Trip (Japanese: シューティー Shooty) is a Pokémon Trainer from the Unova region and a rival of Ash.

History

Trip

Trip was introduced in In The Shadow of Zekrom! as a beginning Trainer ready to choose his first Pokémon. After meeting with Professor Juniper, he chose Snivy as his new partner. Shortly after obtaining it, he challenged Ash Ketchum to a Pokémon battle. He had much interest in battling Pikachu, a species that is foreign in his region. Because Pikachu could not use any Electric attacks, Trip easily defeated Ash.

Trip appeared again at a Battle Club in BW010, where he and Ash had a 5-on-5 battle. He offered to have a full battle with Ash, which means that he has access to at least 6 Pokémon. His Tranquill defeated Ash's Oshawott and Tepig in just two hits with its Super Luck-boosted Aerial Ace. Afterwards, Trip called Ash's Pikachu and Snivy to be so-so, and the rest of his team to be hopeless causes.

Trip is set to reappear in BW022 alongside his Lampent.

Character

Trip's camera

Trip is a Pokémon photographer, in which he takes photos of Pokémon and places with a green digital camera. He also has an Xtransceiver so that he can keep in touch with the Battle Clubs. Overall, he is a well-reserved individual who tends to keep his feelings to himself. His strategy is all about planning ahead and completing the basics of Pokémon Training.

Trip tends to think very little of the Kanto region, which he refers to as "the boonies", and anyone from there. He thinks of Ash as a hillbilly who needs to go back to the basics of Pokémon Training.

Despite having just started out as a Trainer, Trip already implements many strategies in his battling. He has defeated Ash both times that they have battled, despite Ash being a much more experienced Trainer.

Trivia

Trip and his rival, Ash Ketchum
  • Trip is Ash's third rival whose Japanese name starts with the kana shi, the other two being "Shigeru" and "Shinji" respectively.
    • Notably "Shū", the Japanese name of May's rival Drew, also starts with this same letter. This makes Trip the fourth major rival in the anime who's name starts with a or a variation of it.
  • Similar to Gary and Paul, Ash's rivals in his previous journeys, Trip's name only has four letters.
    • They also weren't nice to Ash at one point or another.
  • Trip owns a member from each of the only two Pokémon families in Generation V that have gender differences.
  • Both Barry and Trip have the same voice actor: Jamie McGonnigal, who are also both rivals of Ash and have a shade of blond hair.
  • Trip bears a resemblence to a character from the Power Rangers franchise, who is also named Trip.
