Juan (Japanese: アダン Adan) is the Gym Leader of Sootopolis City's Gym, known officially as the Sootopolis Gym. He left his Gym in the care of his former student, Wallace, but returned after Wallace replaced Steven and moved up to the position of Pokémon Champion. Juan (Japanese: アダン Adan) is the Gym Leader of Sootopolis City's Gym, known officially as the Sootopolis Gym, in Emerald. He replaced Wallace, his (former) student, who in Emerald was moved up to the position of League Champion, replacing Steven. He gives the Rain to trainers who defeat him. He specializes in Water Pokémon.
In addition to being a Gym Leader, Juan is an accomplished Coordinator in the anime.

In addition to being a Gym Leader, Juan is also an accomplished Coordinator.
In the core series games
Juan is Wallace's mentor. Prior to the events of Emerald, Juan was the Gym Leader of Sootopolis. He temporarily gave up his position to Wallace, then later reclaimed it once Wallace became the Hoenn League Champion.

In Emerald, Juan runs the Sootopolis City Gym, where he gives out the Rain Badge and 03 upon being defeated.
In B2W2, Juan participates in the Pokémon World Tournament.
Juan does not appear in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, but his status as Wallace's mentor is mentioned by Lisia.

Main series
Juan is quite the celebrity type in Sootopolis, putting on shows with his Pokémon. He has many female fans, and is considered very dashing. In addition to being a Gym Leader, he is a former winner of the Grand Festival. He appeared in The Great Eight Fate and Eight Ain't Enough when he battled Ash, who won the Rain Badge after a tough battle.

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire
Juan debuted in The Great Eight Fate!, where he was first seen putting on a show with his Pokémon at the inauguration of an art piece in Sootopolis City. Following his water show, TRT appeared to try to steal Juan's Pokémon. After hearing James's melodic voice, Juan initially mistook the trio for artists, but when Ash and ashfr told him that they were a trio of thieves, he easily sent them blasting off.

After that, Ash challenged him to a Gym battle, which Juan accepted. He then offered the group a ride to the Sootopolis Gym on his boat, where May complimented Juan on his performance. Juan then revealed that he was once a Pokémon Coordinator. After winning the five required Ribbons, he entered the Grand Festival and won with the help of Milotic and the others, earning the Ribbon Cup and receiving the title of Top Coordinator.

When they got to the Gym, Juan's butler and Gym assistants Sebastian informed Ash that a Gym battle is divided into two stages: the first is a Double Battle held in a large swimming pool, while the other consists of one-on-one battles conducted on a battlefield resembling a lake surrounded by land. Ash was able to win both stages, and in Eight Ain't Enough, he defeated Juan's ace Pokémon, Milotic, thus winning the Rain and qualifying for the Ever Grande Conference.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl
Juan reappeared in a flashback in Playing The Leveling Field!.

He has a butler, Sebastian, who also serves as the Gym assistant.
Character
Juan is a polite person who often describes things in a uniquely poetic manner. He revealed that he decided to specialize in Water Pokémon because of their streamlined physiques and their weakness to Electric moves. He also accepts his mistakes and rationalizes them as being one of the best ways to add appeal to a Contest Battle.
During a Gym battle, Juan has his Pokémon use attacks in quick succession, often making it hard for a challenger to land an attack. He uses each of his Pokémon's unique characteristics, like Whiscash's whiskers or Seaking's horn, to showcase their individuality and strength.

Juan also makes a cameo appearance in a flashback in Playing the Leveling Field!.
Juan's position as Gym Leader and his Coordinator past has made him a well-known personality in Sootopolis City. He is particularly popular with young women.

With the help of Milotic, Juan was able to win the Grand Festival, earning the Ribbon Cup and the title of Top Coordinator. Juan used Milotic as his final Pokémon in the Gym battle against Ash. With its elegant grace and power, Milotic was able to gain the upper hand against Ash. It defeated Ash's Swellow with Hydro Pump and Twister, then put up a good fight against Pikachu thanks to its ability to Recover from Electric attacks. It was also able to draw in Pikachu's Thunder with Iron Tail. However, Pikachu pulled Milotic below the water and used Thunder to defeat it, thus earning Ash the Rain.

Luvdisc, however, was fast enough to dodge that attack and used Sweet Kiss, confusing Grovyle. Grovyle hit itself in its confusion, and Luvdisc finished it off with Water Gun, which resulted in a loss for Grovyle despite the type advantage. Ash switched back to Corphish. The two Pokémon kept dodging each other's attacks until Luvdisc dived underwater and Ash ordered Corphish to hit the water with Crabhammer. Corphish's attack sprayed the battlefield with water, simulating heavy rain, which activated Luvdisc's Ability, Swift Swim, allowing it to move even faster than before. Eventually, Corphish managed to hit Luvdisc with another Crabhammer, taking it out of the battle.

