A Contest combination is a pairing of two moves out of a specific set that form a specially recognized combination when used one after another in Pokémon Contests, granting the user additional Appeal Points.

Several of these combinations were actually introduced in Generation II, before Contests existed in the games, as "combination attacks" that offered beneficial bonuses when used one after another in battle, such as Defense Curl being followed by Rollout.

Many of these moves can follow up one move to form a combination, as well as be followed up by another move to form a different combination. Stacking combinations, however, is not allowed; only one combination can occur at a time. If a move is used as a follow-up for one combination, it cannot act as the setup for another combination that same turn.

Many move combinations, particularly those in Generation VI, reflect combinations one might use in a battle to make certain moves more effective. For example, Toxic followed up by Hex form a combination since Toxic inflicts Bad Poison, while Hex inflicts double damage to any Pokémon with a major status condition.

Pokémon Contests

When any of the combinations below is used, the second move of that combination will receive double the base Appeal Points that it would have earned otherwise. Extra hearts from increased condition or position bonuses are not affected. If a Pokémon that has used the first move of a Contest combination is dazzled by another that uses Flash after it, the combination is cancelled.

Swift Psychic combination.png Swift-Psychic Espeon uses Swift and then uses Psychic on it, involving the Swift stars in a light blue aura and moving them so as to form several rings. Focus Ball.png Focus Ball Eevee launches a Shadow Ball and Munchlax uses Focus Punch on it. The Focus Punch energy fuses with the Shadow Ball and makes it stronger, faster and prettier. The combination was used by May during her battle against Harley in the Kanto Grand Festival in Thinning the Hoard!.
Dragon Razor Wind.png Dragon Razor Wind Absol launches a Razor Wind and Flygon uses DragonBreath on it, improving the attack's speed and power. The combination was used by Drew during his battle against May in the quarter-finals of the Kanto Grand Festival in Channeling the Battle Zone!.
Water and Fire Whirlwind.png Water and Fire Whirlwind Combusken uses Fire Spin and Squirtle uses Bubble. The two moves fuse and trap the opponent inside it. Blue sparks appear where the bubbles touch the Fire Spin. The combination is based upon Dome Ace Tucker's Fire and Water tactic. It was used by May during her battle against Drew in the Kanto Grand Festival in Channeling the Battle Zone! and again in A Full Course Tag Battle! with Dawn's Piplup replacing Squirtle.
Mud Bomb-Shock Wave combination.png Mud Bomb-Shock Wave Shellos fires a Mud Bomb into the air and Glameow uses Shock Wave on it, dotting up the attack. Shellos then uses Hidden Power on the balls of mud, destroying them to create a beautiful and flashy fireworks display. The combination was used by Zoey in A Stand-Up Sit-Down!.
Spinning Poison Sting.png Spinning Poison Sting Dustox uses Poison Sting towards the sky. When the stings begin to fall, Seviper hits them with Poison Tail, making them spin very fast while heading towards the opponent. It also adds power to them. The combination was used by Jessilina during her battle against Zoey in A Stand-Up Sit-Down!.

The result is a chandelier of ice that glows in a beautiful blue hue. Pachirisu can run inside the chandelier to hit the foes. AncientPower allows it to float while Hidden Power adds power to it. The combination was developed by Dawn in Teaching the Student Teacher! and used against Ursula in the Sinnoh Grand Festival in Opposites Interact!.

SkyAttack Peck Combination.png Rocket Formation Togekiss utilizes Sky Attack while having Piplup on her back using Peck. It results in a crimson aerial attack which resembles a rocket. Electrified Psycho Cut.png Electrified Psycho Cut Glameow puts its tail up and Gallade jumps into it. Glameow then uses Thunderbolt on Gallade, causing his blades to be charged with electricity. The blades start to glow yellow, and Gallade fires an electrified Psycho Cut at the opponent. The combination was used by Zoey during her battle against Dawn in the final of the Sinnoh Grand Festival in A Grand Fight for Winning!.
