Haunter (Japanese: ゴースト Ghost) is a dual-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Gastly starting at level 25 and evolves into Gengar when traded.

Biology
Haunter is a purple Pokémon with a gaseous body. It has a round head with a pair of disembodied hands. Each hand has three pointed fingers. Its head is flanked by three large, spiked protrusions on either side, and its eyes are large and triangular with small pupils. The gasses composing its head curve down to form several sharp teeth framing a pink mouth and a long tongue. Its body tapers into a jagged tail.

Haunter hides in very dark places, where it plots to take the life of the next living thing that comes near it. It then silently stalks its victim and licks it in order to steal its life force, killing it by inducing continuous shuddering. It has the ability to float through solid walls. Despite its predatory nature, it has been known to entertain and prank people in the anime, and even been shown to intense feel loyalty to a deceased Trainer. Haunter (Japanese: ゴースト Ghost) is a dual-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

In the manga
It evolves from Gastly starting at level 25 and evolves into Gengar when traded or when exposed to a Linking Cord.

In The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga
In The Electric Tale of Pikachu, Ash encounters a giant Haunter called the Black Fog, notorious for using its Dream Eater attack to kill people and Pokémon by stealing their souls. Sabrina has a vendetta against this Haunter, as her Pokémon were attacked and killed by it when she was eleven, but she falls victim as well in her attempt to protect a team of people trying to hunt it down. With the combined effort of Ash and the team of hunters, the Black Fog managed to be weakened enough for capture, only for it to promptly use Selfdestruct, killing itself right before Ash's Ultra Ball reaches it.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga
(Refer to Game data→Evolution data for more details.)
A boy that Blue met near the abandoned Power Plant had a Haunter in his team before it was stolen, with which he later fights Agatha's Gengar to free Blue from a coffin created by a Dream Eater attack. Agatha also had armies of Haunter that she used in her attack on Kanto.

Eusine was later seen with a Haunter in 14. It proved useful in knocking out the Masked Man's Gastly after the latter wounded Suicune with its Curse.
Biology
Haunter is a purple Pokémon with a gaseous body. It has a round head flanked by three large, spiked protrusions on either side. It has triangular eyes with small pupils and a mouth with a long, pink tongue. The gases composing its head curve into its mouth to form several pointed teeth. Disembodied hands with three clawed fingers each float in front of its body. Its body tapers into a jagged tail. Haunter's gaseous form makes it one of the lightest Pokémon in existence.

In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga
Haunter hides in very dark places, such as List of Pokémon by habitat, and is afraid of light. If a human or a Pokémon comes near Haunter, it will stalk the victim while floating and beckon it to come closer. Once approached it will then lick the victim with its gaseous tongue, inflicting convulsions in the victim that last until death. It can also float through walls. It has been shown in Pokémon the Series that it can control its hands from far away and can control any Pokémon that it touches with its hands. Haunter have also been depicted as being able to create illusions, pull out spirits from an individual’s body, and even remove its own eyes from its face. Despite its predatory nature, it is known to entertain and prank people, such as in the episode The Tower of Terror. Additionally, in A Shipful of Shivers, it is even shown to feel intense loyalty to a deceased Trainer. As mentioned in Sleep, Haunter is known to sleep while floating. A sleeping Haunter will steal the Death in the Pokémon world of anyone who comes near using its gaseous tongue.
Haunter debuted in Get Rid Of The Ghost Pokémon!! where it was under the ownership of Blue. It evolved into Gengar in the same part.

A Haunter appeared in Which One is the Real Clefairy!? where it was giving the citizens a tour around the area along with Red.
In Generation I, Night Shade was its signature move.

Giovanni was revealed to have a Haunter when it attempted to battle a Squirtle of his.
Evolution
Haunter evolves from Gastly and evolves into Gengar.

In the Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys manga
(For specifics on this Pokémon's Evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)
Black owns a Haunter which evolved from a Gastly.

Origin
Origin
Haunter is possibly based on the dila, a spirit that passes through walls then licks certain humans to death according to Filipino mythology. It also appears to be based on a generic sort of cartoonish ghost.
Haunter appears to be based on a ghost. It shares many similarities with the yōkai akashita, a creature with a wide mouth and a long tongue whose body is covered by dark clouds, making only its head and clawed hands visible.

While Haunter's long tongue is a recurring theme among many yōkai, its vampiric licking might have come from the Dila, a Philippine spirit that licked the life energy of sick people until they died, or from some variants of the akaname.

Some of Haunter's traits, such as its Poison type and extremely light weight, seem to be based on 浮遊霊, floating spirits said to be able to spread diseases.

Name origin
Name origin
Haunter is derived from haunt, as ghosts are known to do. It could also be a corruption of "hunter".
Haunter may be derived from haunt and the agent noun -er or possibly hunter.

Ghost is literally ghost.
Ghost is literally ghost.

Haunter (Japanese: ゴースト Ghost) is a dual-type Ghost/Poison Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves from Gastly starting at level 25 and evolves into Gengar when traded or when exposed to a Linking Cord.

(Refer to Game data→Evolution data for more details.)

Haunter hides in very dark places, such as caves, and is afraid of light. Haunter have also been depicted as being able to create illusions,[1] pull out spirits from an individual’s body,[2] and even remove its own eyes from its face[3]. Despite its predatory nature, it is known to entertain and prank people, such as in the episode The Tower of Terror. Additionally, in A Shipful of Shivers, it is even shown to feel intense loyalty to a deceased Trainer. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, Haunter is known to sleep while floating.[4] A sleeping Haunter will steal the life-force of anyone who comes near using its gaseous tongue.

In Generation I, Night Shade was its signature move.

Evolution

Haunter evolves from Gastly and evolves into Gengar.

Trivia

Design variations

Haunter's Generation I artworks, Generation I sprites (except Yellow), and Generation III sprites depict Haunter with three fingers and one thumb. However, in most of Haunter's depictions in other media, such as throughout Pokémon the Series (including the original series), it has always been depicted with two fingers and a thumb.

Origin

Haunter appears to be based on a ghost. It shares many similarities with the yōkai akaguchi, a creature with a wide mouth and a long tongue whose body is covered by dark clouds, making only its head and clawed hands visible.

While Haunter's long tongue is a recurring theme among many yōkai, its vampiric licking might have come from the Dila, a Philippine spirit that licked the life energy of sick people until they died, or from some variants of the akaname.

Some of Haunter's traits, such as its Poison type and extremely light weight, seem to be based on Fuyūrei, floating spirits said to be able to spread diseases.

Name origin

Haunter may be derived from haunt and the agentive suffix -er or possibly hunter.

Ghost is literally ghost.
