Hidden Power (Japanese: めざめるパワー Awakening Power) is a damage-dealing Normal-type move introduced in Generation II. Although it appears as a Normal-type move, Hidden Power's actual type varies. It was TM10 from Generation II to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. In Generation VIII, it is the signature move of Unown.

Effect

Main article: Hidden Power (move)/Calculation

Hidden Power deals damage.

Hidden Power can be any type, other than Normal and Fairy, based on its user's IVs. Hidden Power receives a same-type attack bonus if its type matches the user's type. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it instead changes its type to be super effective against the opposing Pokémon.

From Generation III to V, its power also depends on its user's IVs. From Generation VI onward, its power is fixed at 60.

In Generation II and III, it can be either physical or special, corresponding to its type. Due to being treated as a Normal-type move regardless, it can only activate Counter and will never activate Mirror Coat. Starting in Generation IV, it is always special.

Due to never being a Normal-type move, Hidden Power is unaffected by Pixilate, Refrigerate, Aerilate, and Ion Deluge. If the user is under the effect of Electrify, Hidden Power's type will become Electric.

Hidden Power is always treated as Normal-type for Z-Move mechanics, and can be upgraded to Breakneck Blitz by a Normalium Z.

Hidden Power now changes its own type to be super effective against the opposing Pokémon, prioritizing any double weaknesses of dual-typed opponents. While selecting a move, Hidden Power displays the type that it will become against the selected opponent if used that turn. If multiple types are equally effective, Hidden Power's type is chosen at random from those types. This calculation is done on each turn, so if there are multiple valid types, Hidden Power's type may vary between them each turn.

Generation IX

Hidden Power cannot be selected in a battle.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

Hidden Power deals damage, and its type and base power will vary each type the Pokémon enters a new dungeon.

In the Rescue Team series, the type is selected among each of the 17 types with roughly equal probability (the game chooses from the 18 types, including typeless, choosing again if typeless is chosen; if this is done 100 times consecutively, Hidden Power will be of the Fire-type). The base power of the move is chosen among the following values with equal probability: 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 15, and 17. On the description menu, Hidden Power is shown as a typeless move.

With some exceptions, Pokémon learnsets match those from the core series games:

Pokémon GO

In Pokémon GO, Hidden Power is a Fast Attack that has been available since February 16, 2017. While Hidden Power is a Normal-type move in the game data, its actual type varies between individual Pokémon and is visible on the status screen of that Pokémon. Like in the core series, Hidden Power cannot be Normal- or Fairy-type; however, Hidden Power's type is not dependent on IVs and is instead randomly determined. If two players catch the same instance of a wild Pokémon that knows Hidden Power, the resulting Hidden Power type may still differ between the two players. If a Pokémon evolves, its Hidden Power type will also be randomly re-rolled. Hidden Power's type cannot be changed using a Fast TM or Elite Fast TM. If the player uses an Elite Fast TM on a Pokémon that can learn Hidden Power, its Hidden Power type will be displayed on the move selection screen.

If the player battles against a Pokémon that knows Hidden Power in a Raid Battle or Team GO Rocket Battle, the Hidden Power type will always be Fighting. However, its Hidden Power type will be randomly re-rolled if the player ends up capturing that same Pokémon.

Unlike other moves, Hidden Power's type effectiveness is not announced in Trainer Battles.
