Trials on the Isle (Japanese: パシオの試練に挑戦！？ Take on Pasio's Trials!?) was a story event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pairs Selene & Rowlet and Elio & Popplio. It also marked the debut of Lana and Kiawe as NPCs.

This event featured the Full-Force Battle, where players were challenged to defeat a large group of strong opponents. Similar to the Legendary Arena, players could use multiple teams with a limited number of total sync pairs, with the opponents' health carrying over between rounds and with previously used pairs unable to be used again until the challenge is reset. Medals could be earned by completing specific missions.

In addition, players could earn a medal for completing all the story areas in the event.

First run

The event first ran from April 15 to May 2, 2021. The "Selene Spotlight Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Selene & Rowlet for the duration of the event, and the "Elio Spotlight Scout" gave an increased chance of recruiting Elio & Popplio starting on April 17, 2021, and lasting until the end of the event.

In this run, players could earn Travel Tokens from "Challenge Pasio's Trainers" single-player battles. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Daily Super Tough Battle!, which could only be challenged once per day. The player could use Travel Tokens to move to an adjacent space on the event map, collecting the item on that space. Reaching the checkpoint on a map would allow the player to unlock a new story area, if one was available, and advance to the next map. In addition, the maps would occasionally include a story sub-area that could be unlocked when the player moved to that space. Once all the story sub-areas had been unlocked, the player could find grand prizes on the map, which included Power-Up items, 5★ Scout Tickets, Support Move Candy Coins, Co-Op Sync Orbs, 3-Pack Ultra Drink Sets +, Skill Spheres, Skip Tickets, and Level-Up Manuals. Extra Travel Tokens were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.

The player could battle using Selene & Rowlet/Dartrix/Decidueye or Elio & Popplio/Brionne/Primarina to obtain +0.6× bonus Travel Tokens; Mallow & Tsareena to obtain +0.4× bonus Travel Tokens; and Hapu & Mudsdale, Nanu & Persian, Scottie/Bettie & Pikachu, or Scottie/Bettie & Torchic to obtain +0.2× bonus Travel Tokens.

Second run

The event reran from April 18 to May 2, 2022. The "Selene and Elio Spotlight Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Selene & Rowlet and Elio & Popplio for the duration of the event.

In this run, there was no event map; each story area was unlocked by completing the preceding battle, and the story sub-areas were unlocked by completing missions. Players could earn Event Vouchers V from battles that could be redeemed in the shop. Daily Super Tough Battle! was renamed to Daily Extreme Battle 1, but could still only be challenged once per day. Extra vouchers were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.

The player could battle using Selene & Rowlet/Dartrix/Decidueye or Elio & Popplio/Brionne/Primarina to obtain +0.6× bonus vouchers; Mallow & Tsareena to obtain +0.4× bonus vouchers; and Scottie/Bettie & Pikachu, Scottie/Bettie & Torchic, or any unlisted Alola sync pair to obtain +0.2× bonus vouchers.

Third run

The event reran again from May 16 to June 2, 2023. Like the second run, each story area was unlocked by completing the preceding battle, and the story sub-areas were unlocked by completing missions. Players could earn Event Vouchers M from battles that could be redeemed in the shop. Daily Extreme Battle 1 could still only be challenged once per day. Extra vouchers were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.

The player could battle using Selene & Rowlet/Dartrix/Decidueye or Elio & Popplio/Brionne/Primarina to obtain +0.6× bonus vouchers; Mallow & Tsareena to obtain +0.4× bonus vouchers; and Scottie/Bettie & Pikachu, Scottie/Bettie & Torchic, or any unlisted Alola sync pair to obtain +0.2× bonus vouchers.

Plot

Mallow introduces the player to her friends Lana, Kiawe, Elio, and Selene. She, Lana, and Kiawe are setting up trials on Pasio that are reminiscent of the trials they held for the island challenge back in Alola, and everyone thinks that the player would do really well in them. Mallow invites the player to try these "Pasio trials" with Elio and Selene.

The first trial is held by Lana, so the player, Elio, and Selene head to the beach. Lana tells the group that they have to fish up something big and defeat it, so they get to fishing. To their surprise, they fish up Marlon and two Swimmers. Lana chuckles and points out that she never said what they had to fish up was a Pokémon. The player, Elio, and Selene battle and defeat Marlon and the Swimmers, so Lana declares that they have cleared her trial and sends them off to the second trial.

