Iris (Japanese: アイリス Iris) is a girl from the Unova region who is a current traveling companion of Ash.

History

Not much is known about Iris's life before she joined Ash on his journey, but in The Bloom Is on Axew! some of it was revealed. Iris's hometown is the Dragon Village, which is located at the foot of a mountain range, and is home to multiple Axew and Fraxure, and the town was shown to commemorate Zekrom and Reshiram.

As revealed in BW030, Iris's main goal is to become a Dragon master. To help start her on her journey, the matriarch of her village gave Iris an Axew and tasked her with journeying with it and raising it into a fine Haxorus. Doing so could help her reach her goal of becoming a Dragon master. Before joining Ash, she was shown to have obtained an Excadrill. Iris made her first appearance in In The Shadow of Zekrom!, where she was seen watching Zekrom's storm. She appeared again in Enter Iris and Axew!, where she and her Axew were picking Berries in the bushes. Ash scanned the bush with his Pokédex, and seeing it to be an Axew, decided to catch it, so he threw a Poké Ball that hit Iris in the head, enraging her. She and Ash introduced themselves after this slight misunderstanding, and Iris began following Ash. In Dreams by the Yard Full!, upon Cilan's request she officially decided to travel with Ash through Unova.

In A Home for Dwebble! she is shown to make herbal remedies to heal sick Pokémon, similar to Brock. She also claims to have a "sixth sense", as seen in A Night in the Nacrene City Museum! when she claimed to feel the presence of a spirit.

She was separated from the group in BW027 where she bonded with a wild Emolga they had encountered earlier, who she later accepted onto her team.

Character

Iris swinging on vines

She is said to be a wild girl who likes to swing on vines and eat berries. Her Pokémon friend Axew travels with her in her hair instead of inside a Poké Ball. She seems to be very hyper in occasions such as climbing up trees very quickly. She is very adventurous and bold. She is a quick thinker such as in A Sandile Gusher of Change! she saved Ash from falling into hot water. This is again shown in Here Comes the Trubbish Squad! and Minccino-Neat and Tidy! where she is quickly able to evade oncoming danger when Ash and Cilan can't. In some occasions, she becomes invasive with some Pokémon such as Ash's Pikachu which normally causes the Pokémon to attack her.

She seems to think of Ash as a little kid and often treats him like a rookie Trainer despite many of his past adventures and accomplishments. While criticizing Ash's battling methods, Iris is shown to be quite inexperienced in raising Pokémon, as her Axew is still in training and her Excadrill and Emolga will hardly obey her.

Iris's fear of Ice-type Pokémon

She adores most Pokémon, often hugging them upon first meeting; however, she has a particularly strong understanding of Dragon-type and tends to be very excitable around them in particular, not showing fear even against a rampaging Druddigon. Because of this strong passion, she aims to become a Dragon Master like so many from her hometown. The one type she doesn't like are Ice-type due to the fact that Ice-type attacks are super effective against Dragon-type Pokémon. Trip mentions that her fear of Ice-types based on that is unjust as Dragons are super effective against themselves. Iris shrugged this off, however, and mentions that she also has a fear of the cold.
