Lucas (Japanese: コウキ Kōki) is the male player character of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. His female counterpart is Dawn.
Appearance
In Diamond and Pearl, Lucas wears a white undershirt with a black vest over it, a red scarf, blue baggy jeans, with red and grey shoes. In Platinum, he now wears an outfit more suitable for the weather in the game, which is a dark red full-sleeved shirt with a dark blue and black jacket over it, a white scarf wrapped around his neck, denim black pants with dark gray and white running shoes, and a dark red hat with a white and black semi Poké Ball on the back.
In the games
Lucas lives in Twinleaf Town with his mother and dreams big, so he and his best friend (and soon-to-be rival) have high hopes of catching the Legendary Pokémon of their nearby lake. After meeting Professor Rowan and his assistant Dawn, they are attacked by wild Starly and, as a last resort, use the Pokémon in the briefcase the Professor has forgotten. After bringing the Pokémon back Lucas receives the Pokémon he used as well as a Pokédex and goes on to gather the eight Badges of Sinnoh, defeat Team Galactic and conquer the Pokémon League all before taking on the Battle Tower.
In Pokémon Platinum, Lucas and Barry instead go to visit Professor Rowan at his lab rather than go to the lake in search of a Pokémon of the same rarity as a red Gyarados. They receive their Pokémon on Route 201 when Professor Rowan realizes that they are so dedicated to Pokémon as to attempt to travel from Twinleaf Town to Sandgem Town through the tall grass without any Pokémon of their own.
He has to stop Team Galactic from trying to use either DialgaD or PalkiaP to destroy the entire universe in order to create a new one.
In Pokémon Platinum, Team Galactic attempts to use both Dialga and Palkia, but they are stopped by Giratina. Finally, Lucas has to go to the Distortion World and face Giratina, in order to stop both worlds from destroying each other.
If the player chooses Dawn, he will become Rowan's assistant for the game. Lucas lives in Sandgem Town with his little sister, grandfather, and father—who works as an assistant of Professor Rowan. He is already the Professor's assistant at the beginning of the game. He also demonstrates to the player how to capture Pokémon by capturing a wild Bidoof.
Years later, his exploits are referenced by Cynthia, who remembers a young Trainer who defeated her.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl
- "Professor, there's nothing out of the ordinary on the other side, either!"
- "Professor, you've been gone for four years now. How are you enjoying being back in Sinnoh?"
- "Sorry, folks."
- After battle with Wild Starly
- "Whew! You found the briefcase? The professor would've gone through the roof if he knew I forgot it here. Hunh? Whaaaat?! Did you guys... Did you use these Pokémon?! Oh man... How am I gonna explain this to the professor? ...This briefcase is the professor's, so I'll take it, OK?"
- Before going to Lake Valor (After earning the Mine Badge)
- "Hiya, <player>! How's Lake Valor? There's nothing wrong here. The lake is ordinary, as usual. There's no legendary Pokémon, either..."
- Before battle with Commander Mars (If talked to)
- "It's Team Galactic! They took the Pokémon of the lake..."
- After battle with Commander Mars (If talked to)
- "<player>, what's Team Galactic up to? They'd better not harm the Pokémon they took from the lakes..."
- "Uh... Yeah, of course! Professor, wait for me! You should visit us at our lab later, I think. We'll be seeing you!"
- "Hi! I've been waiting for you! Please, come with me. The prof's waiting to see you. See? This is our Pokémon Research Lab. We'll just go ahead and..."
- "What was that?! Your friend always seems to be in such a rush. Anyway... Let's go in."
- In Professor Rowan's lab
- "Boy, am I glad you're kind toward Pokémon. If you weren't, well... I don't even want to think about it."
- "I've got the same kind of Pokémon as you."
- "The professor asked me to help, so I'm going to go out and fill the Pokédex pages, too. That makes us comrades working toward the same goal. I'll teach you stuff later, OK?"
- Town tutorial
- ""Hey, <player>! I want to show you a few things. So, follow me! This building with the red roof is the Pokémon Center. You can get your Pokémon healed if it's been hurt in battle. You'll find a Pokémon Center in most towns. Over here, the building with the blue roof is the Poké Mart. It's a shop where you can buy and sell all sorts of items. <player>, since you're a rookie Trainer, you won’t be able to buy very much stuff. Don't worry about it, OK?"
- After town tutorial
- "Oh, yeah, right! <player>, you should let your family know you're helping Prof. Rowan put together his Pokédex. Sometimes, you have to go far away, so you should let someone know. Oh, but first, go heal up your Pokémon at the Poké Center. You'll be safe then. OK, be seeing you!"
- Post game
- "<player>! The professor told me the news! Congratulations, Champ!"
- If Dialga/Palkia was fainted
- "Hey, <player>! The prof told me something cool. He thinks Dialga/Palkia has reappeared at the Spear Pillar!"
- If Dialga/Palkia was caught
- "Hi, <player>! You know the elder of Celestic Town, right? She told me she wanted to show you something."
- When all Pokémon in Sinnoh Pokédex listing are seen
- "Hey, <player>! Let me take a look at your Pokédex. ... Awesome! You've seen every kind of Pokémon in Sinnoh! Have you shown this Pokédex to Prof. Rowan yet?"
- After receiving the National Pokédex
- "Hey, <player>, have you ever seen my kid sister?"
- After talking to Lucas’s sister
- "Hey, <player>, have you met Bebe? She lives out in Hearthome City. If you're a Trainer, you owe it to yourself to visit her."
- After talking to Bebe
- "Hey! <player>, you've got yourself a Poké Radar, too? Watch for tall grass to rustle wildly when you use that Poké Radar. That's a sign that rare Pokémon may be hiding there."
- After used the Poké Radar
- "Hi, <player>! How's your Poké Radar working out? When you use it, do you sometimes see more than one patch of tall grass rustling? The patch farther away gives you a better chance of seeing the same kind of Pokémon right in a row. I think that's how it goes."
