Weather Ball (Japanese: ウェザーボール Weather Ball) is a damage-dealing Normal-type move introduced in Generation III. Prior to Generation IV, it was the signature move of Castform. It is TM46 in Generation VIII.

Effect

Weather Ball deals damage. When the weather is clear, Weather Ball is a Normal-type move. During any type of weather except strong winds, Weather Ball's power doubles to 100. (Type-based power boosts from weather apply as normal, in addition to Weather Ball's effect.)

Weather Ball's type changes depending on the weather at the time it is used.

Pokémon with Bulletproof are immune to Weather Ball, regardless of the weather.

Weather Ball can also be used as part of a Pokémon Contest combination, giving the user four extra appeal points if a weather summoning move was used in the prior turn. It is also part of a Contest Spectacular combination, giving the user three extra appeal points if a weather summoning move was used in the prior turn.

Generation III

Because damage category depends on the type of the move in Generation III, Weather Ball's category depends on its type.

In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, when used during a shadowy aura, Weather Ball's power doubles to 100, and the move becomes typeless; the move then is a physical move that deals regular damage against all Pokémon regardless of types, and the user will not receive STAB.

Generation IV

Weather Ball is affected by Normalize.

Generation V onwards

Weather Ball is unaffected by Normalize, Pixilate, Refrigerate, and Aerilate. However, it is affected by Ion Deluge (if the move would be Normal-type) and Electrify.

When used as a Z-Move with Normalium Z, Weather Ball will be turned into Breakneck Blitz, but then Breakneck Blitz will turn into the Z-Move of the type corresponding to the type Weather Ball would be in that weather. This does not occur if Weather Ball is turned into a Z-Move via another move like Sleep Talk. The same effect happens when Weather Ball is used as a Max Move, displaying as Max Strike but changing into the appropriate Max Move corresponding to the type Weather Ball would be in the current weather.

In Pokémon GO, Weather Ball is a Charged Attack that has been available since March 30, 2019. Unlike in the core series, Weather Ball's type is fixed and does not depend on the weather. The game's data instead stores its type variations as separate move entries.

Trivia

  • Despite Weather Ball becoming a Rock-type move in a sandstorm, Castform itself will not change form under these conditions.
  • Prior to Generation IV, Weather Ball was one of the only two moves (along with Hidden Power) which could be either physical or special, due to the damage category being determined by the type.
