Forretress (Japanese: フォレトス Foretos) is a dual-type Pokémon.
Forretress (Japanese: フォレトス Foretos) is a dual-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves from Pineco starting at level 31.
It evolves from Pineco starting at level 31.

Biology
Biology
Physiology
Forretress is a large, spherical insect Pokémon with no visible limbs. The upper and lower halves of its body are capped by bumpy steel plates, giving it a strong defense against opponents. The outer plates have zigzagging ridges that open along its back and front, revealing its smooth, red inner shell. The inner shell is punctuated by four cylindrical spikes, each tapering to an open point. Between the spikes, the inner shell opens along a straight line to reveal Forretress's eyes, which are round with large pupils. Whatever else lies inside its shell is unknown.
Forretress are a large round cocoon like species of Pokémon. They have two steel pinkish plates positioned on the top and bottom of their bodies. The plates cover most of the upper and lower hemispheres of the Forretress which are shaped with uneven grooves. This forms the outermost shell of a Forretress. A gap along the equator of their bodies exposes a second red shell beneath the outer shell. The red shell also has a smaller gap along the equator through which the eyes can be seen. Along with this, 4 tube-like spikes protrude out the 4 corners of the Forretress’s equator. With the exception of the eyes and possibly the spikes, it is unknown what Forretress look like beneath the armour.

Gender differences
Forretress can defend itself from enemies by shooting out pieces of its outer shell, as a conditioned reflex rather than a conscious effort. It opens its shell to capture prey, but this happens so quickly that its interior body cannot be seen. It lives in List of Pokémon by habitat, attaching itself immovably to tree trunks. As shown in Scarlet and Violet, Forretress is capable of levitation.
None.

Special abilities
Evolution
Possibly the most frequently implemented ability of Forretress is its ability to freely move without the use of limbs. This is done by spinning, bouncing and likely rolling. It’s also possible that like many Steel Pokémon, it aids its movements with Magnet Rise which would also explain its ability to float in the air for quite some time.
Forretress evolves from Pineco.

In order to use certain attacks such as Rollout and protect itself when in danger, it can retract its spikes and completely close its shell essentially concealing all of the Pokémon’s vulnerabilities.
(For specifics on this Pokémon's Evolution in the games, refer to Game data&rarr;Evolution data.)

</div>

When attacking, Forretress makes use of its exceptional spinning skills. It can spin to Rapid Spin against certain attacks suck as Fire Spin. It can employ its steel shell to achieve a Gyro Ball. It may also Spikes from its 4 tube like spikes while spinning in order to deter foes and even lay traps to protect itself.

NPC appearances
* Pokémon: Magikarp Jump: Forretress may appear during Pokémon: Magikarp Jump. As part of the "Forretress Push" training session, the player's Magikarp pushes it to earn JP.

Behavior
Pokédex entries
Forretress are generally peaceful Pokémon and spend most of their time dormant; attached to trees, resting, sleeping or waiting for food. If forced to, they could actively pursue prey or change locations with their buoyant mobility. Being a fully evolved and all around powerful Pokémon, they could easily attack with vicious force if provoked or threatened.

In side games
Forretress are mostly found attached to trees in large forests as they spend little time moving around while in the wild. Their location is not restricted to forests; however, they can be found in many areas provided there are plenty of trees around.

Base stats
Forretress is mainly carnivorous and will wait for prey to come close to it. When within reach, Forretress will open its shell up and devour the creature whole at such a speed that it is impossible to see inside the shell if observing. Its diet would most probably consist of smaller bugs or Bug Pokémon, although it’s not beyond its potential to eat anything organic that will fit in its mouth.

Trivia
Trivia
* Forretress could not learn any Steel moves until Generation IV, and could only learn one Bug move (and this, only by breeding) up until the release of Platinum.
* Forretress and its Pineco share their category with Burmy and Wormadam. They are all known as the Bagworm Pokémon.
** In Platinum, it is possible to have Forretress learn Bug Bite, which would mean it would have to show its face or mouth to bite the foe. This would possibly mean the elimination of the mystery of what is inside its shell. Based on its Emerald Pokédex information however, this seems unlikely. The 'biting' motion could also simply be Forretress clamping its shell on the opponent, something Forretress is known to be able to do.
* Forretress is the first original Steel Pokémon in the National Pokédex, as Magnemite and Magneton were not Steel-types in Generation I.
* Pineco and Forretress share the same species name with Burmy and Wormadam. They are all known as Bagworm Pokémon.
* Forretress's Crystal still sprite is different from that of , making it one of few Pokémon to have three distinctly different sprites in Generation II.
* Oddly, Forretress can learn Swift by breeding in Generation III, but it can't learn it from the move tutor. This also happened to its pre-evolution Pineco.
* In Ranger: Guardian Signs, its Poké Assist is shown to be Steel in the capture screen, but turns out to be Normal after the capture.
* Forretress is the first original Steel Pokémon in the National Dex order. (Magnemite's evolutionary line, which precedes Forretress, wasn't Steel-type in Generation I).
*Forretress could always learn Swift as an Egg move, but oddly could not learn it via TM or Move Tutor until Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
* In Stadium 2, its shell is gray rather than pink.
* Forretress is one of the few Pokémon not native to Sinnoh to have its sprite changed in Platinum.

Origin
Origin
Forretress is based on a bagworm.
Forretress is based on a bagworm, possibly one inhabiting a discarded shell of a Aesculus or a walnut, though it resultingly resembles bivalves such as giant clams, as they share a two-half shell structure. Before Scarlet and Violet depicted it levitating, Forretress's primary means of locomotion was hopping, which is similar to the Mexican jumping bean, a nut pod which appears to jump because it contains a writhing bug larva. Following Pineco's weaponry theme, Forretress seems be based on gun turrets, bombs, cannons and cannonballs, and fortresses. The tube-shaped cannons around it resemble the siphons in siphon (insect anatomy) and siphon (mollusc).

Name origin
Name origin
Forretress's name is a combination of forest and fortress. It may also contain turret referring to the nozzles on its body that it uses to launch Spikes. Although highly unlikely, it may be a combination of forret, French for forest, and tres, an abbreviation of trees, which would make it forest trees, probably referring to its habitat.
Forretress and Foretos may be a combination of forest, fortress, and possibly turret.

Forretress (Japanese: フォレトス Foretos) is a dual-type Bug/Steel Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves from Pineco starting at level 31.

Biology

Forretress is a large, spherical insectoid Pokémon with no visible limbs.

Forretress can defend itself from enemies by shooting out pieces of its outer shell, as a conditioned reflex rather than a conscious effort. It opens its shell to capture prey, but this happens so quickly that its interior body cannot be seen. It lives in tropical and temperate forests, attaching itself immovably to tree trunks. As shown in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Forretress is capable of levitation.

Evolution

Forretress evolves from Pineco.

Trivia

Origin

Forretress is based on a bagworm, possibly one inhabiting a discarded shell of a horse chestnut or a walnut, though it resultingly resembles bivalves such as giant clams, as they share a two-half shell structure. Before Pokémon Scarlet and Violet depicted it levitating, Forretress's primary means of locomotion was hopping, which is similar to the Mexican jumping bean, a nut pod which appears to jump because it contains a writhing bug larva. Following Pineco's weaponry theme, Forretress seems be based on gun turrets, bombs, cannons and cannonballs, and fortresses. The tube-shaped cannons around it resemble the siphons in insects and molluscs.

Name origin

Forretress and Foretos may be a combination of forest, fortress, and possibly turret.