GOTCHA!
Juan briefly appeared in GOTCHA!.

Juan was once Wallace's mentor and the Sootopolis Gym Leader. Later, Wallace succeeded him as the Gym Leader after winning the Hoenn Pokémon League. When Hoenn got into the crisis because of the fight between Groudon and Kyogre, Wallace had to take up the place as the Champion and asked Juan to take over as the Gym Leader again.

History
Past
Juan was once Wallace's mentor and the Sootopolis Gym Leader. Despite Wallace winning the Pokémon League, he rejected the title of Champion to take over the Sootopolis Gym after his master.

He was the one who rescued Tate & Liza when they were trapped in Mack's fire illusion in Mt. Pyre, as well as Ruby and Sapphire when they were being blown away by the Groudon's and Kyogre's energy in Sootopolis. He brought all of them to the Mirage Island and requested Liza & Tate to train Ruby and Sapphire about double battle, in order to prepare the two trainers for the final showdown against Groudon and Kyogre. Juan himself also trained Ruby and Sapphire to increase their mental strength, so that they would not be controlled by the two Orbs, as Maxie and Archie had been.
Ruby & Sapphire
During the battle between Groudon and Kyogre, Wallace was forced to take up the title of Champion. As a result, Juan took up the title of Gym Leader once again.

As he had been Wallace's mentor, Ruby respected him right from the beginning and calls him "Great Master" (大師匠, dai shishou).
Juan first appeared on Mirage Island with Tate and Liza. He greeted Ruby and Sapphire and informed them that he would be training them to prepare for their upcoming battle with Groudon and Kyogre. He had Tate and Liza train Ruby and Sapphire in the ways of Double Battles so that they may use combination techniques to aid them in their fight. Juan himself trained the two mentally, so that their minds would not be taken over by the Red and Blue Orbs like Maxie and Archie had been. When the time for Ruby and Sapphire to leave had come, Juan stayed behind so that he may safely guide them away from Mirage Island.

Juan would sometimes use French phrases like "Bonjour" and "Tres Bien".

After both Team Magma and Team Aqua are defeated and Groudon and Kyogre have returned to their deep slumber, Juan celebrated the victory with his allies and thanked Sapphire and Ruby for their assistance in the battle.

He gives the Rain Badge to Trainers who defeat him. He specializes in Water-type Pokémon.

In addition to being a Gym Leader, Juan is an accomplished Coordinator in the anime.

In the core series games

Juan is Wallace's mentor. Prior to the events of Pokémon Emerald, Juan was the Gym Leader of Sootopolis. He temporarily gave up his position to Wallace, then later reclaimed it once Wallace became the Hoenn League Champion.

In Emerald, Juan runs the Sootopolis City Gym, where he gives out the Rain Badge and TM03 (Water Pulse) upon being defeated.

In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Juan participates in the Pokémon World Tournament.

Juan does not appear in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, but his status as Wallace's mentor is mentioned by Lisia.

Juan in the anime

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

Juan debuted in The Great Eight Fate!, where he was first seen putting on a show with his Pokémon at the inauguration of an art piece in Sootopolis City. Following his water show, Team Rocket appeared to try to steal Juan's Pokémon. After hearing Chimecho's melodic voice, Juan initially mistook the trio for artists, but when Ash and his friends told him that they were a trio of thieves, he easily sent them blasting off.

When they got to the Gym, Juan's butler and assistant Sebastian informed Ash that a Gym battle is divided into two stages: the first is a Double Battle held in a large swimming pool, while the other consists of one-on-one battles conducted on a battlefield resembling a lake surrounded by land. Ash was able to win both stages, and in Eight Ain't Enough, he defeated Juan's ace Pokémon, Milotic, thus winning the Rain Badge and qualifying for the Ever Grande Conference.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

Juan reappeared in a flashback in Playing The Leveling Field!.

Character

Juan is a polite person who often describes things in a uniquely poetic manner. He revealed that he decided to specialize in Water Pokémon because of their streamlined physiques and their weakness to Electric-type moves.

Juan's position as Gym Leader and his Coordinator past has made him a well-known personality in Sootopolis City. He is particularly popular with young women.