- "Sometimes a patch of grass sparkles when a Poké Radar is used. They say a different-colored Pokémon is hiding there! I wonder if that's true?"
- "So, <player>. I'm also helping the professor out with the National Pokédex. Catching Pokémon can be really challenging, can't it? But I also have a ton of fun doing it!"
- After completing the National Pokédex
- "<player>! Wow! I don't know what to say! I mean, it's so awesome and all... Sincerely, congratulations for completing the National Pokédex!"
- If talked to on the Player’s birthday
- "Hey, <player>? Is it maybe your birthday today?"
- Yes: "I thought so! Congratulations, <player>! You know, I'm glad we're friends!"
- No: "Huh? It isn't? Now, what made me think it was your birthday? Freaky weird."
- If the player hasn't talked with Mom
- "<player>?! Did you tell your family that you're helping the professor? ...I bet you didn't, did you? I know that you're eager to see all kinds of Pokémon. But you shouldn't make your mom worry that you’ve upped and left."
- "Why don't you go tell your family that the professor asked for your help? You should do it right away."
- After talking with Mom
- "<player>, do you know how to catch a Pokémon? I'll demonstrate how to catch one, so just watch, OK?"
- Catching tutorial
- "All right! I got its HP down! Time to throw a Poké Ball!"
- After tutorial
- "And that's how it's done. Actually, I should have lowered the target's HP some more. Yup, the important thing is to lower the Pokémon's HP as much as possible. See, a healthy Pokémon isn't easy to catch. Oh yeah, they also get easier to catch if you make one of your Pokémon put them to sleep or such. Here, <player>, I'll give you five Poké Balls to get you started."
- First visit
- "Hey, <player>! How many Pokémon have you caught? Huh? I think you should catch some more. It might be more of a challenge raising a lot of Pokémon... But it’s worth it. The more Pokémon you have, the happier you’ll be./Whoa! You already have <#> Pokémon with you! In Jubilife City, there’s the Trainers' School. Check it out, <player>. Oh yeah, <rival> went to the Trainers' School earlier. OK, see you around! Work hard on your Pokédex!"
- Before battle with Team Galactic Grunts
- "<player>! Join me and battle these guys!"
- After battle
- "<player>, did you know about this? The professor studies about the evolution of Pokémon, too. According to his research, 90% of all Pokémon are somehow tied to evolution! I guess that means some Pokémon must undergo weird evolutions. So, <player>... Let's keep working on our Pokédex project for the prof!"
- "Hey, <player>! How's your Pokédex coming along? Me? I'm always doing great! ...I wish... But that's not important. Lately, I've been experimenting with a couple of neat tools. <player>, I'll share with you. Choose a hand!"
- Regardless of which hand is chosen
- "Oh yeah. You want the Vs. Seeker. Yup, <player>, you know what's important. Using that Vs. Seeker, you can find Trainers who want to battle with you again. <player>, what about a Pokétch? Do you have one? Yup, you do. You can have this too, then. You deserve it for all of your effort, <player>. The Dowsing Machine is... Just try touching it. It'll alert you if there is an unseeable item on the ground. It's especially handy for finding things in dark caves. OK, keep working on your Pokédex. Professor Rowan is counting on us!"
- Before earning the Cobble Badge
- "Hey! <player>, are you going to take on the Gym Leader? Wow, you just keep getting tougher and tougher. Me? Well, I took a look in the Game Corner and... I mean, yeah, of course I've been working on my Pokédex, but... Anyway, keep it up! I'll see you around!"
- After earning the Cobble Badge
- "Hey! <player>! Listen, I need your help... I dropped my Pokédex by accident, and Team Galactic found it. Now they won’t give it back. Please, I need you to help me. I'll be waiting in front of the warehouses. Please come!"
- In front of the Galactic Warehouse
- "Hey! <player>! Listen, I need your help... I dropped my Pokédex by accident, and Team Galactic found it. Now they won’t give it back. Please, I need you to help me. Will you team up with me to take them on?"
- Yes: "You and your Pokémon together with me and my Pokémon... Our dream team's not going to lose. Not with the way we work together! I'm not letting those criminals get away with this!"
- No: "I'll be waiting! Get ready and come quick!"
- After battle with Team Galactic Grunts
- "What's going on here? Why is Team Galactic out in the streets like they own the place? <Player>, thanks, honestly. If Professor Rowan ever hears that I lost my Pokédex... Oh, man, that's something I do not want to think about! So, <player>, what are your plans now? I'm going off to Pastoria City. The Great Marsh there has all kinds of Pokémon."
- Inside the Canalave Library
- "You bet, Professor! This will add to the Pokédex database and help advance your research."
- "Yes, sir!"
- Outside Canalave Library, after explosion in Lake Valor
- "Lake Valor... I wonder what happened?"
- If talked to
- "We're going to investigate Lake Verity before we join you. Don't try to be a hero if anything crazy happens."
- After beating Cyrus
- "<player>... I just ran into <rival>. He said that he believed in you, <player>. He said that you could get the job done. I think so too. You've got to help that Pokémon! It's suffering from being dragged out by Team Galactic!"
- "Since the last time, the professor did a lot of research... He became very worried about you, <player>, so he came out to a place as terrible as this... <player>, I'm glad to see you're safe. Let's leave this place already!"
- If talked to
- "...You know, that Pokémon was extraordinary, wasn't it? Was it really the Pokémon that created the Sinnoh region...?"
Pokémon Platinum
- "Professor Rowan! You left your briefcase behind at the lake. Is something wrong here?"
- "Wha...?! Those Pokémon are crucial. You're giving them away?"
- "Professor! Wait for me! Uh, sorry, folks."
- "Hi! I've been waiting for you! Please, come with me. The prof's waiting to see you. See? This is our Pokémon Research Lab. We'll just go ahead and..."

