Rotom Pokédex
The Rotom Pokédex (Japanese: ロトム図鑑 Rotom illustrated encyclopedia), also known as the Rotom Dex, is an electronic device found in Alola and an enhanced version of the Pokédex. It appears in Pokémon Sun and Moon. This special Pokédex is said to be rare, even in the Alola region. While inside the Pokédex, Rotom can speak with the player. It is given to the player by Professor Kukui.
In addition to functioning as a regular Pokédex, the Rotom Pokédex also has other features for the player to use.
Functions
In Pokémon Sun and Moon, the Rotom Pokédex appears on the bottom screen, displaying a map of the area the player is current in. By tapping the screen, the player can access a variety of functions:
- When the player taps the center of the map, Rotom repeats its most recent suggestion on where to go next.
- When the player taps the map outside the center, the full map function opens, acting in a similar way to the Town Map in previous games.
- When the player taps the black bridge between Rotom's eyes, the Pokédex function opens.
- When the player taps either of Rotom's eyes or on the red part of its body, Rotom will shake and react in a variety of ways.
Pokédex
The Rotom Pokédex's main function is to work like other Pokédexes.
Map
The Rotom Pokédex has a map feature that allows players to see their current location, as well as view locations where a Pokémon lives. The Rotom Pokédex helps trainers navigate by picking up information from conversations they have and provides suggestions on where to go next.
Poké Finder
The Poké Finder (Japanese: ポケファインダー Poké Finder) function allows players to take pictures of Pokémon at certain spots. Pictures can then be evaluated. As the player gets higher evaluations and takes better pictures, more features, such as the ability to zoom, will become available.
The Poké Finder is activated by pressing R in certain spots. However if using the L=A option, the function is unusable until the button mode is set back to default.
QR Scanner
Using the QR Scanner (Japanese: QRスキャン QR Scan) feature, the Rotom Pokédex is able to scan QR codes. These QR codes allow the players to register a Pokémon in their Pokédex, allowing them to find that Pokémon's habitat. QR codes can be generated to share with other players, but normal QR codes can be used to generate random Pokémon, including those that do not appear in the Alola Pokédex.
Island Scan
Scanning QR codes gives the player points for Island Scan (Japanese: 島スキャン Island Scan) to search for a specific Pokémon not native to the Alola region. Most QR codes give 10 points, though some QR codes specifically for use with Sun and Moon will give 20 points, and Island Scan can be used when 100 points are accumulated. The scanned Pokémon varies by day of the week and the island the player is on when the Island Scan is performed. An Island Scan ends if the Pokémon is knocked out or not caught within a set amount of time.
Each of the Pokémon knows a specific one of its possible Egg Moves, unless it has no Egg Moves.

In the anime
Ash received the Rotom Pokédex from Professor Kukui in The Guardian's Challenge!. It was empty until SM003, where Kukui completed the Pokédex by having a Rotom enter the device, turning Rotom into the Rotom Pokédex Form (Japanese: ロトムポケデックスフォルム Rotom Pokédex Form). It has since registered Ash as its user and follows him around. Rotom claims to be a self-learning Pokédex (similar to an A.I.) and along with its ability to talk human language, it also updates itself whenever it finds something new about Pokémon. After finding a new Pokémon, it will display its info, and has a bad habit of getting up close and personal to the Pokémon in order to see if the information is true, only to annoy and get attacked by said Pokémon. It gets along with Ash and all his friends, but has shown an aversion to Sophocles whenever he attempts to "study" it.
After Rotom inhabited the Pokédex, it seems to have lost all combat functions, and is unable to use any move.

Trivia
- The Rotom Pokédex is the only Pokédex without the ability to view information about all known Pokémon in the series as of Generation VII, as it lacks information on the 500 Pokémon not in the Alola Pokédex and the ability to receive a National Dex upgrade whatsoever. While the Pokédexes in the Generation I and II games also lacked a National Pokédex function, all known Pokémon at the time were present within the Kanto and Johto regional Pokédexes respectively, and the Pokédex in Ruby and Sapphire although lacking a method of unlocking the National Dex at the time of their release, was able to do so later on via trading with FireRed or LeafGreen after the release of the latter pair of games.
- Ironically, Rotom itself does not appear in the Alola Pokédex, and cannot be obtained in the region without transferring from other games.
