(Japanese: コテツ Kotetsu) is a recurring character in the Pokémon anime who first appeared in Goodbye, Junior Cup - Hello Adventure! and a rival of Ash Ketchum.

History

Kotetsu first appeared as Ash, Iris, Cilan, and Dawn were leaving the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup. He had meant to compete, but arrived too late.

He later appeared as the group was seeing Dawn off. He announced he was going to take part in the Unova League, but he was missing his eighth Badge because he thought that only seven Badges were required to enter. He also mistakenly thought the League was going to be in Ecruteak City in Johto.

In the next episode, Kotetsu challenged Marlon to a Gym battle for a Wave Badge. He used his Ferrothorn and Samurott to battle Marlon's Jellicent and Mantine. Ultimately, Kotetsu and his Pokémon were able to come through with the win against Marlon and his Pokémon in order to get the last Badge necessary for Kotetsu to compete in the Unova League.

He reappeared in BW103. He had travelled to Higaki City to compete in the Higaki Conference and had set up his tent close to the hotel for the competitors, to make sure he wouldn't be too late to sign in. When Ash, his friends and Bianca, Stephan and Virgil walked past his tent and met up with him, he heard from the others he was almost too late to sign in. Ash hurried with him to the registration counter and was just in time. In the first round he battled with his Ferrothorn against Kenō and his Eelektross. The battle ended in BW104 and he won, allowing him to move on to the next round.

In the same episode it was revealed Kotetsu would face Bianca in the second round, in a two-on-two battle. Kotetsu started with his Samurott against Bianca's Escavalier. The Cavalry Pokémon was defeated rather quickly, after which Bianca sent out, much to everyone's shock, her Emboar. After withstanding super effective Aqua Jet and Hydro Cannon, however, Emboar used Attract on Samurott, causing it to become infatuated and soon defeated. Next Kotetsu chose to use Riolu, which Bianca thought to be very cute. Despite the notable size difference, Riolu was able to defeat the Mega Fire Pig Pokémon, causing Bianca to be eliminated from the Conference.

He is set to reappear in BW107 and BW108.

Character

Kotetsu is often forgetful at times where he would arrive at a certain location at a later time. In two instances, he wanted to compete in Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup but arrived during the end of the tournament and during the Higaki Conference. However, he managed to narrowly make it to the registration counter during the latter. Despite his forgetfulness, Kotetsu was shown to have good battling skills as shown with his battle with Marlon as he managed to defeat him and win the Wave Badge.

Pokémon

This listing is of Kotetsu's known Pokémon in the anime:

Riolu

Riolu was the first Pokémon Kotetsu was known to have and is usually seen outside its Poké Ball. Riolu is Kotetsu's main partner and is constantly shown to not take lightly to its Trainer's acts of forgetfulness.

In BW104, Riolu battled Bianca's Emboar and, despite the notable size difference, was able to stand out well, eventually defeating the Mega Fire Pig Pokémon with a Vacuum Wave. In BW106, Riolu defeated a Gigalith, which allowed Kotetsu to progress to the Top 8 of the Higaki Conference.

Riolu's known moves are Circle Throw, Force Palm, Copycat and Vacuum Wave.
Riolu has also used Flamethrower* via Copycat.

Ferrothorn
Debut The Road to Humilau
Voice actors
Japanese Kenta Miyake

Kotetsu used Ferrothorn in his Gym battle against Marlon and his Jellicent. Although it managed to defeat the Floating Pokémon, its Thunderbolt was disabled by Jellicent's Cursed Body, which allowed Marlon's Mantine to defeat it.

Ferrothorn's next appearance was in BW103 where it was used to battle Kenō's Eelektross during the first round of the Higaki Conference. It finally won in BW104, after firing a Pin Missile into Eelektross's mouth. In the next episode, Ferrothorn was seen defeating an Amoonguss and winning Kotetsu's third round battle.

Ferrothorn's known moves are Pin Missile, Thunderbolt and Metal Claw.

Samurott
Debut The Road to Humilau
Voice actors
Japanese Chiaki Takahashi

Kotetsu used Samurott in his Gym battle against Marlon's Mantine. During the battle Samurott was proven to be very fast underwater and powerful as she was able to dodge all of Mantine's moves and also used her seamitar to counter Mantine's Bullet Seed and defeat it using a powerful Razor Shell, winning her trainer the Wave Badge.

In BW104, Samurott battled Bianca's Escavalier and after a hard fought battle she defeated it. Then she battled Bianca's Emboar and despite the type advantage she was defeated after Emboar managed to successfully hit her with his Attract and finished her off with a powerful Hammer Arm.

Samurott's known moves are Hydro Cannon, Aqua Jet and Razor Shell.