- In the Lab (after battling Giratina)
- "After you left, the professor did a lot of checking around. He got really worried about you, <player>. He got in touch with people he knows to rustle up help... You didn't need it, <player>. I'm glad to see you back safe, too."
- If talked to
- "So, I was thinking... Those Pokémon you met, <player>... Were they the ones said to be the creators of the Sinnoh region?"
- After entering the Hall of Fame
- "Hi, <player>! You know the elder of Celestic Town, right? She told me she had something to tell you."

- Poké Radar Tutorial
- "<Player>. Let me explain how the Poké Radar works. Let's give it a go. When you use the Poké Radar... There! Did you see the tall grass rustling? There's a Pokémon in that patch of tall grass. Go in there, and the Pokémon will come leaping out. Now, here's the strange part. If you see another patch of rustling grass far away, it means the same kind of Pokémon is hiding there. So, if your aim is to keep seeing the same kind of Pokémon, you should consider using Repels."
- "Hey, <player>! How many Pokémon have you caught? Huh? I think you should catch some more. It might be more of a challenge raising a lot of Pokémon... But it's worth it. The more Pokémon you have, the happier you'll be./Whoa! You already have <#> Pokémon with you! Hey, that's right! Don't you think it's better to know more about Pokémon? Sure it is! There's this great place for that. Come on! It's all right. Follow me. That guy... What's he doing? Uh, excuse..."
- "Huh? What? Are you kidding? I was just making small talk..."
- "...Working for the International Police sounds hard. <Player>, here we are. This is the Trainers' School. The name says it all! Your pal <rival> went in earlier. He might still be studying in there. OK, see you around!"

- "<Player>! Join me and battle these guys!"
- After battle
- "<Player>, did you know about this? The professor studies the evolution of Pokémon, too. According to his research, 90% of all Pokémon are somehow tied to evolution! Maybe that's the reason those goons tried to take the professor's research data. They're not allowed to do that!"

- No: "I’ll be waiting! Get ready and come quick!"

I have to have it for helping Prof. Rowan with his studies. So, <player>, what are your plans now? I think I’m off to the Pokémon Mansion on Route 212. They say they show off rare Pokémon to visitors."
- "Hey.. It's that weirdo from Jubilife."

- After buying Small Sofa
- "Is this sofa to your taste, <player>? I can't get comfortable sitting on something this expensive looking."
- Random quotes
- "<Player>, are you collecting furniture, too, now? Are you one of those people who can't stand to use Technical Machines? One of those types that end up with a TM collection out of hoarding?"
- "You could get a Villa as a gift? I did not know that. I wish someone'd give me a Villa. That way, I'd be able to assist the professor even more!"
- "The Battle Zone's intense and fun, huh? So many different kinds of Pokémon, and Trainers of every variety... I'd like to go to even more places."
- "Having this Villa must be convenient. It must be useful for checking up on the Pokémon in the Battle Zone."
- "You can find so many different kinds of Pokémon in the Battle Zone. Trainer, you don't mind if I rest for a bit, do you?"