The second trial is held by Kiawe at the volcano. He introduces himself again and explains his trial: there will be two dances, and the player, Elio, and Selene will have to spot the difference between them and answer a question. A Mismagius, Rapidash, and Machoke dance twice, with a Hiker appearing at the end of the second dance. Selene identifies the hiker as the difference, but then Blaine presents them with a quiz: who is the Gym Leader from Sinnoh who loves to dance? Selene and Elio are unsure, but the player answers Fantina. Kiawe congratulates the player for answering correctly, and then challenges the group to defeat his sync pairs: the Hiker, Fantina, and Blaine. The player, Selene, and Elio successfully defeat the three sync pairs, and Kiawe declares that they have completed his Pasio trial.

The third trial is held by Mallow in the forest. Elio guesses that they will be searching for ingredients in the forest, which Mallow confirms, but she says it will be more difficult than the trial they did on Akala Island. After collecting a bottle of Moomoo Milk from Whitney, rare Berries from Ramos, Packaged Curry from Gloria, and honey from a Beauty's Ribombee, Mallow whips up a Super Mallow Special using the ingredients. The aroma attracts the island kahunas Hapu, Nanu, and Olivia, whom the player, Elio, and Selene are able to defeat. Later, all the Trainers from Alola gather to celebrate Elio, Selene, and the player's achievement of clearing all three Pasio trials.

A series of vignettes follows Elio and Selene on adventures with various sync pairs around Pasio. The player shows Elio and Selene around some interesting spots on the beach; the player helps Elio catch a bunch of runaway Meowth that Nanu is raising; Sophocles and Selene inspect Pasio's electrical systems, and Sophocles starts peppering Volkner with questions about the modifications he made to them; May and Kris marvel at Selene's Rowlet's ability to rotate its neck 180 degrees; Elio and Selene take a while to respond to a bad pun Elesa makes; Selene, Winona, and Kahili go cloud gazing; Elio watches Mina and Burgh draw pictures of Plumeria and Guzma, and he reflects on how much they all have changed from their experiences in Alola and on Pasio; Selene and Barry argue over whether Crasher Wake or the Masked Royal would win in a fight; Selene helps Gloria and Siebold by taste testing the curry they are making; Elio and Selene suggest that Kahili should become Alola's Champion, but she and Professor Kukui think that the position is better left open for kids like them to claim.

Selene	Everyone was just saying that you'd do really well in the trials they're setting up on Pasio, <player>.
Mallow	Oh, you probably don't know what these trials are... They're part of a tradition in Alola called the island challenge! Basically, all children go through it and complete a bunch of trials! And we, the Trial Captains, are the ones who decide what kinds of trials they are!
Kiawe	I guess it's similar to gathering badges in other regions.
Lana	Yes. However, it's not just your skills in battle that get tested.
Mallow	It's gonna be a new, updated version of the trials we had on Akala Island. We're calling them the Pasio trials! <player>, wanna give it a try?

Nanu	Hmm... If you can't really tell the difference between their personalities, you might run into some issues raising them. Maybe I'll wait on handing one of them off to you for now.

Sophocles	I know you shouldn't do unapproved modifications, but some of them are really clever! Someone made a really cool system that diverts electricity. It's so cool, I almost want to try copying it myself!
Molayne	I wonder if we know the person who did that. I know! Why don't you have Volkner here help you out with those repairs?
Selene	Yeah! Volkner's good with gadgets, too!
Volkner	Well...to tell you the truth, I'm the one who made those modifications! It was just a small...tinkering with the circuits so I can charge up stuff wherever I go.
Sophocles	So you're talking about this thing?
Volkner	Yeah. If you get a Pokémon to use electricity on it, it'll adjust the wattage and you can use it to charge your devices!
Sophocles	What about this one?!
Volkner	Uh, yeah! That's—
Sophocles	Oh, wow! This is so cool! Um! If you have some time, could you teach me some stuff while we're repairing this together?

Kahili	Yes. I completed my training up in the mountains... so now I'm working on perfecting my form on flatter ground.

Selene	Whoa! This is amazing! The meat and the vegetables balance each other out so perfectly! And the sauce—the main flavor and life of the curry—matches well with the ingredients! And this fragrant smell! It just makes you crave more and more! This curry is AWESOME!

Selene	But if you don't mind me mentioning something about the flavor...it's a little spicy. If there were a little more sweetness, it would add depth to the taste!
Siebold	Sweetness?! That's it!
