Saturn (Japanese: サターン Saturn) is one of Team Galactic's four Commanders in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Versions.

In the games

Saturn is first seen leading the efforts of Team Galactic at Lake Valor near Pastoria City. He battles the player inside Azelf's cave and reveals that Mars is at Lake Verity.

After the events at the Spear Pillar (which Saturn was not present for), he can be found in the Galactic Veilstone Building, contemplating what direction to take Team Galactic in after Cyrus has disappeared; he was never aware of Cyrus's grander plot. However, he learned that "extremism is never the solution".

Quotes

Team Galactic HQ

(to Charon)
"What are you trying to say?"
(to Charon)
"Gramps. Our boss can do without your kind of moral support."
  • Before battle:
"You... You came all the way here just to save some Pokémon? ...Though it's nothing new, I can't say I understand our boss... Why would he let a kid like you come and go freely...? We, Team Galactic, take all that we need, and eliminate what we do not. But anyway. You've taken the trouble to come. Let me welcome you! Consider it payback for your insulting me at the lake."
  • When defeated:
"You're tough, kid! But, I still pity the likes of you."
  • After battle:
"...Gah! What makes you so tough? Fine... do whatever you want with those three Pokémon. Press the button on that machine to set them free."
"Press the button and set them free. Isn't that why you came?"
"Our boss crafted a Red Chain from crystals he took from the three Pokémon. That Red Chain is what he needed to shackle something on Mt. Coronet. It's also apparently needed for creating something. But that's all I know. Who knows what he's planning to do up there."
  • After the Spear Pillar events:
"So, it's you... I've heard about you and what took place at the Spear Pillar. Our leader, Master Cyrus, hated the very idea of spirit. He hated spirit for being incomplete. And yet, using fiery exhortations, he rallied the spirit of others. What he hated most, he used to control others. Isn't that ironic? That fascinated me. I wanted to see what he would do. And I did. At his side. But it's over. A world without spirit... Who would want such a thing?! So, what now...? What to do with Team Galactic? But I've learned that extremism is never the solution... Perhaps we should really be searching for new sources of energy. Instead of lying about it through our commercials."

In the anime

Saturn made his first appearance at the ending of A Secret Sphere of Influence!, though it was a brief appearance at the end of the episode. He, along with the other Team Galactic Grunts, commented that Jessie, James and Meowth did a lousy job at stealing the Adamant Orb for them, and framing Nando for the crime.

Saturn later reappeared in Journey to the Unown!, along with his Bronzor. He managed to steal a cube that was under the guard of the Unown of the Solaceon Ruins and brought it with him back to the Team Galactic HQ.

Saturn appeared again in Enter Galactic!, with the cube he obtained in Solaceon Ruins, which he exposed to the meteorites in Veilstone City, transforming it into the Spear Key. Later, he and a few Galactic Grunts went to go steal the meteorites, but ended up meeting Ash and his friends for the first time. He also battles Brock and his Croagunk with his own Toxicroak, but it ends in a draw, as Team Galactic retreats and fails their mission.

He appeared in Losing Its Lustrous and Double Team Turnover!, along with Cyrus, Jupiter and Mars. They stole the Lustrous Orb and the Adamant Orb from the Celestic Town Historical Research Center.

He reappeared with Cyrus, Jupiter and Charon in Saving the World From Ruins! where he was put in charge of excavation of the Spear Pillar from Mt. Coronet.

Saturn appeared again in Gateway to Ruin!, along with Charon, where they attempted to locate the ruins of Mt. Coronet.

Saturn also appeared in the Team Galactic finale with three episodes, Unlocking the Red Chain of Events!, The Needs of the Three! and The Battle Finale of Legend!. During the final battle, his Toxicroak was defeated by Croagunk and after Cyrus passed through the portal created by Dialga and Palkia he realized that Cyrus had just been using him and the other commanders to reach his own goals and cared little for those who served him. Afterwards he was arrested along with Mars and Jupiter by Looker and, unlike Mars, knew that Team Galactic was finished.

