Dream Eater (Japanese: ゆめくい Dream Eat) is a damage-dealing Psychic-type move introduced in Generation I. It was TM42 in Generations I and II. It lost its status in Generation III before regaining its status as a TM, albeit as TM85, from Generation IV to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as well as Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, it was TM59 instead.
Effect
Generation I to IV
Dream Eater only works if the target is asleep. Dream Eater inflicts damage, and up to 50% of the damage dealt to the target is restored to the user as HP. If this attack deals 1 HP of damage, 1 HP will be restored to the user.
If Dream Eater breaks a substitute, no HP will be restored to the user. If HP is restored to the user when its current HP is greater than its maximum HP, its current HP will be set equal to its maximum HP.
Dream Eater always does nothing if the target is not asleep and, except for Generation I core series games, if the target has a substitute.
If the user is holding a Big Root, the HP restored is increased by 30% (making the restored HP 65% of the damage dealt). Big Root does not increase the damage dealt.
Dream Eater can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 2 bonus appeal points if Calm Mind or Hypnosis was used in the previous turn.
Generation V
Dream Eater can now hit a substitute and will properly heal the user when damaging a substitute, even if it was broken. When used on a Pokémon with the Liquid Ooze Ability, the user will lose the amount of HP it would have gained instead.
Generation VI onwards
Dream Eater cannot be used if the user is under the effects of Heal Block.
Dream Eater can be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if a sleep-inducing status move (except Psycho Shift and Rest) was used in the prior turn.
Dream Eater affects targets with the Comatose Ability, which act as though they are asleep without the status condition.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, Dream Eater is a move with 20 base power, 100% accuracy, and 13 PP. The user attacks enemy in the front, and up to 50% of the damage dealt to the target is restored to the user as HP, including excess damage. The move will fail if the target is not affected by a sleep-related status condition. The move is affected by Muzzle status condition.
In Gates to Infinity, the user will heal based on how much HP the target lost, with excess damage not being accounted for. This is changed back to what it previously was in Super Mystery Dungeon.

Pokémon UNITE
In Pokémon UNITE, Dream Eater is Gengar's second move. It is obtained by evolving into Haunter at level 5 and upgrading Lick into it instead of Hex. The user shoots forward a mysterious orb, sleeping enemies when it hits. If used again when a nearby enemy is asleep, the user teleports behind them and attacks: dealing damage to the enemy, healing the user, and reducing the cooldown of Shadow Ball or Sludge Bomb. At level 11, its damage and healing is increased.
