) does not change its friendship.

Generation II

In Generation II, friendship was expanded to apply to all Pokémon. All Pokémon have a base friendship of 70, but any Pokémon caught in a Friend Ball starts with 200 friendship, and any Pokémon hatched from an Egg starts with 120 friendship.

Modification

Various actions can change a Pokémon's friendship:

Event Change based on current friendship

If opponent is at least 30 levels higher, or outside of battle -5 -10
Using EnergyPowder or Heal Powder -5 -10
Using Energy Root -10 -15
Using Revival Herb -15 -20

In Pokémon Crystal, if a Pokémon is leveled up at its met location, it will gain twice as much friendship from that level up as usual. Since only Pokémon caught in Pokémon Crystal have a defined met location, Pokémon caught in the Generation I games, Pokémon Gold and Silver, and Pokémon from in-game trades will not receive this bonus. If a Pokémon that has a defined met location is traded to a Generation I game, this data is permanently erased, so it can no longer receive this bonus.

Generation III

In Generation III, each Pokémon was assigned a specific base friendship value. The Luxury Ball and Soothe Bell boosts were also introduced.

Modification

Various actions can change a Pokémon's friendship:

Event Change based on current friendship
0 to 99 100 to 199 200 to 255

Fainting in battle will not alter a Pokémon's friendship if it fainted from poison at the end of a turn.

In the Generation III core series games, if a Pokémon is currently at its met location, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1. This does not apply in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

Unlike the previous generation, a Pokémon's met location does not affect the amount of friendship it gains.

In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the massage at the Ribbon Syndicate is not affected by any friendship boosts, and the Soothe Bell does not affect friendship gained when using a battle item.

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl only, due to a bug, using herbal medicine on a Pokémon with low friendship while in battle can cause its friendship to underflow to a value near the 255 maximum.[1]

The met location friendship boost introduced in Generation III returned. Additionally, Generation V introduced Befriending Power as a Pass Power; it boosts any increase to friendship by one to three points depending on the strength of the power used. Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!

In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, friendship is factored into all of a Pokémon's stats, except HP. At maximum friendship, a Pokémon will receive a 10% boost to its stats, before AVs are added in. The friendship multiplier scales directly with the level of friendship, starting from a 0% boost at 0 friendship to receiving the full 10% at 255.

  • 10% accuracy subtracted from an opponent's move (no effect on sure-hit moves, however)
  • Increased critical hit ratio (namely, each stage's chance is doubled)

Reason: Test and update chart with thresholds and values for all friendship increasing/decreasing factors like vitamins, battle items, herbs, etc., confirm untested thresholds for camp/berries, do they actually cap at 179? Examples
Modification

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, friendship can only be increased to a certain cap without using Pokémon Camp or Berries. While this is enough to evolve Pokémon that evolve with high friendship, it is not enough to receive any in-battle friendship bonuses. Pokémon Camp and friendship-raising Berries are the only ways to reach the maximum friendship value of 255.

Various actions can change a Pokémon's friendship:

Event Change based on current friendship
0 to 99 100 to 159 160 to 179 180+
Level up +3 +2 0

If opponent is at least 30 levels higher -5 -10
Walking 128 steps (for whole party, 50% chance to occur) +1 0
Walking 255 steps with walking Pokémon in Isle of Armor or Crown Tundra +1 0

The following methods can only increase Pokémon's friendship up to a maximum of 179. After 179 friendship, these methods no longer boost friendship.

The following methods can increase a Pokémon's friendship regardless of their current friendship (up to the maximum of 255).

  • Using friendship-raising Berries
  • Pokémon Camp:
    • Playing with them using toys, especially toy balls.
    • Breaking up fights involving the Pokémon by calling it over to you.
    • Cooking curry with the Pokémon, especially when using lots of rare Berries.

The following methods can decrease a Pokémon friendship (down to a minimum of 0).

  • Letting a Pokémon faint, especially when battling a much stronger opponent.
  • Using herbal medicine on it.
Effects

In these games, friendship has the following effects:

Friendship Camp hearts Effect

Two Pokémon in a Happy Mood

Friendship also has an effect in the second game of the Pokémon Ranger series. Partner Pokémon can have the condition of Fine, Happy, or Very Happy. When it is in a Happy Mood, black musical notes appear to come out of it. Multicolored musical notes come out when it is Very Happy. This may happen whether or not it is with the player. This state of mind increases the speed the Partner Gauge fills up due to more Partner Energy being provided.

In the anime

Ash and Pikachu

In the anime, the bond between Trainers and their Pokémon has been a theme since the first episode, in which Ash had trouble to form a friendship with his newly obtained Pikachu. After risking his safety to protect Pikachu from a flock of angry Spearow, he had earned Pikachu's trust, and the two have been inseparable ever since.

Pokémon that have friendly relationships with their Trainers are said to perform better in battles. Ash believes that befriending a Pokémon will make it grow stronger, and he treats all his Pokémon with utmost care and respect. However, throughout the series, some Trainers have been shown to focus on raw strength alone, disregarding their Pokémon's feelings and well being. Examples include Paul and Cross.

Aside from regular battles, friendship is valued in Pokémon Contests, since the level of cooperation between Coordinator and Pokémon is observed by the panel of judges during the Performance Stage. Additionally, in the Battle Stage, Coordinators are expected to be in synchronicity with their Pokémon the entire time. In Cruisin' for a Losin', the Director of the Contest Committee, Mr. Contesta, stated that a Pokémon's well being must be the number one priority of a Coordinator.

In Our Cup Runneth Over!, Contest Master Wallace stressed the importance of kinship. He also said that playing with Pokémon can help Trainers and Coordinators in learning how to bring out the potential of their Pokémon. In addition to enhancing a Pokémon's appearance, Pokémon grooming is said to make them happier. Trainers who devote themselves to the development of techniques that improve a Pokémon's health and happiness are known as Pokémon Breeders. Some people study to become Pokémon Connoisseurs to be able to identify the compatibility between Trainers and Pokémon and then offer advice on how to strengthen their friendship.

Just like in the games, friendship affects the power of Frustration. This was shown in Going for Choke!, in which Harley's Banette received a boost while using the move under the command of Jessie, a Trainer it does not like. Although the concept of Evolution by friendship has not been addressed directly, the Soothe Bell has appeared in the anime. In Pokémon the Series: XY, the friendship between Ash and his Greninja triggered a temporary transformation known as Bond Phenomenon.

In contrast with the games, where a Pokémon of a certain level will only obey its Trainer if the Trainer possesses specific achievements, disobedient Pokémon in the anime will gain respect for their Trainers after realizing how far the Trainer is willing to go to befriend, protect, and care for the Pokémon.