He appeared briefly in DP191 in Team Rocket's fantasy with all the other members of Team Galactic.

Pokémon

This listing is of Saturn's known Pokémon in the anime:

Bronzor
Saturn's Bronzor

Bronzor first appeared in Journey to the Unown! where it guided Saturn and his squad through the Solaceon Ruins. It was also responsible for confusing the Unown living in the ruins which resulted in them all running wild.

It's next appearance was in Losing Its Lustrous! where Bronzor proved instrumental in Team Galactic's plan to steal the Lustrous Orb by putting the security teams guarding it to sleep. It was then defeated in battle by Cynthia's Garchomp.

Bronzor's known moves are Flash, Confuse Ray, Teleport* and Hypnosis.

Toxicroak first appeared in Enter Galactic! where it helped to steal the Veilstone City meteorites. During the battle it developed a fierce rivalry with Brock's Croagunk.

It next appeared during Losing Its Lustrous! and Double Team Turnover! where it assisted in the stealing of the Adamant Orb and the Lustrous Orb as well as defeating Croagunk in battle. and then helped Saturn and Charon with the excavation of Mt. Coronet in Gateway to Ruin!. Its final appearance came in The Battle Finale of Legend!, where after assisting in Team Galactic's plans to summon Dialga and Palkia it was defeated by Croagunk, allowing it to gain revenge for its earlier defeat.

Saturn and his Croagunk with Mars and her Purugly in the manga

Saturn's role in Team Galactic is to raise funds for their projects and he has the permission of Cyrus to use any means he feels necessary. Saturn decided to kidnap Platinum for a ransom, as she is the daughter of the wealthiest family in Sinnoh, but his attack at the Lost Tower was thwarted by her real bodyguards. Furious, Saturn told his grunts to block Route 210 and force her to visit Veilstone City so that he can have his revenge.

Saturn first appeared in the ruins of Celestic Town along with Jupiter and Cyrus. He battled Mitsumi while Hareta pursued his leader.

Just like in the games, Saturn was assigned to Lake Valor to capture Azelf. At the lake, Hareta and Saturn battled; Saturn initially had the upper hand using his Gallade but Hareta was able to turn the tide. After both his Gallade and Rhyperior were defeated, Saturn was fired from Team Galactic by Cyrus, but earned a second chance by using a Revive on Rhyperior so Cyrus's Gyarados would not lose to Hareta.

After the events at the Spear Pillar, Saturn appeared to have broken away from the newly formed Neo Team Galactic and its leader, Charon. He reappeared at Canalave Library in an attempt to exact revenge on Hareta, but failed, and promised to attack again at the Galactic Veilstone Building.

Trivia

  • Saturn was incorrectly referred to as female on multiple occasions outside of the games. He was identified as female in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure! and then again on Pokémon Sunday. The confusion is also furthered by his feminine Japanese voice.
    • It should also be noted that Saturn is one of the few Trainers in the main series games not encountered in the Battle Frontier to have a Pokémon with a 50-50 chance of being male or female to be the opposite gender as himself.
  • Saturn is the only Team Galactic Commander whose Spanish name wasn't changed to correspond to a different planet; Jupiter's and Mars's names were changed to correspond to planets with names of Roman goddesses (Ceres and Venus, respectively).
    • However, Ceres is a dwarf planet, like Pluto (from which Charon's Japanese name was taken).
  • Saturn is the lieutenant Commander of Team Galactic, meaning he is of a higher rank than Jupiter and Mars and his immediate superior is the Galactic Boss, Cyrus, which would explain why after Cyrus disappeared, the remaining Team Galactic members followed under the command of Saturn.
  • Saturn is the Commander the player will battle the least in Platinum, aside from Charon, who doesn't battle the player at any point in the game.
