Physiology
Stunfisk is a flat, fishlike Pokémon with a broad, mud-brown body. At the base of its yellow tail is a yellow marking shaped like an exclamation mark when seen from behind. These markings can generate electricity. It has small, horizontal, oval-shaped eyes, white with a tiny black pupil and no irises. Almost exactly between these two eyes lies the two thick gray lips that form its mouth. It has two small, flimsy fins at the sides of its body; each with two lobes. It has been seen to leap into the air and flap its fins as if they're wings to remain airborne.
Stunfisk is a fish-like creature with a broad, flattened, mud-brown body and a yellow tail that is constantly held above its face. At the base of its tail is a yellow marking shaped like an upside-down exclamation point. It has small, horizontal oval-shaped eyes, white with a tiny black pupil and no irises. Nearly exactly between these two eyes lies its mouth, which comprises of two thick gray lips. Finally, it has two small, flimsy fins at the sides of its body. These fins have two lobes.

Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
Stunfisk has electrical powers, zapping their prey. Their skin is very tough allowing it to takes hits, such as being trampled by sumo wrestlers, without being injured.

Behavior
Stunfisk buries itself in mud and sediment and waits for prey to pass by. Whenever unsuspecting prey touch its body, electricity is released and the prey is paralyzed.

Habitat
Stunfisk lives in mudflats and coastal areas, and thanks to the bacteria which lived alongside it, it developed the organs which it uses to generate electricity. Stunfisk's very tough skin keeps them unharmed if stepped on, even by sumo wrestlers. To exploit this, it buries itself in the mud of the seashore and waits for prey to pass by. Whenever unsuspecting prey touches a Stunfisk's body, it is zapped. Stunfisk smiles when electrocuting its foes for a reason that is still not yet known. If it cannot paralyze its foe, it contorts itself with unexpected speed and flops away.
It buries itself in mud at the seaside.

Cilan owns a Stunfisk that he caught in BW035.
Stunfisk has a regional form: Galarian Stunfisk.

Major appearances
Galarian Stunfisk is grayish-brown, with three green markings similar to footprints or leaves on its body. It cannot generate electricity, but the high iron content of the mud it lives in has strengthened its fins, which have been adapted into an apparatus akin to a bear trap. It leaves its red and white mouth, which looks similar to a Poké Ball, visible to lure in prey and then slams its fins shut on them so they cannot escape.

Minor appearances
Galarian Stunfisk is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Snap Trap. It is also the only known Pokémon that can have Mimicry as an Ability.

Origin
Origin
Stunfisk seems to be based on a flounder or dab (fish) combined with an electric ray. It may also be based on the stargazer, another fish that spends most of its time buried in the sea bottom and can make electric discharges when disturbed.
Stunfisk is based on a flounder, a type of flatfish, specifically the Pleuronectidae family, known as 鰈 (カレイ) karei in Japanese. It may also be based on the electric ray or stargazer (fish), which are fish that bury themselves in the sea bottom and can make electric discharges when disturbed. The yellow markings on its face bear a resemblance to an exclamation mark.

Galarian Stunfisk may be based on a trapping#Foothold traps. Its mouth resembles a Poké Ball, making it similar to the Voltorb and Foongus families. It also has footprints on its face which may help it camouflage.

Name origin
Name origin
Stunfisk is likely a combination of stun and fisk, the word for "fish" in most Northern European languages (from Old English fisk), or a combination of stun, fish, and disk, in reference to its flat shape. Maggyo name is likely a combination of マッド maddo, mud, and 魚 gyo, fish.

Stunfisk (Japanese: マッギョ Maggyo) is a dual-type Ground/Electric Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

In Galar, Stunfisk has a dual-type Ground/Steel regional form. Neither Unovan Stunfisk nor Galarian Stunfisk are known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Stunfisk is a flat, fishlike Pokémon with a broad, mud-brown body. At the base of its yellow tail is a yellow marking shaped like an exclamation mark when seen from behind. These markings can generate electricity. It has small, horizontal, oval-shaped eyes, white with a tiny black pupil and no irises. Almost exactly between these two eyes lies the two thick gray lips that form its mouth. It has two small, flimsy fins at the sides of its body; each with two lobes. It has been seen to leap into the air and flap its fins as if they're wings to remain airborne.

Forms

Galarian Stunfisk resembling a bear trap

Stunfisk has a regional form: Galarian Stunfisk.

Galarian Stunfisk is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Snap Trap. It is also the only known Pokémon that can have Mimicry as an Ability.

Trivia

  • Stunfisk shares its category with Spidops. They are both known as the Trap Pokémon.
  • Stunfisk is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 471.
  • Unovan Stunfisk was designed by Mana Ibe.[1] It was stated that its creation stemmed from a desire to make the flattest Pokémon ever.[2]
  • Stunfisk was originally designed as a blue dual-type Water/Electric Pokémon based on a goosefish. Its type was changed for balancing reasons, and its appearance ended up resembling a flounder.[2]
  • Due to its type, Stunfisk's Limber Ability is redundant from Generation VI onward unless its type changes, such as via Camouflage, Reflect Type, or Soak.
  • Galarian Stunfisk is the only Steel-type Pokémon with fins, and the only Steel-type in the Amorphous Egg Group.
  • Due to Mimicry, Galarian Stunfisk's Terrain Pulse will always receive STAB with any terrain on the field.
  • In Pokémon Sword and Shield, due to an oversight, Galarian Stunfisk is not considered a regional form.
    • As a consequence, in Pokémon Sword and Shield, if a male Unovan Stunfisk and a female Galarian Stunfisk both holding Everstones are bred, the offspring will be a Unovan Stunfisk—for other regional forms, if both parents are different regional forms of the same species and both hold Everstones, the offspring's form will match the mother's form.

Stunfisk is based on a flounder, a type of flatfish, specifically the righteye flounder family, known as 鰈 (カレイ) karei in Japanese.[2] It may also be based on the electric ray or stargazer, which are fish that bury themselves in the sea bottom and can make electric discharges when disturbed. The yellow markings on its face bear a resemblance to an exclamation mark.

Galarian Stunfisk may be based on a foothold trap. Its mouth resembles a Poké Ball, making it similar to the Voltorb and Foongus families. It also has footprints on its face which may help it camouflage.

Name origin

Stunfisk may be a combination of stun and either fisk (fish in many Germanic languages), or fish and disk (in reference to its flat shape).

Maggyo may be a combination of マッド maddo (mud) and 魚 gyo (fish). It may also refer to まぐろ maguro (tuna).
