May (Japanese: ハルカ Haruka) is the female choice for the player character in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald and their Generation VI remakes, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. She also serves as the rival in the same games if the player chooses to play as her male counterpart, Brendan.
In the core series
As the protagonist
If May is selected as the player character, she starts her journey moving from her home in Johto to her new home in the town of Littleroot in Hoenn. After saving Professor Birch from a wild Pokémon, she is given one of the three starters of the Hoenn region. May develops a close bond with Brendan, and eventually Wally, who both act as her rivals. May goes on to gather the eight Badges of Hoenn, stop the plans of Team AquaSEAS/Team MagmaREOR and conquer the Pokémon League all before going off to face the Battle FrontierE/Battle MaisonORAS.
As a non-playable character
If May is not selected as the player, she is helping her dad finish the Hoenn Pokédex and becoming a Pokémon Professor. She is also the player's rival and friend. Along with Brendan (when playing as May), they are the only rivals unavailable for battle after entering the Hall of Fame. Additionally, they both are the only ones to not evolve their starter Pokémon into its final form, except for in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where their starters have been fully evolved by the battle that takes place after the credits.

Optional names
In the game, two of the optional names—one in Ruby and one in Sapphire—refer to "land" and "sea" respectively. In the English version, these are Terra and Marina; in the Japanese version, ムツミ Mutsumi and ナミ Nami (陸 mutsu means land and 波 nami means a wave of water). This is also the case in other languages. Unlike Brendan's name list, none of the three shared names correspond to this theme.
In Emerald, if the player leaves the name writing screen without any written name, or with a name composed entirely of empty spaces, Professor Birch says "So it's <optional name>?", suggesting one of the 20 available names. The player may answer "Yes" to accept the suggested name, or "No" to return to the name writing screen.

Pokémon Evolutions
May appeared in The Wish. She arrived at the Sky Pillar, where Zinnia led her to the top of the tower while reciting the lore of the Draconid people. At the summit, Zinnia summoned Rayquaza to save Hoenn from a giant meteorite, only to discover that Rayquaza had lost its ability to Mega Evolve. When May's Meteorite reacted to Rayquaza, she fed it to the Legendary Pokémon, restoring its ability to Mega Evolve. May then battled against Rayquaza and managed to catch it. Afterwards, Zinnia challenged May to a battle as her final duty as the Draconid Lorekeeper.

- Main article: Sapphire (Adventures)
May's counterpart in Pokémon Adventures is Sapphire, who, unlike her other counterparts, takes up Gym challenges and is an all-around tomboy thanks to a traumatic incident with Ruby where a Salamence attacked them when they were children. Trivia
- As the player character (along with Brendan), they are the only set of player characters that have both a mother and a father present in the games.
- May and Brendan are the only rivals who can't be fought in rematches after the player enters the Hall of Fame.
- Before Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, they were also the only rivals whose starter Pokémon does not reach its final form.
- Screenshots of Pokémon Emerald on the Japanese Nintendo website refer to May as "Emy" (Japanese: エミィ).[4]
- Pre-release media for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire referred to May as "Anna" (Japanese: アルファ Alpha).
- One of Pokémon Trainer's palette swaps in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a color scheme based on May's appearance in Pokémon Emerald.
- Similarly to Brendan, May's attire in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is mainly based on her appearance in Emerald, though some elements are also taken from her appearance in Ruby and Sapphire.
- While the second battle with May (or Brendan if she is the player character) is optional, the encounter leading up to it is not.
- Therefore, after receiving the Devon Goods before encountering May or Brendan in Rustboro City, if the player blacks out without ever visiting the Pokémon Center in Rustboro City (which causes the player character to rush to Petalburg City's Pokémon Center instead), the encounter and optional battle take place in Route 104 in front of Mr. Briney's house instead.
- May's teams in Emerald vary slightly from Brendan's teams:
- When battled in either Rustboro City or Route 104, May (if the player chose Torchic) uses a Torkoal, which is not used in future battles; Brendan uses a Slugma instead.
- When battled on Route 119, May (if the player chose Mudkip) uses a Lombre, which was not used in prior nor future battles; Brendan uses a Pelipper instead.
