History

Pre-series

Abe in his youth

Prior to the official opening of Aina's Kitchen, Abe was struggling to develop a complete menu for his new restaurant. A chance encounter with an Oranguru inspired him to put Pinap Berry Juice on the menu, and the pair forged a friendship.

As revealed in Memories in the Mist!, Abe's wife passed away due to an illness while their children were still young. Following the tragedy, Abe continued to raise their children, Mallow and Ulu, on his own while also running Aina's Kitchen.

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

Abe debuted in A Seasoned Search!, where Ash and his classmates were having a meal, only for Mallow to ruin it when she tried to add a pinch of Pikachu's Thunderbolt. He made them some more food to make amends for Mallow's cooking. Then, he explained the history about the legendary Alolan Stew, remarking that the key ingredient of Yellow Nectar was out of date. Despite this, Mallow and Ash went looking for it the next day and were successful.

In The Ol' Raise and Switch!, Abe was serving food to his customers, only for Togedemaru, who Mallow was watching for the weekend, to become overexcited and roll around in a ball, causing trouble by knocking over customers.

In Mallow and the Forest Teacher!, Aina's Kitchen was featured on Alola TV, only for Mallow to run away into the forest after having a falling-out with Abe. There, she encountered the same Oranguru that Abe encountered in the past. Abe later found Mallow and they reconciled.

In The Professors' New Adventure!, Abe attended the wedding of Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet and was part of the catering.

Abe and Mallow were preparing to enter the Alola Bread Festival in Sours for the Sweet!, only for the former to hurt his back carrying flour. However, Ulu returned to the restaurant and took Abe's place. Mallow and her brother worked together and managed to win the competition with their Alola Jam Bread.

In All They Want to Do is Dance Dance!, Abe watched as Mallow and Steenee prepared for their upcoming PokéDance performance at the Pokémon School. He volunteered to take over Mallow's chores so they could have more time to practice.

In Filling the Light with Darkness!, Abe was among the adults who were tired and without motivation due to the effects of a Necrozma. He closed Aina's Kitchen and later visited Oranguru's place.

In Lillier and the Staff!, Abe watched Mallow perform in the school play.

In A Recipe for Success!, Abe asked Mallow to get some ingredients from Oranguru. Afterwards, Olivia, Ash, and the rest of his classmates volunteered to help out at the restaurant. Abe later watched as Mallow returned with a Grassium Z given by Tapu Koko and a Z-Ring given by Oranguru.

Abe and his family

In Living on the Cutting Edge!, Abe and Mallow were preparing food at Aina's Kitchen when a Kartana cut up some of their cabbage without them realizing it.

In Dreams of the Sun and Moon!, Abe helped prepare a showcase of Mallow's latest dishes for her friends to enjoy. In the next episode, Abe greeted Ulu, who returned from his cooking journey. Abe also witnessed Shaymin change into its Sky Forme, after Ulu brought Gracideas for Mallow, and fly away with a trio of Shaymin.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

In Helping the Hometown Hero!, Abe and Ulu prepared food for a party to celebrate the return of Lillie and her family to Alola after they found Mohn.

Character

Abe is often busy running Aina's Kitchen by himself. While his children admire and support his job, as noted by Mallow in Mallow and the Forest Teacher!, she is left to do the domestic chores by herself. On rare occasions, like in Lillier and the Staff!, Abe does close the restaurant down for the night.
