False Swipe (Japanese: みねうち 峰打ち) is a damage-dealing Normal move introduced in Generation II.

It is:
* TM54 from Generation IV to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
* TM94 in Sword and Shield.
* TM057 in Generation IX.

Effect
Effect
False Swipe inflicts damage and if False Swipe deals more damage than the target's current HP, the target will always be left with 1 HP remaining. If the target has 1 HP remaining, False Swipe will hit and leave the target at 1 HP. This move is most often used to catch wild Pokémon.
False Swipe inflicts damage, but will leave the target with 1 HP if it would otherwise cause it to faint. If the target has 1 HP remaining, False Swipe will hit and leave the target at 1 HP.

False Swipe does not reduce its damage when hitting a substitute.

False Swipe can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 1 bonus appeal point if Swords Dance was used in the previous turn.

If used against a substitute, False Swipe is able to break it, and will not leave the decoy with 1 HP.
Generation VIII
Pokémon Legends: Arceus
False Swipe's PP was reduced to 30.

False Swipe deals damage. In the Rescue Team and Explorers series, False Swipe will leave the enemy with 1 HP. Despite being a damaging move that follows the normal damage calculation, it cannot be boosted with Ginseng in the Rescue Team series. This was fixed in the Explorers series.

In Gates to Infinity and Rescue Team DX, False Swipe can cause the enemy to faint, increasing the chance of that Pokémon joining the team if it does. False Swipe's effect is reverted to that of the previous games in Super Mystery Dungeon, as recruitment is not present in this entry.

Trivia
Trivia
*Due to the move's effect of always leaving the target with at least 1 HP, False Swipe is the only damaging move in the video games capable of doing zero damage on a successful strike (assuming no immunities). False Swipe can do zero damage on a target with exactly 1 HP left.
*False Swipe's Japanese name is a reference to katanas, which are designed to have a single cutting edge on one side, while the other side is mostly flat. Thus, striking the opponent with the flat side of the katana would not be fatal.
*Although Swablu can know False Swipe if hatched from the egg obtained in Box Ruby & Sapphire, it is incompatible with the TM introduced in Generation IV which teaches the same move.
*In Generation V, some notable Pokémon that were capable of learning False Swipe through breeding in previous generations, are now unable to do so. This is probably due to the fact that TMs in Generation V have unlimited uses. Despite this, those Pokémon are now capable of learning False Swipe via TM directly.
* False Swipe is infamously used to capture legendary pokémon, as it eventually leaves the opponent with 1 HP.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

Trivia

 • False Swipe's Japanese name is a reference to katanas, which are designed to have a single cutting edge on one side, while the other side is mostly flat. Thus, striking the opponent with the flat side of the katana would not be fatal.
