Peony (Japanese: ピオニー Peony) is a character in The Crown Tundra in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

In the games

Peony is the younger brother of Rose, though this is not often publicly mentioned. From childhood, he always felt pressured because he was constantly compared to Rose, who was described as being quite gifted, which caused Peony to become rebellious over time, becoming a delinquent who ran away from home. He eventually had his talents recognized and became a Gym Leader, specializing in Steel types. He was a powerful Trainer who posed a challenge to many, so much so that he even eventually became a Champion, though he left the Pokémon League shortly after Rose became the Chairman. He eventually found his way into exploring the Crown Tundra in hopes of learning more about the many Legendary Pokémon that inhabit it.

Peony has an odd relationship with his daughter Peonia. While he very much cares for her, he has an extremely boisterous personality and insists on taking her along in adventures, though as it currently stands, Peonia does not have interest in Peony's "adven-tours" and wishes to do things her own way. Peony even made a poster of himself in Peonia's travel planner, which she discarded quickly.

Peony appoints the player as the leader of his expedition team upon arriving in the Crown Tundra. Throughout the exploration, he serves as a mentor figure for the player, giving advice on where to search for certain Legendary Pokémon, and the player reports back to him after catching each Legendary Pokémon native to the region. After the player has completed all legendary quests, he tries to bring Peonia along on an "adven-tour", but then they both end up going to the Max Lair for Dynamax Adventures, where they discover that Ultra Beasts have inhabited the lair. He entrusts the player once more with finding Ultra Beasts. When the player captures legendary Pokémon from the Dynamax Adventures, they can show said Pokémon to Peony and he will make different comments on them. He can also be rematched daily here.

In the story The Sacred Bonds of Sovereign and Steed!, Peony is frequently possessed by Calyrex, who uses his body as a vessel to speak to the player.

Peony also makes appearances in the Galarian Star Tournament.

League Cards

This is the transcript of Peony's League Cards in Pokémon Sword and Shield

Normal League Card
"Peony is a former Steel-type Gym Leader. His powerful and dynamic battle style meant that anyone stuck on pitch maintenance had their work cut out for them. To this day, he is known as "Steel Peony" and has many fans, especially among men. This photo is actually a composite photo, made before Peony came to the Crown Tundra. It was originally a poster Peony stuck in the travel planner he made for his daughter, but she threw it away in short order. Peony liked the way it looked and decided to use it for his League Card."
Rare League Card
"Though this is seldom addressed publicly, Peony is, in fact, Rose's younger brother. Peony was compared to his brilliant older brother since he was born, causing him to gradually rebel and become a delinquent. He eventually ran away from home, only to eventually become a Gym Leader once his talent was recognized. He was even Champion once, but shortly afterward, Rose became League Chairman. This caused Peony to vanish entirely from the League. The Copperajah on Peony's team has been there since it was a Cufant. It was the first Pokémon Peony caught together with his brother."
