An Ace Trainer (Japanese: エリートトレーナー Elite Trainer, shortened in Generation I to エリート♂ Elite♂ and エリート♀ Elite♀) is a type of Pokémon Trainer that debuted in the Generation I games. They are depicted as teens or young adults and can be male or female. The title Ace Trainer is used in Generation IV and onward; prior to this, the Trainer class was known as Cooltrainer.

They are Trainers who frequently travel around the world to meet new Trainers and take part in Pokémon League competitions. In Generation I, the Cooltrainers are shown to be carrying whips, which were also used by Team Rocket Grunts, Tamers, and Roughnecks at the time. In Generation II onward, they no longer carry whips.

They generally use strong and evolved Pokémon, have a diversified and balanced party, and their artificial intelligence is generally very good compared to other Trainer classes in their games. Like Gym Leaders, they often have healing items, and they also use type advantages to their advantage. They are usually seen during the mid to last part of the game in Victory Road, as they are presumably on their way to challenge the Elite Four. In the Battle Subway, some of them employ a set strategy revolving around the Ability Intimidate. In Generation VI's Battle Maison, they have unspecialized teams that may occasionally include Latias or Latios.

When paired together in Double Battles, they are called Cool Couples in Generation III, Double Teams in Generation IV, and Ace Duos in Generations VI and VII. In addition, a duo of a male Ace Trainer and a male Veteran is called Master & Apprentice.

In FireRed and LeafGreen, Cooltrainers use a team of five Pokémon, save for the ones in the Battle Tower and the Cool Couples.

In the games taking place in Sinnoh, Ace Trainers have two sets of sprites, with one set of Ace Trainers dressed warmly for the blizzards near Snowpoint City.

In Black, White, Black 2, and White 2, some will give out PP Ups when defeated.

In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, some Ace Trainers appear on top of Surfing Pokémon across Hoenn's water routes.

In Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Ace Trainers keep their Pokémon in Ultra Balls. In addition, certain Ace Trainers possess Z-Rings or Z-Power Rings.

In Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Ace Trainers will award five Ultra Balls along with prize money upon being defeated, except for Gym Trainers and Master Trainers.

Trainer list

292Shedinja.png The contents of this section have been suggested to be split into Ace Trainer (Trainer class)/Trainer list.
Please discuss it on the talk page for this section.

Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow

In these games a random number is generated every turn, and if it falls within a specific range a checklist is followed to determine whether the Trainer will perform a special action like switching or using an item. The AI check is meant to be performed 25% of the time for both Cooltrainer types. However, the Cooltrainer♀ AI code is bugged and fails to properly handle the random check, meaning that Cooltrainer♀s will always perform the relevant actions when their individual requirements are fulfilled. The Cooltrainer♂ code does not have this bug, and thus occurs at the proper rate.

Cooltrainer♂s have access to two X Attacks, which they will use 25% of the time. Cooltrainer♀s, on the other hand, are coded to check their Pokémon's current HP and perform one of two actions when it's under a certain threshold. If their current Pokémon is under 10% HP, they will use a Hyper Potion. If their Pokémon is not under 10% HP, but is under 20% HP, they will instead switch out to the next Pokémon in their party. Because of the aforementioned bug, Cooltrainer♀s will do this continuously so long as the HP condition remains true, which can lead to a Cooltrainer♀ switching two Pokémon for each other ad infinitum.[2]

Trivia

Lanturn using Earthquake in Pokémon Emerald
  • Despite appearing on top of a surfing sprite, some Ace Trainers on Hoenn's water routes battle without Pokémon that know Surf.
  • Some Cooltrainers/Ace Trainers own Pokémon with moves that couldn't be learned either in that generation at all or due to it being underleveled:
  • In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, there is a glitch with Ace Trainer Kate: if the player leaves the area after completing the Double Battle with Jenn and Irene, then comes back and talks to Kate from the side, she will speak to the player as if they had already battled. Then, if the player walks down towards her, she will start a battle while facing the wrong direction.
  • In Pokémon GO, an Ace Trainer refers to a Trainer who has engaged in at least 10 Trainer Battles against any of the team leaders.
    • Originally, the medal could be achieved by training in a friendly Gym by the same minimum amount, but the medal was decommissioned on June 19, 2017, with the update of the Gym system. It would not be used again until the introduction of Trainer Battles on December 13, 2018.
  • Ace Trainers in Alola-based Generation VII games were designed by TOKIYA.[3]
  • Ace Trainer Deanne in [Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl] has a Tropius in a Cherish Ball, as a reference to the first event pkemon distributed in a Cherish Ball.
