Onix (Japanese: イワーク Iwark) is a dual-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.
It evolves into Steelix when traded while holding a Metal Coat.
(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for more details).
==Biology== | ==Biology==
Onix is a Pokémon composed of a giant chain of gray boulders that become smaller towards the tail. Its length makes it the tallest Rock Pokémon. It has black eyes and a rounded snout. On top of its head is a rocky spine. As it grows older, it becomes more rounded and smoother, eventually becoming similar to black diamonds. Inside its brain is a magnet that serves as an internal compass, guiding Onix wherever they need to go and prevents them from getting lost while digging.
Onix | |||
Onix tunnels under the ground at over 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour, which causes tremors and a terrifying roar that echoes a long way. Hard objects encountered while tunneling are absorbed into its body, which makes it very sturdy. It also consumes the boulders for food. The massive, winding tunnels it leaves behind are used as homes by Diglett. As seen in the Pokémon Stadium series, Onix is capable of rotating its head, or any part of its body, in a full 360 degrees. It is a very aggressive Pokémon that will constantly attack humans and other Pokémon when in pain, as seen in the Pokémon the Series episode To Master the Onixpected!. As seen in the Pokémon Adventures manga, Onix can be separated from its body segments in battle and be fine later on, either regenerating or reattaching to its body segments. It is said that an Onix that lives for about 100 years will evolve into a Steelix after its composition becomes more diamond-like. It can be found in mountains and List of Pokémon by habitat. As mentioned in Sleep, Onix is known on occasion to sleep while in the middle of digging through tunnels.Onix is believed to be a deep sleeper due to the protection offered by its sturdy body.

Onix evolves into Steelix.

===Origin=== | ===Origin===
Onix | Onix's design may be a visual pun on a rock python or an earthworm. Its great size could have been inspired by the Mongolian death worm, an earthworm-like creature noted for its colossal length (compared to regular worms) of up to 7 feet. The Onix lifestyle, living underground and ingesting massive amounts of soil while tunneling, is much closer to the earthworm lifestyle than the snake lifestyle. Earthworms eat soil and digest the organic material it contains (plant matter, living protozoa, rotifers, nematodes, bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms).

Onix (Japanese: イワーク Iwark) is a dual-type Rock/Ground Pokémon introduced in Generation I.
It evolves into Steelix when traded while holding a Metal Coat.
(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for more details).
Biology
Onix is a Pokémon composed of a giant chain of gray boulders that become smaller towards the tail. Its length makes it the tallest Rock-type Pokémon.
It can be found in mountains and caves. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, Onix is known on occasion to sleep while in the middle of digging through tunnels.[1]Onix is believed to be a deep sleeper due to the protection offered by its sturdy body.
Evolution
Onix evolves into Steelix.
(For specifics on this Pokémon's Evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Evolution data
Onix evolves into Steelix when traded while holding a Metal Coat. Onix cannot evolve into Steelix in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen before the player obtains the National Pokédex, as its evolution will be interrupted. Onix also cannot evolve into Steelix in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, as Steelix is not present in those games. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Onix evolves into Steelix when exposed to a Metal Coat.

Other appearances
Super Smash Bros.
Onix can be summoned via Poké Ball. Once thrown, it flies up into the sky and uses Rock Throw on the player's opponents. This will hit everyone on the field except Kirby if he uses his down special move.
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Onix is the second Poké Float to appear. It provides a horizontally flat area all the time it is on-screen, though it becomes diagonal as it leaves the screen.
Trivia
- Onix is the heaviest and tallest unevolved Pokémon.
- Onix is the only unevolved Pokémon that is used in the Pokémon World Tournament by Trainers beyond the right attendant, being used in all of Brock's teams.
- The Onix line is the only multi-stage evolutionary line which can be completely acquired with in-game trades. However, this is only possible in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, in which the player can trade Bellsprout for Onix in Violet City, and any Pokémon for Steelix in Olivine City.
- The Lagging Tail held item resembles the end of Onix's tail.
- Onix is the only Gigantic Pokémon that can evolve.
- Onix has the highest Defense of all Pokémon that can still evolve.
Origin
Onix's design may be a visual pun on a rock python or an earthworm.
Name origin
Onix may be derived from onyx (a mineral).
Iwark may be a combination of 岩 iwa (rock) and either ブルワーク bulwark or スネーク snake.
