An additional effect (Japanese: 追加効果 additional effect) is the in-battle secondary effect of a damaging move.
Additional effects include stat changes or status conditions with a chance of occurring. Some moves can also have more than one additional effect; Ice Fang is an example of this, with a 10% chance of freezing the target and an independent 10% chance of causing the target to flinch.
There are three Abilities which can modify the chance to cause an additional effect. Serene Grace doubles their chances of occurring when the user attacks (up to 100%), Sheer Force removes them from the user's moves but boosts their damage, and Shield Dust makes the Pokémon with that Ability immune to additional effects from moves that damage it. The rainbow created by Water Pledge when used in combination with Fire Pledge also doubles the chances of additional effects occurring (this effect does not stack with Serene Grace).
Moves that always lower the user's stat stages such as Overheat and Close Combat are not treated as moves with an additional effect. HP-draining, such as the effect of Giga Drain, is also not considered an additional effect. The item-removing effect of Knock Off, item-stealing effect of Thief and Covet, status condition-curing effect of Smelling Salts and Wake-Up Slap, barrier-removing effect of Brick Break and Psychic Fangs, and the type-changing effect of Burn Up are not considered additional effects.
Additional effects caused by using Fling while holding specific items are considered to be additional effects by Shield Dust but not by Sheer Force.
The Ability Stench and the held items Razor Fang and King's Rock grant additional effects to moves, though (in the case of the held items) they do not interact with Sheer Force.
