Earl appeared in Demanding Tests at the Pokémon School!. When the students recommended Red to go to the Pokémon academy, Earl greeted him and his Pokémon when they were about to go in. He then explained some of the basics and motivated Red in going. Red agrees to go to the school and Earl teaches a class, with Red as one of his students. He gave out a test. After the test, Earl called down Red to see him after class since he and his Pokémon failed.

Earl was revealed to have imprisoned some Pokémon and then went down a hallway to another room. In the room, Earl shows Red to one of his bright students who ends up battling him. After the battle, Earl and the student was shocked to see that flunking student defeated someone smart. Earl and the student decided that due to Clefairy's skills, he should teach a class. However, this turned out to be false when the students that Clefairy was teaching were giving him a hard time.

Pokémon
In Pokémon Special, Earl had an academy named "Earl Dervish's Pokémon Academy". It first appeared in the Gold, Silver & Crystal, when Professor Oak went to meet Crystal and give her a Pokédex. Crystal was a helper at the academy, which was in very poor shape and low on money. It is later revealed during the Emerald that Emerald arrived at the academy on that same day, after the Trick Master sent him there. Emerald admired Crystal and decided to stay, not knowing that Oak hired Crystal to complete the Pokédex for him, and the next day she left the academy.