Milotic
Juan's Milotic
Debut The Great Eight Fate!
Voice actors
Japanese Chinami Nishimura
English Chinami Nishimura

Milotic debuted in The Great Eight Fate, where it was first used in a water exhibition. It also won in a battle against Team Rocket. Milotic is Juan's strongest and most experienced Pokémon, having helped Juan in his career as a Coordinator by winning many Pokémon Contests years ago. With the help of Milotic, Juan was able to win the Grand Festival, earning the Ribbon Cup and the title of Top Coordinator. Nowadays, Milotic uses all of its experience against challengers who come to the Sootopolis Gym.

However, Pikachu pulled Milotic below the water and used Thunder to defeat it, thus earning Ash the Rain Badge.

Milotic's known moves are Twister, Hydro Pump, Iron Tail, and Recover.

Luvdisc
Juan's Luvdisc
Debut The Great Eight Fate!
Voice actors
Japanese Megumi Hayashibara
English Rachael Lillis

Luvdisc first appeared in The Great Eight Fate!, where it put on a dazzling performance with Juan's other Pokémon. It was later captured by Team Rocket, but was freed.

During the second round of his battle with Ash, Juan chose Luvdisc against Grovyle. Luvdisc started out with Water Pulse, but Grovyle dodged in time and countered with Leaf Blade.

Luvdisc's known moves are Water Pulse, Sweet Kiss, and Water Gun, and its Ability is Swift Swim.

Sealeo
Juan's Sealeo
Debut The Great Eight Fate!
Voice actors
Japanese Shin-ichiro Miki
English Maddie Blaustein

Sealeo made a cameo during its first appearance in Team Rocket's electric net, but was eventually freed.

In the next episode, Sealeo was one of two Pokémon Juan used in the first round of his battle with Ash. Sealeo used Blizzard on Pikachu and Snorunt, but Snorunt countered it with Icy Wind. It then tried to hit Pikachu with Aurora Beam, but Pikachu dodged. When Ash switched Snorunt for Corphish and attacked with Bubble Beam, Sealeo dived into the water and tried hitting Pikachu again, but once again, Pikachu dodged. After Sealeo was left alone against both of Ash's Pokémon, it used Ice Ball repeatedly and almost won the battle, but was eventually taken down by Corphish's Crabhammer.

Sealeo's known moves are Blizzard, Aurora Beam, and Ice Ball.

Seaking
Juan's Seaking
Debut The Great Eight Fate!
Voice actors
Japanese
English Eric Stuart

Seaking battled alongside Sealeo in the Double Battle against Pikachu and Snorunt. It used Horn Drill to reflect Pikachu's Electric attacks at Snorunt. When Ash's Pokémon were attempting to attack from up close, Seaking hit Snorunt with Hyper Beam, forcing Ash to switch Snorunt for Corphish. Seaking then dived and used Horn Attack, but Corphish caught it by the horn. Seaking followed up with Horn Drill, damaging Corphish, but was then hit by Pikachu's Iron Tail and fainted.

Seaking's known moves are Horn Drill, Hyper Beam, and Horn Attack.

Whiscash
Juan's Whiscash
Debut Eight Ain't Enough!
Voice actors
Japanese Shin-ichiro Miki
English Eric Stuart

The fourth Pokémon Juan used against Ash was Whiscash, who easily defeated Ash's Corphish with Surf and Rock Smash. Ash then chose Swellow, but Whiscash grabbed it and used Tickle followed by Hyper Beam. Juan thought he won the round, but Swellow recovered and used Aerial Ace, even after Whiscash dived underwater. After missing another Hyper Beam and getting hit by another Aerial Ace, Whiscash was unable to battle.

Whiscash's known moves are Surf, Rock Smash, Tickle, and Hyper Beam.

History

Past

Juan was once Wallace's mentor and the Sootopolis Gym Leader. Despite Wallace winning the Pokémon League, he rejected the title of Champion to take over the Sootopolis Gym after his master.

Ruby & Sapphire arc

During the battle between Groudon and Kyogre, Wallace was forced to take up the title of Champion. As a result, Juan took up the title of Gym Leader once again.

Juan in the thirteenth chapter

After both Team Magma and Team Aqua are defeated and Groudon and Kyogre have returned to their deep slumber, Juan celebrated the victory with his allies and thanked Sapphire and Ruby for their assistance in the battle.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

Juan, along with the Hoenn Gym Leaders and Elite Four, is called to Sootopolis City to assist in stopping a meteoroid threatening to destroy the planet.

As Wallace's former mentor, Juan is respected by Ruby, who calls him "Grand Master" (大師匠, dai shishou).
